How are you feeling about/towards ILX *right now*?

Is it exciting, inspiring, titillating you? Is it flat, irritable, repetitive? Too many kittens? Not enough kittens? Is it making you happy? Is it making you angry?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really enjoying it. Should I feel bad?

Not enough munkis, tho'!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been working on making it the best possible cure for office boredom that I know. I think this is far more constructive than bitching about the tone it's been taking lately. It has taken on a threatening and bitchy tone, yes, but it is *our* responsibility to change that. Hence why I've been trying every day to start a non-threatening non-bitchy thread on minutia which I find interesting.

Honestly, I stay out of threads with "kittens" in the title. Kittens bore the fuck out of me.

kate, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

would a wombat be more helpful ?

kate, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

im worried that noone will see my post about werckmeister harmonies, which i would like to know other peoples opinions, and maybe some info about bela tarr.

but noone ever pays any attentioon to my posts so this is par for course

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Wolf cubs = twee and menacing in one go. Yay!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Wolf cubs != twee! Wolves = heavy metal thunder and all that. Bobby G named his child Wolf, hence they are dirty and dronerock by default!

kate, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel good abt it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ilx currently feels more like work than play = there is a lot of it, and probably some i wd find v.funny/useful/entertaining/educational, but going through every thread is daunting and i won't

so i feel sad, cz i'm missing good stuff probbly

but of course i am v.busy at REAL LIFE GROWN UP WORK (except today), so naturally i baulk at further lengthy tasks

reports of its demise are exaggerated as ever

in the farthest shore the rogue wizard uses pelnish lore to abolish death, but all that happens is that everyone is captured in a miserable, ratty, senseless limbo

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yo ambrose where is that post, i wanna check that flick out too

Chip Morningstar (bob), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX:

"...and once more life in its workaday clothes flaunts itself before him"

Chip Morningstar (bob), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"ratty"!

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i posted that it on i love film now.as well as the paul thomas anderson thread - doubling up nightmare!

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think more meta=not less betta.

ILx is OK.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Vaguely bored, but glad for the distraction...

Ratty! I am going to get pet rats!

Hey Mark did I remember to email you about the Quatermass and the Pit thing? You should come (and I should remember to book tickets).

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

no!! email me (maybe you emailed work, i'm at home today)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(oddly enuff there is a passage in one of the other earthsea books where the many names of "moly" are discussed)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dur what a spaz I am. I was convinced I did - consider yrself emailed. And if it hasn't arrived ARGH THE COUNCIL IS SO EEEEVIL!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The best 'moly' is obviously 'guac'.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I really did not know very much about people before I started coming here.

People in general seem to be less prone to liberalism and humanism and experimentation than I had assumed (having, before this, got my ideas about people from art, as well as the odd art school student and style press journalist).

I am fascinated by this pattern:

A proposes something quite liberal or even experimental.
B finds it too liberal but, owing to fear of exiting the liberal concensus, cannot attack from the right, therefore attacks from the left. A thinks she is being liberal, explains B, but in fact is being very conservative. Indeed. Dangerously so, in fact.

At its worst, this becomes 'Lord of the Flies'. At its best it's Damian Hirst's 'One Thousand Days' (two glass cases connected by small holes, a cows head, a fly zapper and some flies).

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

alright guv, you have your pound of flesh, now off to the boozer

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the above statement is baffling, because it presumes momus is a liberal. i find momus interesting and he has a couple of good records but he needs to become more liberal, not less. there is too much restriction and not enough play

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I am having trouble understanding. Example might help, perhaps?

kate, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You needed ILX to teach you that, Momus? Blimey.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ie momus is typical ilx poster, not atypical

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

typical lad type also, covered up by an eyepatch and a musical career but hey.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

haha momus in "i disdain to communicate w.people who do not already agree w.me" shockah

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oops edgy stylelab hivemind

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the above statement is baffling, because it presumes momus is a liberal. i find momus interesting and he has a couple of good records but he needs to become more liberal, not less

Ha ha ha! You just made exactly the move I was describing!

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone else having trouble detecting the disturbing conservatism in Gareth's post?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd make an ugly girl, momus.

plus.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

there is too much restriction and not enough play

This is absurd! How do I restrict? How could I play more? Or are you talking about ilX?

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd really appreciate some specifics, rather than just random Momus-chatter, please. Otherwise, I'm going to have to walk off this thread in boredom. Which seems to be happening worryingly more and more on ILX lately...

kate, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mind when ILX challenges or even infuriates me. What I dislike is when it *bores* me.

kate, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah that one's a real killer.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

''I really did not know very much about people before I started coming here.''

that does explain a lot.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

'Give up smoking? Sure I could give up smoking. It's boring. I give it up every five minutes.'

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, I am mainly feeling exasperated with ILX.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been doing my best on ILM, ILE is a bit harder work. There are still funny posts and jokes and things, but it's a new crowd really, or maybe they feel it's an old crowd, I don't know.

AIM Chats can be good too.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget ILF!!! :)

N3wb13 (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

To give Kate her specifics:

1. I say that people on ILX are not liberal, experimental or humanist enough.
2. I describe how they attack lib-ex-hum positions from the left, not the right.
3. Gareth, attack from the left, says that I am not liberal or playful enough.
4. Ronan, putting himself to the left of me, calls me a 'typical lad type'.
5. Mark S, putting himself to the left of me, calls me 'intolerant of opinions other than my own'.
6. Matt then defends Gareth's liberalism.
7. Kate then declares the conversation boring.
8. Exception to the 'attack from the left flank': 'You needed ILX to teach you that' and 'that does explain a lot'. These comments are 'You may be right, but you're naive' rather than 'You are conservative'.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

claire danes, she's all "self-respecting" and shit.

uh dude, she bonked ben lee, therefore i can't believe she has any self-respect left.

right now, hmmmm, okay I guess. I open around 1 in 10 threads. Actually I only open every 10th thread. It's my my ILX decemation policy. Miss Danes doesn't need to be naked.

I can't even really read ILE anymore, but I like the smaller boards a lot. I am proud of ILX and its achievements, in a way, much more than I used to be, which might have more to do with me than it.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

What I have learned from ilx/ile so far:

Liberal viewpoints are always right even when they are wrong.

Experimental forms of art are always better than traditional art forms even when they suck.

Humanist is better than Bushido.

Being sober is better than being drunk unless you are awake.

There is no shame in being shunned, banished or bad mouthed by the ilx/ile community.
