B-but my mom makes a FINE batch of fig perserves. They're ok, right?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was about Financial Institutions/Groups.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

But they wore FIGLEAVES in the Garden of Eden!!!

kate, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

only after Satan told 'em to, kate.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, I guess that proves it there! But... but... so Fig Newtons really are the cookies of the Devil!

kate, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah, figs are sort of naughty looking. now i want some!
i think the machine downstairs has fig newtons, free of god-hate?

kephm, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

God hates FOGS as well. Have you ever noticed that the liberal bastions of the U.S. tend to be foggy? There's no fog in Kansas, unless it's the righteous fog of pesticide fumes!

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen fog in Kansas.

What about Devil Dogs, kate?

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought of the keebler elves as satans little minions.

kephm, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Jesus did cuss out a fig tree. (I typed that before checking out the link.)

If fig newtons really have figs in them you don't need the internet to tell you they are the devil's cookies. Anything masquerading as a baked treat but containing dried fruit is wrong, wrong, wrong.

isadora (isadora), Thursday, 1 May 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

eight years pass...

Got a couple of pounds of ripe figs this morning from my parents. I've never dealt with fresh figs before -- recommendations? The simpler the better.

thanks hanle y, I knew I could count on you, for something.

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

figs stuffed with goat cheese, or better yet, tear off the stem, stick your pinky into the fruit, fill with port and eat. Figs and prosciutto are always good. Figs and honey and nuts are fun, too.

If they aren't dead-ripe, I recommend grilling and serving with cheese and honey.

quincie, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

First time I had fresh figs was in a clafouti.

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

If they aren't dead-ripe

You can always let them ripen, too...

in an arrangement that mimics idiocy (Michael White), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, but ime if they are too far from ripe they go directly to moldy whilst bypassing ripeness.

quincie, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

These are at their peak right now. Might run to the store for a bit of goat cheese this evening. If only I had some port! If only I weren't in a dry county!

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

Cut figs open like a flower, put in a baking dish, put some butter in the middle of each, drizzle over honey, cinnamon and pistachios. Grill for 5 mins and have with mascarpone or ice cream.

kinder, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

That sounds good, kinder. I don't have much of a sweet tooth so I always think of figs as something to eat with cheese and charcuterie and rosé - perfect for a summer picnic. Hopefully the tomatoes and stone fruits are thriving too.

It's about as far as my making desserts goes :) (actually I made an awesome chocolate mousse for a BBQ this weekend and smashed some raspberries around in it; was proud as it was a++++)

kinder, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

Sounds tasty. Raspberries or raspberry coulis is good w/chocolate

bought a pint of figs b/c of this thread btw. not regretting having done so atm.

steady yachting (Pillbox), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

cold gettin' dumb (m coleman), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

brownie, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

Hot Tub Timelord (Latham Green), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
