how much are records worth?

Teh otehr day I got " Something New " by the Beatles for two dollars and the Goldmine price guide puts it at 100$. Also today I picked up a Gene Pitney album goldmine puts at 30$ , for twenty five cents. Should I feel proud, or is it merely fool's gold? Have you ever known anyone to pay this much for vinyl? ( Incidentally I also picked up "The Happy Moog" for 6 bucks! what a score!)

the trick is getting someone to pay $100 for it.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

plus, notice the grading standards of goldmine. it's pretty strict - a few scratches might cut the "price" by 50% or more

I actually misread this title as "how much are your records worth" and hoped to see people boasting about their collexions, ah well.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok then, is my mono pressing of John Coltrane's 'Ascension' worth anything?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

First or second edition? (i'm not too sure how to tell - theres probably different etchings on the run-in groove or you could just listen to the first bit to hear how soon the drums come in).

hamish (hamish), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I have lots of old jazz vinyls, which I "inherited" (=took them because no one else wanted them) from my father's dead cousin. Can you tell me, for example, if Sonny Rollins' "The Sound of Sonny" (from 1957, I think) is worth anything?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have any more specific details, Hamish? Not that I'm about to sell it, of course.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a lot of vinyl that's probably worth little, if anything, over the price I originally paid for it. I have, for example, David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars", in fair condition, which I paid $3 for. It's probably worth that much. I also have The Eagles' "The Long Run", that is in slightly better condition, which I paid $1 for and is probably worth $2.

On the other hand, I have stacks of Duran Duran vinyl that might very well be worth much more than what I got for it. I have the original UK release of Duran Duran's debut album, in near-mint condition, which I, the lucky ducky, paid just $2 for. I'm not sure how much *that* is worth (especially considering that it's a whole lot less thrilling a discovery in the UK than it is here in the US), but even if all the worth ends up being in some sort of emotional value, it will still be more than worth it.

My parents purchased many albums in their youth, many of which are still in our possession. Most of them are probably worth a lot. Does anyone know where I could perhaps look up the value of these recordings? I mean, is there an online database or a definitive book or something like that out there?

There are two different versions of Ascension, there should be a mark in the run-out groove. I don't think that either version should be worth more than $30, stone mint. Great record, no matter how much you pay for it.

I have many rare LPs, some of which are actually worth what I paid for 'em!

hstencil, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I paid US $15, and it's a sexy thing to have around anyway

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

those duran lp's will put yr kids thru college

ron (ron), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

d'ya think CDs will ever be worth anything?
I don't think they will be, cuz rekkids seem to be more physical artifacts in and of themselves, while CDs are merely data vessels.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Once a new popular music medium is out, will people keep their CD collections going? Aside from convenience, I doubt it

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Use Gemm to see what other people are selling them for.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

they're worth less than they were a year ago. proven by science (err, I mean eBay)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And here I was hoping my old Creation stuff would be worth something. :(

I think the only things I have that might be worth anything are my gold vinyl 12 inch of "Fools Gold" by the Stone Roses, and a white vinyl German pressing of "Perverted by Language" by the Fall. Oh, and Dinosaur Jrs first single but I spilt coke all over its sleeve so forget that one :-/

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

it sucks that everything i own that's worth any decent amount are the records they'll have to pry out of my cold dead fingers. oh well.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I often buy records thinking " I could sel this on Ebay" but then it seems like its better to just have it than have 10 bucks.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"d'ya think CDs will ever be worth anything?"

Some already are. Do an eBay search for Game Theory's _Lolita Nation_ or Dolly Mixture's _Demonstration Tapes_ - both go for $100 and up.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The strangest shit goes for tons of money on eBay. Billy Squier Tale of the Tape cd always in pretty high demand. Wall of Voodoo cd. The Buckley cds.

There's the Record Collector Price Guide which is rather expensive (about £25). A new edition of it has just come out. It's notoriously sketchy on non pop/rock. Certainly hopeless on most dance and hip hop/r&b etc. (ie most isn't listed). Into the bargain the prices quoted are top whack/unrealistic in some cases. Still a useful resource though.

A more sensible way of checking prices is to search by completed items in eBay's advanced search. Unfortunately it only goes back thirty days (I think) but it can be very helpful. That and just searching on google which will bring up a lot of dealer's lists. Oh and Gemm, as Ed said. I'd forgotten that one.

I saw a CD by C86 also-rans the Bodines go for 170 pounds the other day. i almost spat my coffee across the room.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems odd that cds would sell for a lot when they can be so easilty made into cd -r's, especially with a color copier to make nice cover and insert. I once saw a Mystic SIva record on ebay sell for $1000.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Saturday, 26 April 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
I found some old records in a box we were about to throwing away,
Like one is victor record

Floating Down the River on the Alabam
Heidelberg Quintette 17360-A
Regtime Regiment Band
Heidelberg Quintette 17360-B

it has a 75cent price on the center of it from the manuf.
has the original old brown paper sleeve with it with words on it
are these records worth any thing?I was going threw a box and found some 12" records
one is Tell Me, Sweet Rose {McKeon-Franzen}
Henry Burr

and about 20 other ones of these
are they worth anything or do you know were I could find out?

I got "The Great Lost Kinks Album" for free, and it goes on ebay for around $30. And I have some hardcore 7"s that i could sell in a pinch to scenesters for a total of a couple hundred bucks, probably.
