How old do you look?

So many people look a very different age from what they actually are. I'm pretty sure I look a lot younger than I am. I'm constantly being surprised that these people that I think are like 25 are actually 18 or something; I'm like "woah, I'm older than you!?"

Dan I., Friday, 2 May 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

oddly enough i think i look my age

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no earthly idea. Y'all have seen a picture of me. Sometimes I get carded, sometimes I don't.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love playing the "go on, guess my age!"game when I meet people, cause I look a lot younger than I am (so Im forever told). I get guesses between 19 and 25.... and I'm 32. So that's fine with me!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've no idea anymore. As a teenager, I passed for much older (in large part because I was the same height in 3rd grade as I am now: 5'11"). I don't think that's remained the case. My hair has started to give at the temples, but I suspect I still look 27ish.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Most people think I'm in my mid to late 20s (I am 19).

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

if i took into account the ages people have thought i was, i haven't aged at allin 6 or 7 years

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

all in (not gg)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't know but I suspect I a few yrs younger than I actually am. That's fine by me.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim, I dont wanna think of you looking like gg allin, tah very much :)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I can pass for 16, though I'm almost 23.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I have always looked 35. I hope that, once I pass 35, this remains the case.

hstencil, Friday, 2 May 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been told that i look anywhere from 5-10 years younger than my age (i'm 33). it's a nice complement, and i've been told that all my life. it's also something of a family trait (i.e., Dad is now 61, but he could easily pass for someone in his 40s; Mom is 61, but looks like late 40s/early 50s). but it did suck when i turned 21 and still ended up getting carded constantly for booze and smokes for years after that.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

as people always so "no! you're never that old! my god!" i think i probably actually look older than i am, and they're being disingenuously flattering.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 2 May 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

at my old job some coworkers tried to hook me up with some old lady. i was nineteen or twenty at the time, had always figured i looked fifteen, and flipped out when i found out about the scheme. i demanded to know how old i looked and they said, "at least twenty-six."

a little piece of me died that day.

brian badword (badwords), Friday, 2 May 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I am 32.
I used to be told I look younger than I am. No-one's said it lately, possibly on account of the two or three grey hairs on each side of my head.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 2 May 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god mark, you're only 32??? i thought you were something like 23.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

does your statement make sense?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

wait... move the "only" from before the 32 to before the 23...

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure, younger than I am, 17 or 18 maybe.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 2 May 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think i look about 23-25. ok 23 might be pushing it, but def younger than i am which is 27.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 2 May 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i look about 15 :-(

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 2 May 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I look about 30 :-((

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 2 May 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

People actually think I'm lying when I tell them how old I really am, so I took a few years off my age to benefit from this. Now sometimes people will politely say I seem younger than my new age, but generally I look exactly as old as I say I am.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 2 May 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I get carded all the time for cigarettes and booze. "Are you 18?" It kind of aggravates me. Im 28 yrs old.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 2 May 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I look about 28/29, so everyone tells me. I'm 24 in two weeks.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 2 May 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 24.

I've been ID-ed buying cigarettes this year (which would make me fifteen).

Last November I had this conversation with somebody I was working with.

Jason:They're quite young aren't they? The oldest is only 23.
Me: But I'm 23!
Jason: Are you? I thought you were about my age.
Me: How old are you?
Jason: 31.
Me: Oh.

So go figure. It is usually people in a work context who think I'm older and random strangers who think I look younger. This is clearly because I approach my working life with dignity and maturity (Ha!).

Anna (Anna), Friday, 2 May 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The older women at supermarkets sometimes ID me for cigarettes etc, it's flattering!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I was IDed for 2 bottles of tsing-tsao a few months ago, I didn't have my id with me, I'd just decided they'd be nice cos I was getting a takeaway. I had my student id from this year and last year and they still wouldn't relent, I was 50 percent bemused and 50 percent annoyed, in the end I was like "this is ridiculous, why would I be buying 2 bottles of tsing tsao if I was under-age, everyone would think I was a twat."

I stormed out and then realised I'd left my id on the counter which ruined it really. I think it was cos I had shorter hair than my photos at the time. either way it was embarassing.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea, it's not for me to say. I haven't really had anybody comment on my age one way or another in a long time, so I don't know.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Nicole no one ever comments on it but I would really like to know how old I look. Friends' opinions are too biased but going up to strangers and saying 'Guess how old I am? Go on GUESS?' is way too mental. Last year on my (27th) birthday I drunkenly told a bloke in a club that I was 19 and he laughed. bastard.

Emma, Friday, 2 May 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually get "about 26 or 27" which is nice coz I'm 33. I'm beginning not to be able to get away with the "I'm 22!" line any more, though, sadly. :-(

The age people assume I am depends on my weight. When I'm overweight the guesses go up into the 30s. When I was 19 or 20, I shot up to about 13 stone, I never got carded coz people thought I was about 30.

kate, Friday, 2 May 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm 40 but i look a bunch younger if i wear a hat

duanE, Friday, 2 May 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

& dark glasses & a false beard & KISS style makeup

Duane, Friday, 2 May 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Growing up people always thought I was much older than I really was because I was so freaking tall. I remember going on a church trip with my cousins' church and everyone thought I was 16 (I was only 11 or 12). I was completely flattered.

I don't know how old I look now. I think I still look a little older than I really am, but I don't dress like it. Or act like it for that matter (when I'm not at work). I dunno. How old do I look?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I look about 15. Unless I've not had any sleep or something, in which case I look about 42. I wonder if the two extremes will get even worse as I get older, and if I will ever look 20.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

minus the facial hair, maybe 3/4 years younger than i am: 17 or so, maybe even 16. i haven't been IDed for quite a while now, but it still happens every now and then. on the udder hand, i've had a few recent instances where foax i didn't know thought i was at least as old as i am (20) - two people asked me what i did for a living ("oh, still studying?") and one weird, random guy correctly guessed my age ("how old are you, twenty?").

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it when people ask me where I go to school cuz I've been out of college for 4 years now!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

At work people often assume I'm a student worker rather than a full-time wage slave, which I guess means I look a few years younger/slacker than I am.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Still sometimes get carded. This pleases me. Avoiding the sun has had its benefits.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't look a day over 25

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I got asked for ID at nice 'n' sleazy's on christmas day last year. but it was the same big dozey guy that I'd had tons of conversations with before. he asked me if I was 'in the band' one time. I said 'do I look like I am...?' and he said 'I don't know.' he looked at my friend's ID for five minutes because his last name was 'lightfoot'. I think he takes drugs.

if people ask and I ask them to guess they guess twenty-four or so. this is because I am very mature for my age. I am twenty-two.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Since about the age of 15 people have thought me to be somewhere between 25 and 33.

Ed (dali), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i look younger than I am. I would not pass for 21.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I still get carded, but in San Francisco they'd probably card my parents. I think up until a couple years ago I looked a lot younger than my age; in the last couple years I've gotten these two lines between my eyebrows that give me a look of constant worry or concern. I think this is from being in front of a computer monitor all day (almost) every day. I still look a few years younger than 35. Having no grey hair and being thin helps.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The good thing about being relatively flat-chested as a teenager is that I was able to pay kids' rates for films until I was about 18, and ride the bus for a dime.

Most people have me down as one of the under-30s to say the very least, and I was carded for booze ON A THURSDAY NIGHT IN HAMPSTEAD (eg. aspiring teenaged drinkers EVERYWHERE) at the ripe old age of 25.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I was barred from a gig once last year bcz i looked too young. I'm 23.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I always, always, always get guessed to within a year (i'm 29). So I reckon that if the baldness adds a few years, my charming, wide-eyed, sweet and innocent face must balance it out the other way.

Moisturise your eyes. That's the secret.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ow the moisturiser burns my eyes

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am 24. When I was in London last year some door man wanted to card me before I could enter a club. In London! Where you only have to be like 4 years old to drink. I said how old do I look. He said 16. Anyway, he let me in after I started dying laughing and my Swedish friend made him feel stupid. But, I do look really young sometimes, especially since I rarely wear makeup and still have clothes I wear from the 9th grade.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I get carded for cigs almost every time I shave, I can look pretty young. Wait I should qualify that, there's no one in my bathroom asking me for identification. It happens after I leave the house. Anyway, like Carey I never buy new clothes. (But does that make you look older or younger?)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Where you only have to be like 4 years old to drink

You're getting London confused with Russia, Carey.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how old I look at all. I, too, change greatly in appearance when I shave, but I am also losing, or prety much have lost, most of the hair on the top. I actually want to know how old I appear... Gareth, Jlu, Mary, Geeta, Tom, Sarah, Nick? What do you think? Do I look 22? I do want to know (ie no need for obsequy).
I rarely get IDed anymore, and I really haven't been for years. I used to be able to get into bars in NYC at 18, though that may be partly due to my strategy. I would always go to yuppie bars in Soho, the kind of place where nobody with a hip or very young (18-25)bone in their body would go unless they had a perverse fascination with "Thirtysomething".

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer, at least in my situation it makes me look younger, because I still have a lot of big, bright, striped t-shirts from my hanging out with sk8ter boys era. Plus I don't brush my hair too often, no makeup so I have that whole 16 year old tomboyish vibe going on sometimes. I CAN dress up but most of the time I can't be bothered.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

these days, I look to be about 36.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhere between 19 and 25.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

65 on a good day.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently younger than my actual age of 36. I mean, I look in the mirror and see a bald spot emerging above my forehead...but last year, someone pegged me for 25.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of people have said I can pass for 25 due to having few real lines, but I don't believe a word of it. I think the state of my complexion negates any positive points. I believe I about look my age, which is a terrifying 34.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was 34, people thought I was 23. Now I'm 43, people think I'm 35. I'm sure you could add these numbers up to 666 somehow.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i think graham said i look 14 once, i generally don't get numbers quite that low but usually ppl guess 2-3 yrs younger than i am. except once when a stripper thought i was 27. i think i look my age.

minna (minna), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I look my age, I think (32), though most people find it hard to believe I'm over 30. Must be a maturity thing.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm at that age where I look to be anywhere from 17-30. I got a manicure last month, the manucurist thought I was in highschool. She asked me if I'd walked to the salon or if my mom dropped me off. Also I took the bus a lot last fall because my car was kaput for about 3 weeks. I sat in front of some 13 year old girls who thought I went to their school. I laughed and told them I was 37 (Which I am not, I'm 23). They gasped and said, "But you look OUR age!" Hah! But then my new co-workers thought I was 26. But one of them also thought I was her age, and she's 19. So I guess I just don't know.

Mandee, Friday, 2 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I look around 23-4, but I guess I should ask other people how old I look. I'm 27 btw.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously too young since I often get mistaken for a student here at school (a middle school.) Once in the cafeteria line I cut ahead of the kids and grabbed a tray only to be promptly yelled at by one of the lunch ladies. Another teacher behind me said, "no, she's faculty." The lunch lady seemed embarrassed. I was mortified.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I still get regularly carded at the liquor store, especially when I'm not going for that manly three-day stubble look so popularized by Don Johnson in the classic '80s television series Miami Vice.
I'm 31, so I welcome the hassle. I don't mind getting out the wallet.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, I think you look 26, just a wee bit older than myself.

Sarah McLuskjy (coco), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Last year, when i was twenty, I worked at a restaurant with a bunch of seventeen-year-olds, and I found out after about three months that they all thought I was younger than they were. And now I work at a grocery store, and you have to be eighteen to ring up liquor, and people are always hesitant to step up to my register with it, kind of stepping halfway up then stopping and saying "Wait, are you old enough to ring this up?" This is because I am very immature for my age.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

25 or a tall 13 year old depending on what i decide to wear for the day.

Honda (Honda), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I'm middle-aged, balding, funny-shaped and unattractive: I never give anyone the opportunity to take a guess.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've somehow hit a point where I won't look older than my mid to late 20s.. (I'm 31 now)... that is, if I keep bleaching my hair, balding or not. Once I let the salt n' pepper loose, I presume that will change immediately.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite mistaken age-identity incident was when I was 26, working at Tower Records. I was very pregnant on the salesfloor. A customer called for the manager and totally chewed him out. "Why are you having that pregnant teen work your salesfloor and lift heavy boxes?" "He was like, "Uh...I guess she'll tell me when she's ready to put em down and take a seat? She's 26."

Then while I was raising the infant, a neighbor asked me out. I was curious as to why and what the attraction was. He said that teen mom's were a turn on!

Now I am only accused of being a teenager if you are not within 10 feet of me. Young from afar...but far from young.

i'm 23, and the drinking age is 18. i constantly get IDed. but i fail to understand how anyone could mistake me for a 17 year old.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 4 May 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 24, and have had a few older people (my parents' age) ask me what grade in high school I'm in. Never been asked for ID in a liquor store though, probably because of my old-fart selections [Wood's Navy Rum].

Poppy (poppy), Sunday, 4 May 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to burst everyone's bubble here, but in California the legal guideline is that if the alcohol purchaser looks under 35, they are required to ask for proof of age...so it's not always because they think you are 17 years old :(

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 4 May 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, I forgot that calum said I look about fifteen.

he has never met me.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was 18 and meeting my b/f's best friend for the first time, the best friend turned on my b/f and said, you sick fuck, what is she, twelve? I'm kind of tall for a girl so it surprised me, but he may have been fucking with us. But I usually do get mistaken for younger except for work situations (although that's happening less lately, or at least they've been closer to the truth of 27). I did get carded at the bar tonight...well, the door guy asked how old I was and was disbelieving but didn't ask for my ID.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 4 May 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

im turning 40 at the end of this year, i no longer care whether i look it or not. i used to care, but i dont thnk i look terribly older or younger than my age really, and it has become pretty much irrelevant now. dunno why.

donna (donna), Sunday, 4 May 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 18 yet most people think I'm younger. A few weeks ago I went into our local newsagents to buy cigarrete papers (for my dad) and the assisstant wouldn't give me them. In the end my dad had to buy them himself. Not long ago I also got a child's ticket on my way to Uni, which was great. I look older yet always seem to attract older guys, which might be kinda creepy.

UNIVERSAL TRUTH NUMBER ONE:
EVERYONE BETWEEN 30 AND 50 YEARS OLD IS DEPRESSED WHEN NOT CARDED.

Any relation to Polanski?

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 4 May 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

If someone carded me I would assume they were taking the piss and possibly get nasty.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 4 May 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I get teased by people saying I looke 12, but I was told "honestly" that I look more like fifteen. Thanks. I'm just short.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 4 May 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I was told that I looked like a college student when I was 16. I suppose I look about the same now (at almost 18).

liz! (liz!), Sunday, 4 May 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Any relation to Polanski?

No, but some Jehovah's Witnesses came knocking at my door on 11th St, NW WDC many moons ago. My wife who was 23 at the time answered the door. WHen they saw me in the living room they screamed kidnap or something similar and that I should be put in jail for carrying on with such a young child. For some odd reason it made me feel pretty good.
