This film about the Pynchonmyth opens at the ICA this week. I personally had never heard of it before... has anyone seen it? Is it worth seeing? Does anyone fancy going to see it? It has a soundtrack by the Residents!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 28 April 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, alright then :)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 28 April 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to start a thread on this! it got mentioned in the guardian book reviews section on saturday. but yeah, i'd like to see it.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Shall we turn this into the inaugural FAF (fancy a flick)?

It is showing:

Fri 02 May - Tue 06 May
18:30 Cinema 2
20:30 Cinema 2

and then off and on 'til the end of May. This weekend sometime would probably best for me.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're friends of P, you're friends of me.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Sunday or Monday would seem sensible, possibly with pintage to follow?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the 6.30 showing on Sunday then? (so any post-P pintage pain will fall on the Bank Hol rather than a school day?)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a nice idea!

(what is the pinefox's opinion of cinema?)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The cat on acid footage is awesome.

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Monday, 28 April 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I wld like to attend this FAF!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm rather tempted myself. Tell us more about the film!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 28 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be there in spirit. Cat on acid?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

People still up for this? Meet in the ICA foyer at 6.15?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not absolutely sure if I'm coming. I like the meet bit, I like the idea of FAFs, and I like Pynchon. I'm not convinced the film will hold up its part. See how I feel on Sunday.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh fuck i forgot abt this i think i said yes to another thing I AM DROWNING IN ART

mark s (mark s), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

residents make bad thing 1000 x worse non-shocker

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 2 May 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not going to be able to make this, sadly, cos i'm going to a bbq.

incidentally there's an edited extract from pynchon's new intro to 1984 in today's guardian.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 3 May 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I shall be there, I think. If anyone fancies coming along who I haven't met before I shall be the guy in specs wearing a cream corduroy jacket with a badge saying "South London" pinned to the pocket.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 4 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yes sorry JtN, i just got back from my other engagement and am going to unwind at home :(

have a nice movie i hope

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 4 May 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Most surprising Momus ref. ever! He's a fan of the Rentals??

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 4 May 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry again, JtN - I decided I'd go down the pub and watch the football.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 4 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't make it either, sadly... which is a shame. Anyone fancy trying to arrange a second outing if the Nipper comes back with a favourable review?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 4 May 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Has P been released into the Amurkkka yet?

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 4 May 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

P = Jandek!!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 4 May 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry I didn't make this. I was working until 6pm, and was so tired I prob. would've snoozed through the movie anyway.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 5 May 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Nipper sez:

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! Really depressing and boring mess of a film. I don't think you could find more inarticulate people to talk about Pynchon if you tried (they round up three internet mentalists, an ex-girlfriend and the well-known nutcase Jules Siegel [who claims Pynchon was implicated in the CIA's introduction of LSD to destabilise the New Left]). Only George Plimpton (who waffles charmingly) - and Prof Corey (who collected the NBA on Pynchon's behalf and contributes some nice readings) contribute very much at all. In fact, the only worthwhile thing I can take from the whole experience is a sighting of the goon who runs The Libyrinth WHO REALLY DOES LOOK LIKE HE HAS THE BEARD OF TOM EWING AND THE HAIR OF NED RAGGETT. What a fabulous chimera.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 5 May 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking of seeing this on tue just for the resident's soundtrack (but I guess that isn't worth the money since you didn't mention it).

did the pinefox enjoy it?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 May 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

WHO REALLY DOES LOOK LIKE HE HAS THE BEARD OF TOM EWING AND THE HAIR OF NED RAGGETT. What a fabulous chimera.

I have fears.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i mentioned the residents s/t yo! but then i hate the residents. it felt like it was positing everything into this gonzo 60s hippy drug thing

3 days later and this film still feels awful. watching the final hateful 'revelation' (of p walking with his kid... wow) was interminable

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 5 May 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried reading GR again yesterday. Then I remembered what I thought of it.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no, Jules 513g31, OH NO. What an arse.

Thomas Pynchon

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Just in case, here's a link to the P.'s liner notes to rubbish faux-REMsters Lotion's album "Nobody's Cool"

http://www.themodernword.com/pynchon/pynchon_music_lotion.html

Wacky.

BTW, isn't Vineland a great and horribly underrated novel?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, isn't Vineland a great and horribly underrated novel?

no.
