Yeah, but so is The Real World et al...
I just cannot see anyone getting worked up about this show either way. It's too insubstantial.

It's possible to get bored of something which you found hilarious at first. That opening episode, with no expectations on my part as I hadn't even heard about it when I watched it, was the best fun I had watching TV all year. I don't watch it any more - there's only so far one joke can go, and the spin-offs, whether in terms of pop careers, news stories or adverts, dilute any appeal still further.
BUT it was a genuine phenomenon. I wonder how many of the nay-sayers we could find praising it to the eyeballs on earlier threads?

is it true that MTV Hits gets better ratings than MTV these days?
― j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)
what we need is the digital TV equivalent of pirate radio. you should just be able to grab the gear all cheap and nasty and be able to broadcast alongside the officials on one of those many unused channel numbers.
― stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)
I hate MTV now. Back when my mam and dad first became Rupert Murdoch's bitches (1995 or so), MTV Europe rules. They used to play some good videos by non-chart artists mid-afternoon and stuff. And the VeeJays were comedy. Also there was good specialist programming like Alternative Nation and Chill-Out Zone - and I used to love it. However nowadays MTV is wall-to-wall fratboys skateboarding into piles of manure and teenage girls having their hair styled like Beyonce
I mean for fucks sake
And MTV2 has been rubbish for yonks and yonks too

They still have Chill Out Zone though Joe, many's the night I've flicked between it and ITV's weirdo ambient close music while off my head with a beer in my hand.

I can't only remember that woman from Salad. And I used to loathe Davina when she was on it (that's not to say I like her now of course).

There's a message for us all there.

Simone Angel (the dance presenter - cute, slightly mental, half-Dutch i think...according to my source now lives in Belize having married a footballer)
Ray Cokes (silver foxed presenter of Most Wanted, last seen dying on his arse presenting a live show in germany...i heard he continues work as a DJ/presenter in France or Germany tho)
Paul King and Pip Dann (both rubbish hence fucked off to VH-1 when MTV Europe dissolved into regional variations)
Lisa I'Anson (raspy soul-lover got the Radio 1 job, but where is she now?)
Toby Amies (sp?) (ultimate indie-boy - presented 'Alternative Nation' - quite similar to the brilliant guy who presents Popworld on C4 - again, have no idea where he is now)
Igor something - i think he was Czech, he was okay...then there was that Hugo guy, the Spaniard, pass...
can't quite remember the names of the girls who presented Headbangers Ball and SuperRock but wonder what happened to them too

how can you loathe the genius behind 'Boom Bang-A-Bang'?
― stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)
the main problem with it is that it is a part of MTV's heavy rotation policy - and it is this that i find the most offensive part of it all - see also Dirty sanchez, jackass, real world, and all those other MTV 'youth' shows

A lone voice - I don't like the Osbornes, but I do like JACK (he's in rehab!). Hate me now.

I have a recurrent fantasy about Lulu's "WE-E-E-E-E-E-E-ELL" being drowned out by the sound of the celebrity meat grinder
