Students and cats: c/d?

Me and my roommate both love cats, so we've spoken about gettin one for ourselves. It's just that the situation is impossible: we're both university students, and our lifestyles aren't exactly regular enough to keep a pet. Currently, she's spending a lot of time at her new boyfriends flat, while me, I'm just a mobile person. Also, what would happen to the cat when we "divorce" (which is inevitable, I guess)? What if we both would want to keep it? So we haven't got a cat, but I'd still like to have one, dammit! Is there any possible scenario which could solve my problems?

Has anyone managed to combine student life with pets?

But you can't pet a fish.

I lived in dorms all through college, so I couldn't have my kitty with me. As soon as I graduated and moved into an apartment, I got a new kitten as a graduation present. How many more years do you have left? Do you live near your parents? Maybe they could house one for you that you could visit until graduation?

I've got a cat. It's really not that tough. Dry food and water and fresh litter for the occasions when I'll be gone all day.

Two cats aren't much harder to care for than one, if you're worried about having to cut the pussy in half when you divorce, Solomom-stylee.

I had a cat during the last couple years I was in college and it wasn't a big deal at all (and much needed for the years of angst, depression, and uncertainty that goes with college)
