i think i will be stopping off for a day in one of these 2 places (or possibly el paso). which is better, and why?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 25 April 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Albuquerque has the Albuqueque Isotopes, the minor league baseball team.

Nuff said.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 April 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in Tucson, so I'm partial to that place. I'd say there's enough stuff to keep you busy for at least one day. Downtown Tucson is pretty run-down but has some pretty evocative places, like the Hotel Congress, where John Dillinger's gang was arrested in 1934. (You can even get a "Dillinger's Hideout" steak in the hotel restaurant) I saw Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney there last year.

Plus don't you remember all the trouble Bugs Bunny always got into when he forgot to take that left turn at Albuquerque?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 25 April 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Hee, I forgot about that ..

I liked Albuquerque when I was there, but it was a) only for a day and a half or so, and b) in the middle of a very hot July, so I saw little. I have friends who lived in Tucson who really liked it (is Tucson the dry part of AZ or the humid part?). So pretty much, I think you'd have fun whichever one you chose.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 April 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

There's really nothing remarkable about Albuquerque at all. Just the name. It's a depressing shithole.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 April 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But the climate was so nice! (Granted, I was coming in from Kansas City, during the floods and 100-degree temps of 1993)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 April 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sandia Peak Tramway was pretty cool.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 April 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i like tucson. the bits that i saw were quiet, pretty, family-oriented. but i've only been in the winter months, it might be unbearable in summer. it's great how, in december, you can drive into the mountains and everything turns from parched desert to winter wonderland.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've already told you how much I like Tucson, Gareth. Stop for a meal in Alb. though, their Mexican food is on average better.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, I would just leave out El Paso entirely.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'd say if you going to be staying strictl w/in city limits, go to Tucson. It's slightly prettier, safer, and has better food (Albqr. does have better Mexican, but Tucson is famous for its Southwestern style) If time permits, take the drive up Mount Lemmon (Catalina Parkway I believe). It's really cool. You start in the desert w/tons of saguaro cacti, and work up climate zones until you're in an alpine setting w/huge pine trees--you can see Mexico from there. The drive is supposed to be similar to driving from the southern US to Canada but it only takes about an hour ea. way. (shit, you're gonna only be on trains, right? Oh well, I'd stick w/Tucson anyway)

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Also in Tucson: The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

See the jaguarundi!

The javelina!

the gila monster!
http://www.desertmuseum.org/images/nhsd_suspectu.gif

I also remember seeing bighorn sheep, tarantulas, lizards and skinks, bobcats, and a nice collection of rocks & minerals.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it's too bad you couldn't forgo Albuquerque and stop in Santa Fe instead, but hey the train goes where the train goes...

I stopped in Albuquerque briefly and, while the folks there were all very nice and cool, I kinda have to agree with JBR...

Never been to Tucson nor Phoenix so I can't say... my only AZ experience has been all the touristy pretty stuff around I-40 or north.. like the Navajo reservations, Flagstaff, Painted Desert, Grand Canyon, and the Meteor Crater..

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in Tucson in February -- I loved it. Party at Hotel Congress -- one of the great rock/dance clubs I've ever been to.

And, if you get to leave the city, go to the BIOSPHERE! (About 40 minute drive north). I saw no Pauly Shore around, but it's damn cool anyway. And yes, I think Pauly Shore is hilarious.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the Sonoran Desert Museum is very cool--it's not really a museum.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I know bugger all about either, but certainly 'Albakoykee' sounds great coming from a Brooklyn bunny. What more do you need?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I need said Brooklyn bunny

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Alberquerque - My best friend from high school lives there and my mom left early this morning on a flight there for her work (some psych conference I suppose).

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 25 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Tucson by far! And totally agree about Club Congress - one of the best shows I've seen was the Dirty Three/Calexico show there a couple years back.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(Buttch, you know I was just referring to Bugs Bunny, right?)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah sure, bugs bunny. Yeah, I knew that.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's only for a day, and if you don't have access to a car (someone said you'll be riding the train?), you might as well flip a coin. Neither has much to offer unless you have friends or family there. Both states are really best experienced by getting out in the scenery.

chester (synkro), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
sadly i didnt go to either. i was reminded of this yeaterday when stevem said that because we are exposed to america so much we dont have the difficulty in pronounciation of us places that americans and australians sometimes have here. he then went on to ruin his argument by pronouncing tucson as tucks-on

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 27 July 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i am right and they are wrong

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 July 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Albuquerque's better, gareth. At least I thought so. Even though the folks at Solar Culture were nice (and made a good vegan meal for us), the show was lackluster, the climate was ridiculously hot, and in general Arizona seems a dud. New Mexico just seems a lot cooler to me (and I like the scenery there better).

hstencil, Monday, 28 July 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Tucson because of the Morrissey "My Love Life" video when he drives his boys in a convertible past various tiki hotels and sundry Americana.

tucsonites -- would you recommend moving there? i've been, liked it lots, and am keeping it in mind as somewhere i might like to move. craigslist showed some hella cheap apartments. how easy is it to get a job?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

tucson -- there's lots of cool shops. if you want to record shop, check out PDQ records!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

it's fairly easy to get a job here i think, though i'm probably not the best person to ask as i haven't yet progressed past "low-paying part-time" college student territory. there are downsides to living here - the nightlife is a little slow, especially if you're used to NYC - but for the most part it's a lovely place to live.

it's kinda surreal to see people talking about tucson on ilx!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

lack of nightlife doesn't bother me. i'm used to making my own (even in a hoppin' burg such as this).

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

I miss tucson, and the way people are there. I think the desert changes you.

Would you learn how to drive, jody?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

i'd have to.

Oh wait, there's a whole thread comparing Tucson and Albuquerque. How convenient!

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

i still say tucson. tucson's better than santa fe too, although that part of the southwest is prettier.

vacation to outer darkness (Abbott), Friday, 5 February 2010 05:40 (fifteen years ago)

because we are exposed to america so much we dont have the difficulty in pronounciation of us places that americans and australians sometimes have here. he then went on to ruin his argument by pronouncing tucson as tucks-on

I made it well into adulthood before realising Tucson is not pronounced Tucksen and then like 3 days later happened to hear the "Jojo was a loner from Tucson Arizona" bit of "Get Back" (song all Britishers are also exposed to since childhood) and was amazed that this little nugget of pronunciation had passed me by so many times

that is all I know about Tucson but from this thread it sounds pretty cool so I hope you find it a good place to live

abbott -- me, still. i'd be happy to show you around when you get here. tucson summers are kind of scary but if you time your move right you'll get here just in time for monsoon season!

pretty sure every letter i've ever gotten from someone who wasn't from here was addressed to "tuscon."

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, J.D., that'd be great! I've never been to the town (or the state) before so it'd be way nice to have someone who knows what's up to show me the ropes. Any particular parts of town or realty companies to avoid? My husband & I are going to go to U of A for grad school.

I've lived in southern New Mexico for three years, at abt the same latitude as Tucson...looking at the wikipedia entry for Tucson, the summers look pretty similar, tho it looks like the winters are warmer there, which is a bonus (my town is abt 1,100 ft higher in elevation). So if it starts hitting 110+º F, I'm accustomed to it.

I spelled it Tuscon until a few weeks ago. *_*

vacation to outer darkness (Abbott), Saturday, 6 February 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

I'm way stoked to move to an actual city btw! This tiny town has been cramping my style.

four months pass...

The Viceroy & I (and a very very kind pal who offered to chauffeur our carless selves) were in Tucson the past couple of days. It seems like a totally groovy city. We found ourselves a nice place to rent where the landlords are totally pro-dog. I liked it a lot, and fwiw it is about the same level of hot as Cruces is.

I am drinking a Nimbus pale ale right now. Not bad at all.

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:53 (thirteen years ago)

  • hang out on 4th Ave for an afternoon
  • go to Biosphere 2 (which tbh is one of the coolest things I've ever done)
  • marvel at how fucking crystal-clear the air is and how you can see huge huge mountains a million miles away like a fucking photograph
  • also marvel at how Tucson is this weirdly huge sprawling grid with half-mile city blocks and everything is tan and grey with palm trees (I mean it's kind of like LA but w/ less flourish and maybe in sepia tone)
  • rent a really obscure hard-to-find film from Casa Video and peep the free popcorn (watch out it's salty)
  • get prickly pear iced tea from that one place

the mandy moorhols (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:54 (thirteen years ago)

Geez is someone going to ask what to do in Rigby, Idaho?
Downtown Tucs is all ripped up right now and so is 4th street.
Just drive west on 22nd or Broadway forever and look at saguaros. Go to Tucson Tamale Company! Sweat a lot! Eat some paletas!
Kingfish should check out the weird, dead "downtown" "mall" in Cruces. Go to Coas Books. It's a used bookstore. They call it "the Powell's of the Southwest." As a Portlander, this will make you laugh when you see it. It is great for musty weirdness. Check out Mesilla, eat at El Patio. Eat some green chile for the love of Christ!

Aceveda (admrl), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)

I hit the Mesilla Kitchen today, and made it to Coas with 15 minutes til close. Theyre not so much a Powells as much of a HalfPrice or a McKays. Plenty of board games on sale, too.

I am going to AZ next month. I hope to go to Tuscon and meet an Abbott while I'm there!

The Equalizer Busy Equalizing (Crabbits), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 03:49 (thirteen years ago)

i recommend:

-- go to frank's/francisco's -- decent diner/breakfast fare by day, absolutely stupendous mexican food after 5.
-- agree with the aforementioned bars but i'd recommend checking out the shelter (wonderfully kitschy '60s decorations, including neon pictures of JFK and RFK) and plush (comfortable seating, interior oddly reminiscent of a really big car, nice place to chill and hipster-watch).
-- when you're on fourth i recommend stopping by revolutionary grounds, which is just what it sounds like: a communist-themed coffee shop!

Here now.

Any good thrift stores?

Aceveda (admrl), Saturday, 1 September 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

Any good thrift stores?

There's a good one at the south end of 4th Ave. near the train overpass. It gets picked over quite a bit, but I've always found things there.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 1 September 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

Elvis probably talking about the Goodwill on 4th, there are a bunch of little vintagey shops nearby too

Another little cluster I like is Savers on Oracle/Fort Lowell, Casa De Los Ninos on Prince/Mountain, and Value Village on Stone/S of Glenn. All kind of close to each other. Value Village I have good luck w/records and household goods though the clothes are terrible. I got a Le Creuset pot there for $7! NB I find Savers a little spendy these days but it's still fun to go.

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

Once again though both 4th and Congress are totally tore up so you kind of have to circle around nearishby to park, and then walk, and hope you don't need to cross the street very often.

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

The St Vincents at 18th & 6th is really great too, and near the 4th st Goodwill. That's a more fun part of town to hang out in too.

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

Savers on E. Broadway was a pretty good one as I recall too.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:36 (thirteen years ago)

I got like 85% of my work clothes at that Savers. ANd most of my wacky vintage phones.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/539004_10150947590691428_1705357206_n.jpg

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

There are a bunch of little thrift shops on E Broadway and Speedway that are absolutely lame though. Like there's a little stretch where every other store is a thrift store and they all suck.
There is a good one at 22nd and Pantano (22nd Street Thrift Store) though it is way the fuck out there. like I never make it out there except the couple times of year I need to sate a craving for Popeyes chicken (at 22nd and Kolb).

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

Savers on Oracle

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

I like it a lot here. The mountains and palm trees are kind of what I'm used to but I love all the puffy cacti. We went to the Loft theatre last night which was really cool and Hotel Congress is great. What exactly is going on w/ all this construction?

Trying to decide if we want to make time for Saguaros and the Desert Museum or if we should save them for next time-we're only here briefly but like it enough that we're thinking about coming back for Thanksgiving.

Aceveda (admrl), Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

Desert Museum is worth checking out, you won't regret it! Weather is cooler than usual this weekend, you may as well take advantage of it.
The construction is for building a light rail.

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

What did you see at the Loft?

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

I want to go to both of these places ASAP. I love the southwest. I'd move to NM in a heart beat if I could actually find a job there. AZ is great too.

Aceveda (admrl), Sunday, 2 September 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

Savers on Oracle

such a great name. Looking fwd to being able to tell ppl "I went to a Saver's in Tucson once."

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:38 (thirteen years ago)

you're probably gone by now, and i dont know if you'd come accross many cameras/fabrics, but that little stretch of South Park Ave with all the importer/folk ark/antique stores is really a great way to spend an hour or two.
