The foreign tongue thread.

So, apart from me and Geir, are there any other posters who don't live in any of the Anglo-Saxon countries (= posters who don't speak English as their first tongue)? There was Tiit from Estonia, if I remember correctly... Anyone else? Do you at any time have translation problems because of the "sophisticated" (better put quotes on that one) language used in here? I know I'm sometimes stretching the limits of my English skills trying to keep up with these boards. It's a lot of fun, still.

message boards are really good for keeping up with a language that you can have direct contact with. if i didnt look at 2step.ru all the time, my russian woulkd have died a long time a go. but the lsang does make it pretty impenetrable. i dread to think what it would be like to work out what the hell is going on here if i wasnt native speaker english.

I've learned English mostly by reading comics and watching movies. Ten years of studying English at school is secondary to that (at high school, I never did my English homework). It's true I don't always get the jokes, but the more I stay here, the easier it gets.

yeah i mean your level of englsih is like 100000000000000% better than my grasp of russian

tuomas, your english is like 10000000000% better than my grasp of english!

(Not everybody here who lives in a non-Anglophone country isn't a native speaker of English, you know.)

there was an Eastern European woman who used sometimes post to ILM.

I discovered yesterday that English is not the first language of one of my colleagues... she is a GAELGEOIR.

What, she speaks Gaelish? Where did she grow up?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Although many claim I sound like a native English speaker, my first language is Flemish. (I also speak crap French, German and Japanese.) I started learning English from the age of nine. Since most films on Belgian television channels are subtitled, it was easy to learn it.

hm, occasionally it is kinda complicated-ish to figure out wot some foax are on about 'xaktly - but then again it sometimes may have to do with my own lazy thinkin'. depends on the subject too - rather greatly.

I speak English better than I do German (my first language) or Portuguese (the language of the country where I live.) It's actually quite worrying.

What, she speaks Gaelish? Where did she grow up?

well, Irish Gaelic. Irish, as we call it. She grew up in the West of Ireland, in one of those areas where they still speak it.

in fairness, I think English might actually be her first language, but she said they would speak a lot of Irish down there.

I can't read english and, as you can see, i can't write it neither.

four years pass...

I have decided that Malay is the world's greatest language. Here is a selection of words I have learned this week:

Ogos - August
Teksi - Taxi
Polis - Police (just like in Scotland!)
Inggeris - English
