Osbornes backlash right here

anyone sick of em yet? i fuckin am. the show is on MTV every night now it seems...what pisses me off most is there's always some Andy Williams/Frank Sinatra soundtracking whatever 'kerazy punk-rock hi-jinx' Jack or Kelly are up to now (potential separate thread question: can you have real punk attitude whilst being stinking rich? i'm not convinced...). also, the 'renewing of marriage vows' one where Ozzy is just really milking the 'i'm fookin mad me, check this out' and everyone is just doubling up with laughter - meh...numerous other cheesy moments, i dunno the over-saturation by the media of them (advertising fucking Pepsi and Doritos like they need the money?) has killed the appeal of them and the show off for me totally. they're actually all still kinda likeable on their own terms (altho Kelly's attention-craving bitch going thru motions routine is getting annoying, and her music is ARSE). its a neat glimpse into life for obscenely rich people who revel in their trash credentials but the constant portrayal of them as loveable, almost institutionalised rabble-rock royalty is seeming ever more contrived thus ever more irritating/a turn off.

Backlash? I've always thought this show was horrible. Sharon managed to do what the PMRC never could do.

hstencil, Monday, 28 April 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

For mine there was never a front-lash. I could never imagine anybody with an IQ above that of the average piece of wood ever wanting to watch it. Everything I've heard about the show and the way it is breathlessly publicised in the shit media (with !!!!! marks all over the place) confirms what a total load of bollocks it is.

Yeah, but so is The Real World et al...

I just cannot see anyone getting worked up about this show either way. It's too insubstantial.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

thats funny, i thought everyone LURVED it/them, altho i have no idea what basis i had for thinking that with regards to the ILE collective...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

They should kick everyone but Kelly and the Australian nanny off the show

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm getting faint whiffs of "oh, The Osbournes isn't cool to like any longer, so now I'm going to make snarky comments about it knowing the zeitgeist is with me".

It's possible to get bored of something which you found hilarious at first. That opening episode, with no expectations on my part as I hadn't even heard about it when I watched it, was the best fun I had watching TV all year. I don't watch it any more - there's only so far one joke can go, and the spin-offs, whether in terms of pop careers, news stories or adverts, dilute any appeal still further.

BUT it was a genuine phenomenon. I wonder how many of the nay-sayers we could find praising it to the eyeballs on earlier threads?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"can you have real punk attitude whilst being stinking rich?"

history teaches us that this is not unknown

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not denying it wasnt a genuine phenomenon - i enjoyed most of the first series. now i'm quite naturally bored.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

personally I didn't like it ever

is it true that MTV Hits gets better ratings than MTV these days?

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

there are new digital music channels starting up everyday i notice - its the new dotcom boom...i predict tears before bedtime. at the weekend i decided i wanted to launch my own music channel but baulked at the £300,000 + license etc. it would take to buy the flexicard and other contraptions and such. bah.

what we need is the digital TV equivalent of pirate radio. you should just be able to grab the gear all cheap and nasty and be able to broadcast alongside the officials on one of those many unused channel numbers.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

they're all the same phone-in-to-select-a-vid though - I have seven or eight of those channels and quite regularly you catch three or four of them all playing the same video at the same time

I hate MTV now. Back when my mam and dad first became Rupert Murdoch's bitches (1995 or so), MTV Europe rules. They used to play some good videos by non-chart artists mid-afternoon and stuff. And the VeeJays were comedy. Also there was good specialist programming like Alternative Nation and Chill-Out Zone - and I used to love it. However nowadays MTV is wall-to-wall fratboys skateboarding into piles of manure and teenage girls having their hair styled like Beyonce

I mean for fucks sake

And MTV2 has been rubbish for yonks and yonks too

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmmmmm... inhale that focus group aroma...

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What were the VeeJays names again? There was that blonde girl who was really funny.

They still have Chill Out Zone though Joe, many's the night I've flicked between it and ITV's weirdo ambient close music while off my head with a beer in my hand.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I never. Is it any cop?

I can't only remember that woman from Salad. And I used to loathe Davina when she was on it (that's not to say I like her now of course).

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

can not can't

damn my mittens

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelly Osbourne in the Doritos advert... stupid fucking move, unless it was an attempt to cash in on the Fray Bentos "We make all the pies" still of advertising. Then she got dropped from the ads within a week, and replaced by Streatham High Street.

There's a message for us all there.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

MTV Europe VJs we have known and loved:

Simone Angel (the dance presenter - cute, slightly mental, half-Dutch i think...according to my source now lives in Belize having married a footballer)

Ray Cokes (silver foxed presenter of Most Wanted, last seen dying on his arse presenting a live show in germany...i heard he continues work as a DJ/presenter in France or Germany tho)

Paul King and Pip Dann (both rubbish hence fucked off to VH-1 when MTV Europe dissolved into regional variations)

Lisa I'Anson (raspy soul-lover got the Radio 1 job, but where is she now?)

Toby Amies (sp?) (ultimate indie-boy - presented 'Alternative Nation' - quite similar to the brilliant guy who presents Popworld on C4 - again, have no idea where he is now)

Igor something - i think he was Czech, he was okay...then there was that Hugo guy, the Spaniard, pass...

can't quite remember the names of the girls who presented Headbangers Ball and SuperRock but wonder what happened to them too

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegbran to thread, big time

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

detroy Zane Lowe - with extreme prejudice.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that Kelly Doritos ad makes me laugh in a way. i'm a bit like the utter twat of the guy who goes up to complain. only if it was me and she answered the door with that stupid sour-faced 'its some idiot coming up to complain about the noise' jibe i'd retor 'dam right you spoilt hussy, play something COOL instead' then tweak her nose and run off cackling

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved Zane at first...but try as he might, he just couldnt quite make liking Linkin Park 'cool' bless him. the Adam & Joe parodies were tres excellent tho

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I loathe Zane Lowe

He's right up there with Lulu, Nicky Campbell and Lowri Turner on my list of hate

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Lulu?

how can you loathe the genius behind 'Boom Bang-A-Bang'?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont dislike the osbournes at all - on the contrary i think it is great, if only as a guide to show me exactley what my kids will NOT be like.

the main problem with it is that it is a part of MTV's heavy rotation policy - and it is this that i find the most offensive part of it all - see also Dirty sanchez, jackass, real world, and all those other MTV 'youth' shows

james (james), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Marijne Van Der Flugt= THAT woman out of Salad. I used to fink she woz well fit.

A lone voice - I don't like the Osbornes, but I do like JACK (he's in rehab!). Hate me now.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

still shame about Ray Coakes tho

What rehab is jack in and for what - Cake addiction, or too much Ritlin

james (james), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem, do you really want me to launch into an anti-Lulu tirade?

And yes Marijne was well fit if you like women who look like Bev from Brookside. Cracking tunes though

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"tunes" = "breasts"

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm so so sorry)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

but what about Lulu's "love loves to love" CRACKING

james (james), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

don't make me do it james

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

old Lulu music is great

i like Jack too

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

to sir with love....sniff....sniff....heartbreakin

You know you make me wanna..............come on j0e join in with me

...SHOUT woooooooooooo

......Shout wooooooooooo

james (james), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

.....Throw your head back

.......come on now

james (james), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, here goes. Lulu is the most annoying person ever. I loathe the way she digs her crooked talons into whatever boyband is doing the rounds at present in a bid to keep in the spotlight. I hate the way she goes "WE-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-ELL" in every interview and then proclaims hating having to sing "Shout" all the time. And oh I'm so angry about her I can't think of any other reasons off the top of my head apart from the fact I once had a nightmare where a giant Lulu stepped out from behind Docklands, went "WE-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-ELL" and destroyed London

And OH this terrifying multi-lulued spinning cube thing looks like something that would power an evil spaceship

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Shout is the worst song ever. Man my ears

I have a recurrent fantasy about Lulu's "WE-E-E-E-E-E-E-ELL" being drowned out by the sound of the celebrity meat grinder

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

fair points actually - fucX her

james (james), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Lulu can't actually help saying 'well' like that...ever since she was a kid it was like 'Lulu want do you want for dinner luv?' and she'd be like "WE-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-ELL....it could be sausage egg and beans, or spag-hetti, or steak & kidney...dont forget to add the chips' etc.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, i love that cube...proof that Lulu is omnipotent master of the universe - as a multi-faced cube she floats through the galaxies dispensing butter candy and husky sentiments to the good peoples of the universe

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i said universe twice - DAMN

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been inspired to start a thread

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Early-90s MTV Europe was, indeed, great

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelly roX0r. Fuck I want some Doritos now.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)
