Soccer Opera?!

I just found out that this guy I think is real hot starred in something that was referred to as "the soccer opera", which is apparently meant to be taken literally. I would like everyone here to theorize on what this could possibly involve, and also if this means I should really not pursue this avenue of crush, because obviously it involves a moron.

Hey if they can do a musical about Chess...

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

A soccer game balancing choreography and improvisation, built around a central concept (said concept not integral in definition of "soccer opera" any more than "pinball" is integral to "rock opera"). Art as game, game as art. Inspired by preface to Run Lola Run (except that no one involved ever refers to it by its English title, if at all).

Lots of running around bouncing balls off one's head and breaking into soliloquy, with world music in the background.

There was a play about Gary Lineker wasn't there?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'An Evening With Gary Lineker' I think, by Arthur Smith. It was okay. I would run a long way to avoid anything that could reasonably be called a 'soccer opera'. And I am old, unfit and asthmatic.

But everyone does need to see Shaolin Soccer immediately.

"Oh Zidane, oh Zidane, oh Zidane, Zidane Desailly..."

TS: Soccer opera vs. Jerry Springer opera.

I have a Zidane jersey, I should be in the opera.

I hope they sing that New Order song, actually.

i think it would be a fucking shame if the story of gazza isn't involved in this. he's worth of shakespeare, that lad.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Soccer + opera = HEAVEN

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 25 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Wolstenholme's classic words would sound grebt if delivered in operatic form.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Prague opera has commissioned an opera about the Czechs' 1998 Olympic hockey victory which is supposed to premiere next April--awesome.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Futebol-Arte

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

But maybe he's in Turandot, as over here at least, Nessun Dorma is inextricably linked to football, rather than being in an opera. So maybe he's not the moron, but the persion telling you was a moron who couldn't remember what the opera was.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 27 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

persion = person obv. I type too much about pensions at work and make these kind of typos all the time.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 27 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This could be The Beautiful Game, by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Ben Elton. It is meant to be rubbish.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 27 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw soccer theatre (plenty of shakespeare references) when i went to toronto. it centred around the world cup. not quite the same thing but...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 27 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't the Fall do some soccer ballet thing? "I am Kurious Oranj" was something like that, wasn't it?

Or did I just make that up?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 28 April 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

they wrote that song 'the chisellers' which is about halifax town i think. 'albert camus whats the score' is a great play about football and philosophy.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 28 April 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Could be something by noted QPR fan Michael Nyman, AET or the Final score perhaps?
