fox sunday lineup turning to crap

it was bad enough when 'malcolm in the middle' started up, blemishing the excellent lineup of futurama, king of the hill, and simpsons.

now they put on terrifically unfunny and conceptually very lame 'oliver beene' and 'the pitts'

very bad, no?

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"malcolm in the middle" is fantastic. its much better than the drab "king of the hill"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

KING OF THE HILL ROX U R ALL GAY

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Malcolm in the Middle turned to shit after the first season... I haven't seen those new shows but judging by the promos, I'd guess that they don't make it thru the entire season. For reals though.... can't they come up with something, er, good?

Oh well, I had to study last night anyway.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It was at its peak when it was King of the Hill, Simpsons, and X-files, back when all three were good.

Futurama came along just as Simpsons when to shit. X-files I completely lost track off. Malcom in the Middle is unwatchable, as is Oliver Been. King of the Hill hasn't really declined, its just that its been on for far too and repeats the same predictable plots. So they now have one good show, Futurama, which comes on maybe once a month.

Fox Sundays were the only time I made it a point to watch TV. No more.

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't even know Futurama was still on Fox anymore: lately I've been watching it on Cartoon Network every night.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Malcolm In The Middle is still funny.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

x-files and simpsons both went shit absolutely ages ago. i stopped watching the x-files a while back, i still watch the simpsons, even though it hasn't raised a smile in some time. "futurama" is very good, but not as good as peak-period simpsons. "malcolm in the middle" definitely makes me laugh aloud. always worth watching.

king of the hill is OK. it might make me smile every so often, but it's a bit too...sleepy, y'know. i like gags to come thick and fast.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I fucking miss Futurama (as they haven't been showing it lately...WTF!?!). At it's best, it's one of the funniest things evah. Very hard to imagine that Al Gore's daughter is one of the writers...BUT SHE IS!!!

I love King of the Hill too, it's insanely pointedly ridiculous very often, but it falls into that sit-com part-with-the-weepy-sentimental-piano-music-whilst-main-characters-learn-a-lesson shtick a great deal, which usually = at least 5 minutes of the show I'm not interested whatsoever.

The Simpsons...well, all I'm gonna say is "If I can tranq out just one freak on stilts, I know I've done my job." Even at it's supposed worst, it's funnier and more appealing than 9,999,999% of everything else on the idiot box. I swear I'm gonna end up drunk one night getting a tattoo of something Simpsonsian one of these days.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I love King of the Hill, but the ones I've seen lately concentrate too much on Hank and Bobby and even Luann, while missing the best character on the show - Peggy. Peggy cracks me up, something about her overwhelming selfconfidence is pure comedy gold. I can see how people might not like it, it's definately slower, more character-based, and not as "wacky" as the other Fox Sunday-night shows, but I think patience pays off in this case.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Even at it's supposed worst, it's funnier and more appealing than 9,999,999% of everything else on the idiot box

why is it everyone always says something like that about the Simpsons to justify it? there are lots of other TV shows that are funnier than the Simpsons lately - they include South Park, Futurama, King Of The Hill, a lot of the stuff on Adult Swim, Scrubs...

King Of The Hill is perpetually under-rated - i never make much effort to watch it but when i do i am always pleasantly surprised and laugh out loud a lot more naturally than if watching any new Simpsons. Futurama also very good but a few things about it bug me - too many references to 20th centuryness perhaps.

Malcolm In The Middle does seem to have lost it a bit - rather like the Simpsons they just seem to focus more and more on cynically exposing the character flaws and basing the humour around that.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's possible that Futurama was cancelled yo.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

AND WHERE THE FUCK IS ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE???

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i think king of the hill is pretty consistently brilliant. i think mike judge (and his writers), from beavis & butthead to KOTH, does an even better job at pointing fingers at and satirizing the godawfulness that is american culture even better than the simpsons does...

the simpsons has declined in the last few years, but every so often an episode will be absolutely great...like the one last season where homer started smoking pot

i didn't care for futurama intitally, but the last couple seasons have had a high level of yuk-density...some very good scripts lately

malcolm is pointless, overdone, unfunny, painful to watch
oliver beene-done-already is pointless, unfunny
the promos for the pitts claimed the series was created by simpsons writers...must have been the ones whose jokes never made it onto the final scripts

i've noticed the shows seem to rip off gag premises from each other...like KOTH and simpsons each did shows about rodeo clowns...the pitts did an episode about ventriloquists' dummies, which was territory already mined (in a much subtler and funnier way) by KOTH

i guess doing jokes about ventriloquists is the equivalent of what mime jokes were in the eighties

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

GABBO FABBO, KRUSTY RUSTY!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the link Sean! I hope we can stop this insanity and fight the power and get more Futurama, cuz GEEZ THIS UTTERLY REEKS OF NEUTRALITY.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i downloaded an episode of The Critic last night - this show deserves a re-run on Paramount big time

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Characters from Futurama who have yet to utter a non-hilarious word: Kip Branagan, Zoidberg, the Professor, and duh "bite-my-shiny-metal-ass" BENDER. I guess if they cancel this show now it'll stay like that FOREVAH.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

KOTH is far superior to the Simpsons for many reasons. Largely, because there's no real reason for it to be a cartoon, except that it better serves the characters. Nothing so fantastic ever happens that couldn't be achieved by a special effects budget the size of Joe Millionaire's grin.
But you can tell that Judge and his writers really really love the world they've created/mirror.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm obviously behind by several seasons for many reasons, but is Kip Branagan the bastard offspring of Zap and Kif? Cause that would be GREBT.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

AND WHERE THE FUCK IS ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE???

Yeah, ouch, I think that got canned. No fair. 'Twas solid, if a bit over-Fox-ified.

Malcolm in the Middle occasionally hits the mark, even though the three main boys are poor actors.

gazuga (gazuga), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know what it is?
FOX overdoes it with the special programming, the reality TV, so their sitcoms never get a chance to get a toehold, because they air so irregularly. So they don't get a chance to find an audience. Andy Richter's show was so great. But they even pre-empt Bernie Mac for American Idol all the time. And BM is awesome. (All BMs are awesome, except Brian Mulroney).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

fox in not caring about sitcoms anymore becuz that's not where their bread and butter is shockah

cross-post with horace shockah

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but sitcomes are long term b&b. I mean, nobody wants to see Joe Millionaire reruns, and there's no syndacation value at all for American Idol.
I guess it's awfully reflective of American capitalism at its current take-the-money-and-run nadir.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

D'oh! I meant Zap Branagan, but I've not had enuff COFFEE yet this morn. I think my still-in-theta-waves mind was forcing Zap-the-zany-one-&-Kiff-the-straight-"man" together into one funny entity.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but sitcomes are long term b&b.

Yes, but networks are not exactly known for planning ahead and thinking in the long term. They want programs that will win sweeps NOW and then worry about things the longevity and syndication possibilities later.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole, that's what I meant by:I guess it's awfully reflective of American capitalism at its current take-the-money-and-run nadir.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

best Kif line - "Pleeeeeease! I'm creating!" as Zap interrupts him styling an ape's hair into a style matching Leela's

Bernie Mac totally sucks ass btw, i say bring back the PJ's tho

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"I guess it's awfully reflective of American capitalism at its current take-the-money-and-run nadir."

(re fox's programming decisions), yes, excellent point.

"But you can tell that Judge and his writers really really love the world they've created/mirror."

yeah, they definitely have great affection for the small town texas world and its idiosycratic denizens...but it's also filled with brilliantly scathing indictments of american life...like in the one where hank's father was forced to work at the theme restaurant...or dale gribble's experience in a corporate america cubicle

it's amazing how they do the balancing act with hank...his character is totally uptight and reactionary, but he is the most (with the exception of bobby and khan jr., i guess) admirable character on the show. you can't help but have affection for him, and in spite of his political backwardness, he almost always seems to do the most admirable, virtuous thing...it's just cool how they've made him such a complex character; yeah, he doesn't encourage bobby in his interests and so forth, but his heart is always in the right place. and we know that his shortcomings as a dad result from his own twisted upbringing. at least there has been an improvement from one generation to the next.

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing I know about Oliver Beene is that David Cross does the narration. I can not wrap my head around this.

I see "Family Guy" hasn't been mentioned yet. Good.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

What, you think David Cross doesn't have bills to pay?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Well... erm... actually, yeah, he does. I don't want to go all "OMG EW HE SOLD OUT PS I AM DUMB" and instead will say that if his Oliver Beene turn is some sort of bad thing then it is easily cancelled out by the greatness that is Aqua Teen Hunger Force's "Dumber Dolls" episode.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

think about how many shitty shitty shows the alum of both Kids in the Hall and Mr. Show have been in. Almost negates their overall contributions to humanity?
Of course not. There's no reason to watch Just Shoot Me. No reason at all. Esp. not when you've got the Jesus Christ Superstar ep. of Mr. Show on DVD.

But you gotta take work where you can get it. I mean, how many of the writers (esp. the freelancers) have written for mags that they'd be embarrassed to be seen reading on the subway?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

futurama was good

Mike Hanle y (mike), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stand Malcolm in the Middle. It's so horrible and loud and vulgar. I sound like someone's grandmother, I know.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I realize I'm in the minority here, but I've never found Futurama funny either.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe if everyone realizes "The Simpsons" sucks now, we'll all wake up to see that we're supporting the most evil conservative bastard by watching it.

hstencil, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean Billionaire Tyrant, surely hstencil?

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Rupert Murdoch, yep.

hstencil, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never liked Malcolm in the Middle. I have this overwhelming urge to kick that kid.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

so I guess we're not gonna go see "Agent Cody Banks" then?

hstencil, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

No, even if it means the opportunity to laugh at the downward spiral of Angie Harmon's career.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It all started when she married Jason Seahorn, you know. And now she's pregnant. That means that he (or someone else!!) finished inside her. When they were having sex.

Goodnight.

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

goodnight indeed

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

And yet, she's so much better than Ms Rohm.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ms Rohm = a blonde plank of wood.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, don't be mean to wood!

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)
