Oddly enough, Andrew Sullivan said something about this that makes sense.

god i just want to beat him around the head and neck with my dick until he passes out or it breaks off

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know, I open up a few threads with new answers, then go to them. I read g--ff's comment there while sort of thinking it was the pictures of ILXors thread that I was on!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The BBC article quotes Gary Bauer saying Santorum's remarks jive with "mainstream America", w/no context??? Gary Bauer is a committed hard-right organizer on exactly these types of issues: abortion, "family values" etc etc. It's like writing "prominent Empire spokeman Rep. Vader suggested that the rebel alliance is 'not in step with galactic values'" and leaving it at that!

He reminds me of that amibiguously gay assistant on Veronica's Closet. You're all familiar with Veronica's Closet, of course. Anyway, this guy--

"Spotlight on sodomy"

Best headline ever.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 25 April 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hope this hurts Bush and the Republicans. So far, Bush is supporting Santorum.

I have to admit that I have doubts there is a constitutional "right to privacy," while nevertheless thinking this sort of law is outrageous in 21st century fucking America! From where I stand on the east coast of this country, current trends look pretty sad.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 25 April 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you should run for Senate against Santorum, Rocket Scientist!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we absolutely sure that picture isn't actually of someone from The Daily Show?

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

HONOR THE TEETH!

hstencil, Friday, 25 April 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, he looks like the old man from Poltergeist 2 there...

Sodomy laws

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 25 April 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I hated this fucker loooong before this new thing, which I'm surprised is getting so much hoopla. I thought there lots of openly anti-homosexual "acts" senators out there. A twerpy, kiss-ass embarassment to PA for ages.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, thinking about this stuff, and realizing how much has changed in the last hundred years, makes me feel more grateful to the various bohemian/hipster types (e.g., notably the beats, at least for starters) who have created an atmosphere more accepting of various sexual forms of the pursuit of happiness.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 25 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, Friday, 25 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second that (Rs's post, not that morans need to get a brain). It's impressive how much has changed in the last fifty years.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 25 April 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing that irritates about this controversy, tho, is that no one opposing Santorum brings up how utterly ridiculous his argument is when you bring consent, a major part of the law, into play. I mean, animals and children and whatnot ARE OBVIOUSLY not the same as consenting adults, and it's pretty depressing to me that (aside from the implicit homophobia) one of our country's LAWMAKERS doesn't seem to get that.

hstencil, Friday, 25 April 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess it's a lot more complicated than that. The change from a moral to a mental health model probably had a lot to do with it, at least as an initial step. (I'm reading the history of Pennsylvania's sodomy laws.)

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

meanwhile, bestiality is still legal in texas

H (Heruy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Daily Show makes the point that his initial statement merely equates same-sex sex with bestiality, incest, etc. If Santorum has no problem with homosexuals (as he later stated) the logical conclusion is that he also has no problem with incest and bestiality. "So what you're saying is that Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum wants people to fuck their own mothers?" "That's right, Jon."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps the worst thing about Senator Heinz's absence has been this idiot's rise. As I'm originally from Pittsburgh, I'm really ashamed that this man represents my home state and want to stress here that his comments are not at ALL indicative of how many urban/suburban Pennsylvanians feel regarding homosexuality.

The most egregious and foolish factor about his alleged comment was how it presumes that heterosexuals never have anal sex. What, pray tell, is a "homosexual act" in regards to sexual expression? Refrain from mentioning poppers or color-coordination, please.

I saw this guy on a school field trip with a bunch of people from my civics class, senior year, for this assembly q-and-a thing. We had a lot of fun watching him stammer and get stressed out when we asked him about the "immorality" of lower the drinking age to 18.

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in Philadelphia, PA, myself, which is partly why I am particularly interested in this.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is more responsible for continually voting in Sen Specter, btw, Philadelphians or us people from dah 'Burgh ?

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

remember that Pennsylvania as a state is pretty conservative and a lot of ppl see Pitssburgh and Philly as Sodom & Gomorrah (ok, maybe not quite that bad) but those cities are very different from the rest of the state

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

but the high population and high # of congressional seats - the "swing state" factor in itself - all is only due to the two cities. we don't really care about the people in da underpopulated boonies, as pittsburghians like to say. they're only good for things like grazing cows and producing chocolate (like the city of hershey! i took the factory tour once!)

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 1 May 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Pittsburgh is the boonies (but I do like the sound of a woman with a Pittsburgh accent).

(My sister lives in Lancaster County, and I would guess that she and her husband go along with most of what Santorum has to say.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 1 May 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Pittsburgh is the boonies

Since my brother and various cousins lived in various hoods of Philly for over a decade and I've visited there quite a bit in my childhood, I don't even pretend to refute this point of view when I am not around other dawgs from da 'Burgh.

But we got our own, self-created linguistic system with yinz and warshing machines and dahntahn and gum bands and the Stillers. We win.

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 1 May 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"in between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, lies Alabama" -- paraphrasing James Carville.

(there's a similar dynamic in New York -- between NYC and everywhere else -- but for some reason the distinction between big-city and rural Pennsylvania seems even more extreme than the New York equivalent.)

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 1 May 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

twelve years pass...
