Girls' Hair-Dos / Don'ts: S & D

Beehives have GOT to go. My English teacher in 10th grade was obsessed with T.S. Eliot & death. We took a field trip to a GRAVEYARD (which I think I skipped because I played hooky). Plus, beehives make me think of spinsters.

I'm partial to longish hair, & medium length bobs. Bangs are bangs. Braiding doesn't float my boat, personally, but change is good. Split ends, though - the really obvious ones - are anathema. Bad juju.

And why do elderly women tease their hair to the heights of St. Peter and FROST? Still wondering about that one.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spiral perms are the tool of the devil. I still have nightmares about them.

Also, the Princess Diana haircut, with the shortish hair and feathered sides. My mom cut my hair like this when I was a kid, and I had no choice in the matter. But why do I still occaisonally see this haircut in 2001?

Anyone with any kind of scrunchie in their hair in public should be hauled to the barber and forced to have their head shaved.

The "Rachel" haircut.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate really "done" hair. Everything should be messy and shaggy.

Ally, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Destroy: SHORT HAIR ON GURLS! SHORT HAIR ON GURLS! SHORT HAIR ON GURLS!

NoNoNoNoNo. Do you see? It. Is. Wrong.

Search: Long, striaght hair. Always. Forever.

NOT the FUCKING 'Pixie' cut.

For FUCKS SAKE.

DavidM, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Short hair on girls can be and often is incredibly hot-looking. DavidM, expand your range. :-) Besides which, now that I've had long hair all this time, I understand how fucking frustrating it can be to deal with, so short hairstyles make perfect sense!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, women with short hair can be ultrasexyhot. See, um, what's her name, the short dark-haired one on "VIP". Or the fact that David Hasselhof's original "Baywatch" love interest was much more attractive when she had shorter hair (note that when she did grow her hair out, the scriptwriters decided to kill her character).

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Short hair on gurls is the best. Mmmmmmmm...

DG, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Short hair on girls cuz then they look like boys. Long hair on boys cuz then they look like girls. Do you SEE?

Bod has very short hair, DG. And wears a dress.

mark s, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Man, what's your problem? I think it is YOU who's after a bit of Bod, but you can't accept it, so you're projecting your desire on to others etc etc. Stop it, or I'll tell the board about your Ann Widdecombe fantasies.

DG, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've always wanted to do my hair some crazy colour like hot pink or blue. But now that I'm a corporate trainer, I have this pesky professional image thing to think about. Perhaps I could become disgruntled...

Kim, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, short hair roolz!

tarden, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know. I like short hair on girls and long hair on boys. Actually, I like exactly the same shoulder length sort of shaggy look on both.

UTTER DUD: long, perfectly straight, perfectly lank 70s style hair which is so en vogue in suburban London. Has become the new Essex Gel style.

CLASSIC: two symetrical bunches. Especially when combined with bangs.

Over the years, after every hair error imaginable (mohawk? Check! skinhead? check! pink hair? check!) I have come to the conclusion that hair that is natural is hair that is the best. Anything which has to be backcombed or straightened or moussed or gelled or hairsprayed into place is just WRONG. Especially if it involves wax.

I am not, however, talking about colour. If god had not intended us to dye our hair, she would have invented Miss Clairol, Ferria or Manic Panic. So there.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nobody's mentioned curls. I quite like curls.

Dyed hair? If it's a colour hair could actually be, sure. I know that's a Dad Opinion but tough.

Short hair yes. Long hair yes. Bangs yes. Bunches and scrunches no. Bobs yes to Louise Brooks, no to ubiquitous late-90s Van Outen wannabes.

Were the late 90s the blandest time for mainstream fashion ever, incidentally? People too busy laughing at other decades perceived mistakes to bother looking interesting?

80s Madonna hair look YES.

Tom, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ugh. Curls. Natural, tight, ringlet type curls are good (not spiral perms, which are the most evil invention ever to curse follicles) but what I hate is my boring, blah, humidity waves type curls. It's not straight, it's not curly, it just looks like a pre-raphaelite birdsnest. I envy people with perfectly naturally straight hair, they're the only ones who can really pull of fringes and bowl cuts (which are, of course, gods own hairstyle) off with aplomb.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Generally:

Long lank straight hair only good if you're very pretty. Otherwise, rubbish.

Clips and pigtails, if not overdone, or combined with irritating indie-girl tweeness - classic.
Rachel's bob in latest Friends series - classic
Farrah Fawcett wings - still classic, even if it is so 1999
Curls - almost always dud, but see below
Rita Heyworth / Claudia Cardinale luxuriant long, wavy, beautifully conditioned wavy hair - the most classic of classics.

Nick, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have long hair and the annoying thing is on windy days when I am wearing lip gloss and my hair blows into my lip gloss and gets stuck then frees itself and draws lip gloss lines all over my cheeks. Grrrr.

Emma, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma, when my hair was long, it did the same thing. Plus it'd streak my glasses! I used to wear super super thick lipgloss, doing some sort of 70s revival thing, and it was disgusting to have to wipe my glasses all day.

Incidentally, grossest thing EVER: my boyfriend of the time once walked up to me, wiped off some lipgloss with his finger, straight off my lips, and ATE IT. WTF?!?!?!?!

Getting back to hair, my hair is that wavy long crap that gets frizzed out in humidity but just lies there if you don't go through ten tons of products. So I chopped it off, it's around midneck now, very layered up and can do both the Farrah/Josie-and-the-Pussycats thing or the Rachel-bob or the Meg-Ryan-thing and it's even long enough tthat I can pull it up, which I've been taking to lately. It's the most versatile hairstyle I've ever had.

Which still doesn't stop me from wishing I had my superhuge, layered, down to mid-back Shania Twain do back.

Ally, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ewww, lipgloss is gross, it serves you right for wearing such a creation of Satan. I can't stand having anything on my lips, I invariably even manage to rub off chapstick in a matter of minutes.

"I don't care about the state of my hair, I get something out of nothing that just wasn't there..." or words to that effect by the Jesus and Mary Chain. Who clearly never spent an ounce of effort on their hair, oh no.

masonic boom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Date the hair of your dreams.

Look Joe, blue writing! I'm not telling you how.

PS - specify gender if unisex mullet.

I think people can do whatever with their hair and feel comfortable enough with it. It's horrible that people have to worry so much about what other people think. I think that older people tease their hair to great heights because they don't have a lot of hair left, and with what they do have, and the low opportunities to do somethin with it- this is one of the common ones. It's been going on for so long that it's just natural for the older folks to participate in the "tease". I was just wonderin...what do guys like most about blonds?? Long or short hair??? I've got long blond hair, and i dunno if i should cut it off or streak it- i want to do somethin new with it for back 2 school..but I don't think I'm brave enough to chop it all of..maybe just a trim or layer it but..help! What do you ppl think???

missy, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like short hair because I find it works better for framing the face of the person.

DG, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

missy, do you want to want us to tell you what we like or not?

Nick, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think you should shave it, like Justin Timberlake.

I'm trying to grow my hair back long. Luckily my hair grows like growing is going out of style, so I've already got shoulder length hair when I just cut it a little more than a month ago.

Ally, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess you could say I have the best of both worlds, as I don't dye my hair. My hair is very dark with platinum throught ( or silver) I can live with it :) I had a haircut last winter as a B-Day gift. I guess they left a whole inch length. :( It's almost back to shoulder length now T.G. I had a home perm and it's was & ware.:)

You guys all suck. You're way too opinionated! I know, I know, you guys don't like certain things, but you need to be more open minded! Those gals who've got their hair super short (like i will as of tomorrow) all like it that way! Well, theoretically. Sure, sure, people have hair that's "soooo 1999" and "soooo out of fashion", but what is fashion? Fashion, my friends, is a way that the media controls you. I bet you think "oh no, I'm not controlled by the media", but really, you are. On some little level, you are. Especially with all your "classic" comments - really! You are all so stereo-typical. Oh, I've also got blue hair, soon to be light purple, so you people ragging on "funny"-colored hair should really try to be a LITTLE less offensive. I do have preferences on hair, but I think everyone looks good with what they like best. I know many, MANY guys with long hair, but I also happen to know JUST as many who have shorter hair, and I think they all look great because they all like it. So you people who are "stating your opinions", you're not JUST doing that, you're also bringing people down.

TirifikTeelT0ast, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, this is a very serious issue you tards. Get with.

Flibbertygibbet, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tirifik, you should only wear your hair in a particular way because you enjoy it. You should not wear a hairstyle out of hostility.

You are being very defensive, even offensive, about your right to have super short, blue or purple hair. Why is this? It is certainly not in response to our opinions - because most of us have stated that we really like short hair on girls and that we have, at one stage or another, dyed our hair various colours.

Don't wear a hairstyle to hurt or embarrass your friends and family - I assume it is they at whom your anger is really directed. If you are making your hair-style decisions for the right reasons then you have no need to feel offended or brought down by other peoples opinions.

toraneko, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh, 15 year old poster alert ;) I'LL DYE MY HAIR BLUE COS I'M SO ALTERNATIVE, "fuck you, i won't tidy up my bedroom", as i believe the RATM song goes...

ANYWAY, far more importantly, WHAT ARE BANGS???? i've never really understood, are they like a fringe?

carsmilesteve, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Bangs' is American for fringe, I'm pretty sure, but it's always troubled me because surely a fringe is a singular thing. But them gringos, they just plain odd anyways.

Mark Morris, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Una has long straight hair, it's shiny and fantastic. trust me you have to see it. sigh. No seriously though I'm not too into short hair in general. Nothing is worse than visibly greasy hair though, fuckin disgusting.

Ronan, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blue hair sucks, that's so 1999.

Ally, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but they wouldnt let her do it 1999, she was only 13 back then. now she does whatever the fuck she wants.

Ronan, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the bob is a classic. i've been bobbin' for like 4 years now and have no desire to have a different do.

di, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi? I'm not fifteen. You guys all assume. Making you're little hypocritical assumptions... I'd like to see some of your hair and see if it's all what you guys don't like. I happen to be fourteen, and I am very proud of the fact that I have blue hair and people like you criticize it, it makes me feel good. I like knowing there are people out there who hate me because they don't know me except for the fact that I have blue hair.

TirifikTeelT0ast, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is it really blue or is it blue-black?

di, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bobs, dyed black. There is no better hairstyle. Although clipped short is also a big winner.

Long hair = dud. Sorry, but I find long hair on girls quite unattractive. The longer it is, the creepier it gets.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It happens to be electric blue.

TirifikTeelT0ast, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, you don't like long hair on girls, what about guys?

TirifikTeelT0ast, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Long hair on guys I can take or leave.

But once genetics kicks in (i.e. baldness), go short immediately.

personally, I go wild for girls with short dyed hair and glasses (especially if the hair is red or blue....mmmm....). but that's not to say I'm against girls with long hair. if the person is really cool it shouldn't matter how she does her hair.

veronica, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beehives and big hair are here to stay you square. Bobs and bangs are always good. Is anyone else looking forward to their blue rinse? White/silver wings for the men?

ducklingmonster, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Personally i adore medium length or short hair on girls, and long hair on guys :)

Curls are great, as long as they arent reminiscent of the 80's poofy "do"

and speaking of which, i best be off to the hairdressers :)

im getting a layered shoulder length fringed do with chunky red foils :)

I am 15 and I am a female and I think short hair on femails looks really good ... long hair on guys look really good as well ... im into the blonde myself ... but hey ... anyways ... i think the short hair really shows off a persons face ... if you have long thick hair ... sometimes you can hide part of your face ... and who knows ... waht if the guy you like, loves your eyes, but whenever he tries to look at you, ur hair is covering that half of ur face that can be seen by where he is standing? short hair rocks and it gets us females LOTTS of GOOD attention!

Heyhey. I'm 15 years old and I just got my hair cut pretty short. The length is at about the bottom of my ears. The problem is, I have NO idea what kind of fun ways I can style it without looking too old or too young! I've looked all over the internet and can't find anything. If anyone has any ideas PLEASE let me know! Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, it would look cute light blonde with a long fringe, one that you can peep out from beneath and shake coyly out of your eyes.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love a new hairdo, preferably shorter than what I have now, but i have half afro hair and I'm afraid I'll end up looking like Moira Stewart or Trisha.
