As in : "I'm surprised no one's mentioned [complete unknown] yet."

Possibly my favourite ILX statement. It's such vanity disguised as such wondering disingenuousness. I love it.

Give me some more examples of statements like this. Also, who are you surprised no one's mentioned yet?

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 25 April 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This statement is especially wonderful when it occurs about 3 posts into a thread.

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 25 April 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Or when ____ has already been mentioned twice, but the poster was too lazy to go back and read the thread from the beginning.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned me yet, since I just did this for the first time last night on the "Contemp. Amer. Novelists" thread. Surely I was this thread's inspiration?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised Pynchon hasn't got mentioned yet in this thread.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, I'm not sure Pynchon qualifies. Unless you have a radically different take on him than I do.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, jaymc, there are worse offenders. Recently the top soul/funk albums thread on ILM bugged me. People were using this phrase after only a handful of posts.
(cross post)

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I never could figure out why Joanie loved Chachi.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott Baio is sooooo overrated. U R ALL SO VERY VERY GAY

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I suppose if I had to choose between Chachi and Potsy and Ralph, I'd have chosen Chachi too.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I lie - I'd have chosen Pinky Tuscadero.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister's bf looks exactly like Scott B. IS scott Peruvian?

Sarah Mclusky (coco), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

U R ALL GAY, THE BIG RAGOO SAYS SO.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

kephm, Friday, 25 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I am completely unsurprised at how thoroughly unhumorous this thread turned out to be. I'm all for meta but whatever. Mention by dick bitches. I'm audi.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 25 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi, Millar's dick!!!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 25 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I've used this phrase a few times on here. I don't get the 'vanity' part - it's a more polite way of saying "You're mad not to have listed X really early in this thread".

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

but isn't that a polite way of saying "You're mad not to be as well informed and smart as I am" ?

rainy (rainy), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Instance #4893 of reading too much into an ILX post.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it necessarily is, Rainy - at least no more than half of my ILX posts, and I don't have that kind of thing in mind.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't actually think that about you Martin, it just seemed like Sam was putting forward a convincing case.

rainy (rainy), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so NOT surprised that no one has mentioned me yet.
I'm quite surprised that no one has mentioned Tankpuss or Chickenbear yet.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(I just wandered over to ILM and one of the revivals was a thread where one of the last of the previous batch was me saying almost exactly this thread's theme phrase! About the origins of rock & roll: I was genuinely surprised that no one had mentioned Wynonie Harris or Ike Turner, as they are often credited. I am pretty sure that would have simply been genuine surprise.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a lot of times the mention is simple surprise, not advocacy -- jaymc's mention of Chabon wasn't so much "obviously Chabon should be discussed," I thought, as "Chabon typically comes up in these discussions," since he wasn't sure himself yet what he thought of Chabon.

I just typed "Chabon" way too many times for it to mean anything. I've got Chabonic. I have Chabonized myself. (I'm leaving out the obvious suffix for Chabon.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You have a Chaboner?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz Alsaud yet. He's the world's seventh richest man, you know.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

You have a Chaboner?

Bingo.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool, thought so. I wish you'd mentioned it, I feel greedy

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"You have a Chaboner" could only be followed by "bingo"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

BINGO.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

To the best of my knowledge, no one’s mentioned Christopher Millardyet. But I can’t say I’m surprised.

Rex (Rex), Saturday, 26 April 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)
