I put the Passat to 120 mph and wussed out for fear of the $1000 ticket

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 21 April 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

wait! make that 130mph

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 21 April 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i once went 160 km/h on the Hume Freeway

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 21 April 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

110. At which point I promptly stuck my hands out the sunroof and scared the hell out of my ex.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 21 April 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I was probably around 130 or so on some of my courier jobs back in the day. I'm nowhere near as willing to do a stunt like that now.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 21 April 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

85 k/hour (with mere gravity and pedal power). However whenever I get behind the wheel of a car I'm too scaredy-cat to go above 40.

hamish (hamish), Monday, 21 April 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

133mph I think? Quite unwillingly and inn a CRX of all things with my fucking insane friend who has never seemed to quite comprehend the fact that if you crash you, like, get hurt and stuff.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 21 April 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

105 m.p.h. in a 1986 Toyota Celica in Montana. No cops, but I started to get the feeling that astronauts must have when they say "We're breaking up."

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 April 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Gloucestershire to Exeter at pretty much 100mph all the way on the M5 (slower on the A roads!).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 21 April 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I was in a plane.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 21 April 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Quite unwillingly and inn a CRX "

near death experience in the passenger seat of a CRX is always unwilling!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 21 April 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

130kph in the country in my folx mobile. the triumph never got faster than 120kph.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 April 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

not i do not condone speeding.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 April 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

60 mph on a moped.
160 mph in a car.

It's a me Mario!, Monday, 21 April 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I got my mom's 1988 Toyota Corolla up to 100mph going up Chicago's Lake Shore Drive at 3am. Car rattling, got scared, slowed down

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 21 April 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I generally drive at 100mph on the motorway. I've been up to 120mph on the autobahn but the roadsurface wasn't terribly great and I didn't feel safe, especially with a hevay oven in the boot.

Ed (dali), Monday, 21 April 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

When I had to drive my brother's new car from Kentucky to Massachusetts, I did about 120 on a stretch of I-80 in rural Pennsylvania.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't go very fast, I guess I am a wuss, I've done 100 sometimes but I prefer to just laze along at 60 or 70 on motorways. The only time I speed is if I am very stressed and in a hurry, I guess that's the worst time to do it too.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

About 140 in an RX-7. I wasn't driving, though. A real shame.

ANGUS (kenan), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I thought this was going to be a sex thread.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(also, probably 110 mph in a car, same on a motorcycle which is a wee bit more exciting.)

teeny (teeny), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

300kph in a TGV

Ed (dali), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

However fast a commercial airliner goes.

Ed (dali), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

About 150mph in my friend's sister's huge V12 Mercedes. Smooth sailing.

oops (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Once in high school my friend Josh got his 1976 Buick Skylark up to 110 mph on a small country road whilst I was in the back seat; I was all like "DUDE CHILL THE FUCK OUT!!!!". The scariest moment of my entire life.

Pretty recently I was borrowing my mom's brand new Volkswagen Jetta, and was driving back to Lex from a class in Louisville at like 9:30 am, and looked down at the speedometer only to catch myself doing 120 mph. I was like WTF? cuz I usually drive a truck and feel like I'm going too fast at 70...those little cars though, they make fast seem like nothing.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, you should've been in that V12--couldn't feel the speed at all.

oops (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Barrus to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Quickly!

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ignoring Ed's commercial airliner point (about 400-500mph, I believe), about 125mph in a big old 2 litre Audi I once owned, on the M4 near Bristol. I normally keep under 90 on motorways, as my policeman cousin reckons that much more than that and odds are that you will lose your licence immediately if caught.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

When it comes to driving, I've done about 90mph on 95 South (and I probably would have tried going faster, but the traffic, already going 90, was heavy enough). What's really bizarre is when I feel like I'm just idling along, and then look at the speedometer to discover that I'm driving at 60 or 70 mph.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Soon after I bought my new Golf in '90, I was driving home on the parkway and thought let's see how fast I can go. Good idea, right? I got up to about 110, when suddenly I lost control of the car, and it spun completely around, a full 360 degrees, continuing on in a straight line back on track after the spin-out! I immediately swerved off to the side of the road and had a heart attack. One of the scariest moments of my life.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The only time I ever drove over 40mph I ended up in a ditch. Hence my lack of driver's licence. It's not one of my mad skillz.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom used to work at a court office where she processed speeding tickets, and one time she got one in by this guy who was riding one of those "Ninja" motorcycles and doing 191mph!) on the I-5. I have neither a driver's license nor a deathwish, but I've been in a car at 140mph.

Check out the site of the "Spririt of America" to learn more about what it's like driving the 800mph jet-car which holds the land speed record. Pretty amusing.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I went 120mph then into a powerslide round a roundabout with a car full of screaming people, me included. We all went quite pale.

Alex K (Alex K), Monday, 21 April 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a blowout doing close to 100mph on a French motorway once, in my non-stop run (except for a very, very rough ferry ride) from Angouleme to Leicester. Amazingly, I managed to 'steer', just about, to the shoulder.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 April 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck man, I had a similar thing happen about six months ago on the M4 back into London. Ragging at about 90mph the front passenger tyre blew on my Carlton just outside Reading. It was a busy Sunday afternoon and I was in the fast lane, watching bits of my car fly over the bonnet. I was like "well, I'm gonna die, I just got to make sure I don't take anyone else with me." Luckily there was no-one to my left and I was able to sverve across and just coast to stop on the hard shoulder.

The guy who came to tow me away told me I was lucky to be walking away. What had happened was the tyre was a fucking remould and the rubber had separated and caught in the bumper, ripping it right off, hence the bits of flying metal and plastic.

The best bit was that the same weekend I had just bought a new car and instead of being able to sell the Carlt, it was so knackered that it went straight to the scrapyard.

Alex K (Alex K), Monday, 21 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I borrowed my friend's Audi A3 to drive from Geneva to Venice and got up to 200 kmh (about 124 mph) in Northern Italy. Fastest on moped = 57 mph, fastest in car I've owned, 112 mph in my old Citroen AX GT.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

130 in my friend's new eclipse on the road out to Vegas... smooth sailing, but I didn;t do it for long.

(screaming from the passenger seat tends to maake one lose one's comcentration.)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Alex, they're terrifying. I had had a blowout once before, but I was doing like 30 on a country road. It was like someone had grabbed the wheel and ripped it to one side. Having experienced that, I was surprised that I could sort of control the fast one.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(concentration, too)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I can beat your car speeds, you dangerous speedfreaks.

Can we have a "how many g have you pulled" thread?

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

g-strings?

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I went up to 110mph early this morning on Interstate 5.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I think I saw you. What's your license plate number?

i'mnotacop (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

About 110 mph in Montana in a car just because I could, about 60 mph a few times on a bicycle.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 21 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

When I first got the Beetle it wasn't uncommon to see me barrelling down the 101 or the 5 out in California at around 110+. I think I topped it out around 130mph on the 101 one night, just to see where the 'rattle point' was for the car. I haven't found it yet, and to add to my stupidity I'll note that the 101 is not the straightest of highways the USA has to offer. Extra dumb is the story of how we shot down the 1/101 on the way to the 10 later that year and took those winding curves through the various tunnels in the sides of the mountain at really ridiculous speeds. It felt like a video game.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

about 130mph (210kmh) in a rented S-Class Mercedes on the Autobahn from Cologne to Frankfurt.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I drove 80 mph for about three minutes on the interstate in a mad attempt to cut down on driving time and arrive at a particular destination ASAP. When I finally arrived at said destination, I broke down and cried, and I was trembling for hours afterward.

I can never in good conscience go past 60 mph, not even on a highway, and not now, anyway. I was once able to go up to 70 mph, but now I doubt if I can even sustain that. I'm one of those types who's perfectly happy going 40 mph on a main thoroughfare, where I can actually see building details and breathe in and out normally.

Of course, usually when Mom's riding with me, she usually asks me to hurry things up a bit, so maybe I'm too much of a granny driver. Sad -- I'm more than a year away from turning 25 and you might as well stick a curly white wig on me. ;)

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

186mph. On a train.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhere in excess of 130 MPH going downhill in a Pontiac Sunbird. About 110 MPH on level ground (Oldsmobile Achieva - fucking piece of crap), but the road wasn't great so I slowed down after that. I can never go fast enough for my liking.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I drive very fast all the time - I've been over 95mph on country roads - and I've never been caught speeding, and never had any kind of accident in over 24 years.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a ticket for going 110 once. In a Ford Escort of all things.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Check out the site of the "Spririt of America" to learn more about what it's like driving the 800mph jet-car which holds the land speed record. Pretty amusing.

Sorry, old chap, but that's still a British-held record, isn't it? Thrust SSC and so forth.

As someone who hasn't driven since they passed their test, I can only claim to have nudged a blackout-inducing 59mph on the national speed limit A-road between Whitehaven and Workington once or twice. About 110mph in a BMW driven by an aggressive workmate on the M6. 180mph+ on the Eurostar. 600 'knots' or so on a Boeing 777.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Barrus to thread!

I'm not saying anything that might incriminate me.
