So, like, what is there to do in Seville?

As I am going there for the UEFA Cup Final. Has anyone been? What sights should I see? I don't want to go all that way, watch the football and come home - I might as well make the most of it. Any recommendations?

1. Go to the Cathedral. It's immense, and very very cool. Plus Christopher Columbus is buried there (or at least, they think he is).

2. Go to the Real Alcazar. Also very cool, interesting blend of architectural styles.

3. If you're not squeamish, go to the bullfights. I think the season should be up-and-running right now.

4. You can check out the World's Fair grounds, altho I didn't.

5. Walk by the riverside.

6. Spend a lot of time in the Barrio de Santa Cruz. Lots of amazing little tiny alleys and old homes. And good bars.

7. You just missed the big festival thingy (is it called the Santa Semana or something like that?), but you could check out the icon/virgin statue thingy.

8. There are some Roman ruins outside the city that look kinda cool, but I got there too late to get in.

also, walk in the "downtown" area where all the shops are. Shopping is good, and there are a ton of awesome street performers.

Ha ha ron. My dad said that too.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and thanks hstencil. I have searched for some stuff, but it's better if it comes recommended by others.

Oh, and no bull-fighting. Ewww!! I went to the bullfighting museum in Ronda last time I was in Spain and that was enough.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I didn't go either, but then again it was November and the Plaza del Toros was closed.

I went in April and it poured with rain to an extraordinary degree - there were waterfalls pouring from the gargoyles on the cathedral. It was pretty magnificent, when we weren't feeling miserable from the rain. Yeah, it's a terrific cathedral, and the alcazar is good (though we'd been to the Alhambra a couple of days before, which was even better), and the Barrio, and there are lots of nice places to walk (the river is one, but there are little parks full of orange trees, which smelt great when the rain stopped). There's at least one art museum, possibly devoted to Murillo, but we didn't get there. There's lots of Carmen-related stuff too.

There's the Plaza de España, where they filmed part of the last Star Wars thing, albeit with mucho digital tinkering.

I've never been, but you might be able to extend your footballing pleasure by watching Sevilla or (the better option) Real Betis Balompie.

I think it's only about an hour to the seaside.

Don't go to the bullfights, it would be like me going to see the caber-tossing in Scotland. Actually I would quite like to do that.

Plaza de España is great. When I was there a couple of months ago with my girlfriend it just suddenly started raining massively, and we were quite cosily stuck under the huge, uh, building thing there - it was nice.

Which part of Star Wars was that, by the way? I can't imagine it.

The Alcazar is fucking sweet - a must-see.

It's the part where Anakin and Padme have just returned to Naboo and they're walking around on their way to meet the queen. You're thrilled I know. It was also used for a couple of notable scenes in Lawrence of Arabia.

i know it is an hour to seaside as my parents live in benalmadena. i go to spain (costa del sol / andalusia) a bit but i have never been to seville.

There is really nothing better.

La Giralda, the Moorish tower, is worth a visit. But I think it's part of the Alcazar, now that I think of it.

eight years pass...

Finally made it back to Seville last week just for the day, eight years after starting this thread. LOVED the cathedral (I'm a sucker for big ornate churches, and this is a total doozy, I could have stayed there all day) and the Alcazar, did a wee wander around Plaza d'Espana and some of the other 1928 Expo buildings, ate tapas, went on a trip down the river to look again at the 1992 Expo stuff (which I'd seen before when I was over for the football, which was up that end of the town). Lovely place, will go back for longer next time.

upthread basically covered it for my to-do list, but i'm pretty narrowly focused on architecture. alcazar and the cathedral (incl. la giralda) are the major must-sees. spanish gothic is so fascinating. so broad. you can really feel the influence of the more horizontal space of a mosque, even where the actual building is not a reconverted islamic structure (e.g. the bizarre interruption of the great mosque in cordoba by a little chunk of baroque church space).

for a dose of something contemporary, check out the "metropol parasol" over the plaza de la encarnación. this was still under construction when i was there so i can't vouch for how well they ultimately pulled it off, but it's kinda cool and i think maybe also includes a small archaeology museum (?) (one of those "oops, the site had archaeological remains, now we have to find a way to display them" deals). possibly will be better if you don't look at photos first. archdaily and mimoa suggest some other minor contempo stuff has predictably gone up in the last half-decade, but at a glance none of it's anything i'd plan my day around.

definitely chilling/eating/drinking on the alameda.

i was pretty good with about 36 hours in seville but again i am a narrow-minded kind of traveler and we were on a fairly punishing schedule generally, which i don't recommend for everybody. still, you might consider having up your sleeve some kinda little outing someplace else, depending on your schedule. cordoba is not very far away, and both the mosque and the streetscape are very very good. plus roman bridges and stuff like that, IIRC. granada (the alhambra) is further and probably requires a change of trains or something, but the alhambra IS pretty good. takes a chunk of time to do it right though.

great stuff, thanks!

did Granada a few years back (really liked it as far as one long day can tell), won't have car on this trip so cordoba will have to wait another time.

45 minutes by train! supposedly! plus a hike/taxi to the really old part of town. juuuust sayin!

I was only in Seville for one night. Highlights were definitely the Alcazar and Cathedral, but I enjoyed just walking around. The 18th century tobacco factory taken over by the university is neat, worth passing through if you're walking from the Cathedral/Alcazar to the Plaza de España.

I could have spent way longer in the Alcazar and Alhambra.
