What say you?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Who cares?

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops. Sorry to kill this, Alex. Just don't see how this case is any more "important" than any number of other sensational murders/kidnappings/etc. every year. Do people ever get tired of reading about this kinda stuff? I know I do.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I second hstencil. These things just get fucking boring after a while.

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

While I'm not gonna defend how the story has got so sensationalized, I will say that it's interesting that his family is swearing he's innocent even though he was picked up...

-on the way to Mexico
-having dyed his hair blonde
-with $10,000 cash
-with his brother's ID

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, just to play devil's advocate for the moment: We don't know for a fact that he was on his way to Mexico. Apparently, his parents live down there, right? So maybe he had a legitimate reason for being in Southern Cal. As for the hair-dying thing, if your face had been splashed all across the newsmedia for months as a possible killer, you'd probably think about changing your look too, wouldn't you? There are also possibly reasonable explanations for the cash and the ID. It's awfully convenient for the police that they always leak these sorts of "incriminating" details before the case goes to trial, isn't it?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This is one of those news cases that the ladies in my office talk about all the time regardless of its relative "unimportance" in the real world. So dud (I'm aware that this isn't a c/d thread).

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree that it's been over-sensationalized, but being that it's an inescapable story -- might as well address it, no? I'm not saying it should take on special precedence over the thousands of other workaday murders, but y'know....it's still a compelling story.

Notice how Scott's parents didn't even mention his affair in their tearful denouncement of the events?

He's going down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's inescapable, therefore we should talk about it more?

These kinds of crimes only get so much media attention because the victims/perpetrators are white.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, Stence, you've GOT to realize how insufferably pious that sounded....true or not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

He was going down from the moment he sold her car, less than two months after she had gone missing!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I'm sure it was to raise money to find the REAL KILLER.

Stencil-- Why don't you research some similiar cases involving people of color and we can discuss those too?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course it sounds pious, Alex! But hey, it is true.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a good article from the SF Chronicle about the disparity in media attention that some cases receive.

Excerpt:

The saga of Laci Peterson captivated America's attention. The 27-year-old Modesto mother-to-be was reported missing on Christmas Eve and became the subject of daily news reports capped by the arrest Friday of her husband, Scott Peterson.

But it is also the story of 24-year-old Evelyn Hernandez of San Francisco, who vanished last May 1 with her 5-year-old son, a week before she was to deliver a baby boy. Her torso was found in the bay three months later and identified, while her son remains missing. No arrests have been made.

Hernandez's case barely registered in the community and in Bay Area television news shows and newspapers, while the eyes of the nation seemed to be fixed on the search for Laci Peterson.

These kinds of crimes only get so much media attention because the victims/perpetrators are white.

And this one got so much this is the first I've heard about it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, the disappearance of Laci Peterson is perhaps THE crucial issue of our time! How can you be so uninformed!!!

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Lucky me!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course he did it. He's the husband. When married people are murdered (esp. women) 90% of the time it's the spouse.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's weird/gross that they found the remains of the unborn boy first and separate from laci, or whatever she is called. connor must have rotted out of her. we don't hear anything about it here in nz, so what i do read online quite fascinates me. i thought he was guilty from the start.

SURPRISE

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally fucking shocked. Esp. given the advance buzz. I guess people really really don't like Ben Affleck.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)
