They turned the pick and roll into a perfect work of art! 18 years together... never missed the playoffs. What more can you say?

I know little to nothing about basketball (but a surprising amount about b-ball sneaker) but stockton has always been one of my favfigures - he reminds me of an uncle or something like that, not a ball player

haha the Mailman's hand is bigger than Stockton's entire head!

Last night John Stockton probably played his last game in the NBA, at age 41. Malone's 39. They've played together for their entire careers. By the end they were like an old married couple, they could just SENSE where the other was on the court—it almost wasn't fair, this ESP they'd developed. Anyway I think these two pictures sum up what people like to feel about these two guys, that there was a tender quality to their act. Maybe people can post about other classic long-lived duos from other sports that have this "touching" quality to them? Or just any stories you know about these two - for instance, in all that time, did Johnny Stockton ever get a nickname??

...and both had the misfortune of being around at the same time that The Master Of Time And Space Immemorial, Jordan, was single handedly preventing anyone from winning a championship. And that 8-year span was bracteted by two Laker Dynasties and a mean, mean Celtics team.

I always liked this pair. From what I read here, it sounds as though Malone is going to keep playing, yes? Is he going to get decent service without Stockton's passing?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ESPN.com is saying that it's official that Stockton is retiring.

Yeah Martin, Malone has said he's gonna play for another couple years... he wants to pass Kareem for the all-time scoring title. I think he might wind up with the Mavericks, especially if they don't go to far this year.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 2 May 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah he'll probably play another year or two but he's probably going to try and see what he can get from another team. Every big man needs a good guard to dish it to em, I mean if he hooked up with Bibby or Kidd or somebody he might still have a shot at a ring. Van Exel might be a good fit. But he'll always be remembered with Stockton.

I hate them both. I don't care. I hate them both.

I always think of Stockton when someone anywhere mentions Gonzaga College (his alma mater). I'll happily salute them.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 2 May 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The best thing was their team name. Utah, the jazz state. (Yeah, I know the history.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Mullin is my favorite player. Run TMC!
