Largely mediocre restaurants with one or two stand-out specialty dishes

One of the many pizza places nears me has fairly mediocre pizza. I have also tried their gyros, which were also so-so. But they have these pies that sit at the counter, one is vegetarian and one is chicken. They aren't listed on the main menu, as far as I know, but they are absolutely the thing to buy. They are mysteriously of much better quality than everything else I have tried there. The mushrooms they put on pizzas appear to have come out of a can, but the mushrooms in the pies seem fresh (though perhaps I can't tell, since they are so thoroughly mixed with the rest of the ingredients). I get the impression that they might be some sort of special family recipe that they make with extra care. I also wonder why I don't get botulism despite the fact that they do not appear to refrigerate these pies.

(Now you pat the bunny. . .) Has anyone else run into this sort of phenomenon?

Unless the restaurant is ethnic, there are usually only one or two entries I can order as a vegetarian. So the other day I was eatin' at Ruby Tuesday's and they don't have the garden veggie pasta any more! Argh! So I got the veggie burger. Easier to decide what to get for now on I guess.

There was this place in Cleveland where the food was terrible except for one item- the Polish Boy. A marvelous concoction of a deep fried polish sausage topped with coleslaw, hot sauce and french fries all served in the same bun. It was a mountainous sandwich fit for anyone who ever hated their colon.

The Stinking Rose is a stunt restaurant (aren't we cool - everything has garlic!) with mostly mediocre food. Garlic is their gimmick and every dish is full of it, but the garlic always seems added on as an afterthought with no thought into how to change the recipe around to accomodate the high garlic count and take advantage of it.

It's irritating becuase I love garlic a lot, but every meal I've had there is overpriced and well, rather boring. Except for the garlic chicken - something in the preparation of it makes it come out wonderfully juicy and tender. Best thing ever is to take the garlic bread and soak up some of the juices with it.

When I lived in Houston there was this frozen yogurt place in the mall down the street from the office. It was owned by a chinese family and at lunch they would serve up these homemade dumplings (veggie and pork), off the menu, huge, steaming hot and incredibly delicious.

I *dream* of those dumplings.

Houston is a great place for ethnic food, BTW. Whoda thunk it.

There's a Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago called Little Home Vietnam that makes mostly mediocre to bad Vietnamese food [amateurist knows this place too] - but the GRILLED BEEF SPRING ROLLS are to die for. Really, to die for. The transluscent fresh rice paper wrapped around yummy strips of grilled beef [they're red though, dont know how they get it that color] with peanuts, mint, carrots, cucumber, sprouts, and the yummiest spicy sauce ever.
