Boring Computer Thread: My Internet is Broke

I don't know how to fix it. Ever since I updated from Windows 95 to 98, the computer will let me dial-in, then there's a slightly protracted 'logging into the system' and it finally connects. Then when I try to access any pages it just almost automatically gives a server reset dialog box.

There's the occasional little blip (ie the green light lights) from the representation of MY computer on the little dial-up computer icon, but nothing coming the other way.

Help me please.

(I am on my laptop). IE 3.

I suck at the internet.

what exactly is a server reset dialog box?

i would think you might as well get a newer browser, though i'm sure that's not likely to be the prob here

Does your ISP use proxies? Maybe IE needs a proxy server setting. Call yr ISP, they can go over the settings...

two months pass...
Didn't want to create a new thread for something as dull as this so reviving this one.

Ok, here's the brief:
Windows XP (cracked copy)
Blueyonder broadband

I can't get into my email. Sites like hotmail, yahoo and lycos won't log in - it just loads for an eon then gives 'this page cannot be displayed'. Same happens when I try to log into Amazon and Ebay, ILX works better, takes about 3 or 4 attempts to post a message though. I use Outlook Express and it's the same with that, just stalls for ages when I hit send/receive. Also, Soulseek and Kazzaa are screwed too. Ssk keeps logging off every 5 minutes and when it is on, the d/ls run real slow and the u/ls are stuck at 0.0k/s. MSN works ok though.

Occasionally, I can get in to my hotmail account through the site (about 1 in 30 attempts), and same with Outlook. I emailed my ISP on an online form but they said it's to do with my software and therefore they wash their hands of me. I've mailed them again but no response yet.

What could it be? I'm thinking it might be something to do with that SSL certificate business. It happened totally out of the blue last Wednesday. It's stressing me out horribly as I've got some important mails coming in and to be sent out. People have said I should reinstall XP as it starts to screw up after a few months but this doesn't sound right.

If no one knows, what are a couple of good messageboards that could help with this?

That's weird that you have problems with both web-based email and regular pop-based (I assume) email. Go to an internet cafe and check your email there to confirm that it is indeed your computer. Then I suppose check your pop/imap settings, it could be the ssl too. Try restoring defaults That's the extent of my knowledge, sorry and good luck!

Teeny, I did what you said and an hour later it was all working fine, so thanks a lot!

fourteen years pass...

Video plays way too fast in chrome, across multiple platforms (youtube, facebook, etc.). Only the video is sped up but audio is normal speed. It's not an extension causing the problem -- I tried with all extensions disabled.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 26 February 2018 03:34 (seven years ago)

Sounds like a streaming/caching issue of some sort.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 26 February 2018 04:58 (seven years ago)

FWIW I cleared my cache and it did not help.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 26 February 2018 05:29 (seven years ago)

Could it have anything to do with the insane number of tabs I have open right now on account of my doing research for work atm?
