did you ever used to use 'skill' in conversation. eg as an ejaculation (hohoho) - 'skill!', or maybe an adjective/predicate - 'that is skill'??
is there a case for reintroducing early 90's slang? esp. 'rad' and 'awesome'?

IMO: absolutely

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

is that a Massachusetts thing?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

not since school and it was used perjoratively

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Early '90s? "Skill", in SW London at least, was around mid-eighties, and died out soon after, as far as I can remember.

I'm still amazed that "cool" has lasted. I also still say "wicked!" without irony. Ah, 1985, how I miss you.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ditto for "Wizard!!!" I think that sounds hillarious. Anyone who's ever used that in a sincere way has my love.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember saying "skill" in the 1970s so am either cooler or older than youse.

"You got Scalectrix for Xmas???? SKILL!"

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember 'skill!' being used as a kid, definitely not beyond the late 80s tho

so what are the kids saying nowadays in the playground? 'messy!' or something?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard "skill!" used in such a way. All through high school me & my peeps said "shaft!" like:

*guy gets slapped by his girlfriend while we watch* "Aw SHAFT!!!"

*guy gets rejected by girl* "Dude, bummah, you sure got the shaft!"

etc.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU RIGHT MESSY BOY GET ME

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah maybe it was earlier. to me 88 = 92.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, Alan better get here quick with his benny thing or I tell it for him.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 2 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

we use "hammmered" and "cocked" here in Mass.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Im so glad "Golden" and "Fly" and "Solid" have died, I HATED those words.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember 'Skill', I'm starting to feel all wierd thinking about it.

did anyone ever say 'sorted pie', or was this something i dreamt?

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

'Dope' stuck around for quite awhile, dinnit? But then it got replaced by tight, right? Are the kids still saying 'tight'?

buttch (Oops), Friday, 2 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I still say grody and awesome. I also say dude a lot. arrgggg.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I call females 'dude'. Please don't hate me.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

so what are the kids saying nowadays in the playground? 'messy!' or something?

According to my sister they say "gravy"! As in, "That is so gravy!".

Chriddof (Chriddof), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That's ok. I use dude as an exclamation at the beginning of a sentence as well as calling people that.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks to Lenny Henry we had a few idiots saying 'Crucial!' and 'Sponditious' for a short while in 1987...

other terms at my school:

skank (to ditch a friend leaving them alone, esp. in favour of someone else)

tax (to steal something from someone else e.g. 'i taxed Vinnie's lunch money earlier, after P.E. I'm gonna tax his trainers too'

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

At my middle school, if someone did something that was considered to be really awful and horrible, then we would call that behaviour "bastardish".

Chriddof (Chriddof), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

tax (to steal something from someone else e.g. 'i taxed Vinnie's lunch money earlier, after P.E. I'm gonna tax his trainers too'

Havent heard that since License To Ill.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

'i taxed Vinnie's lunch money earlier, after P.E. I'm gonna tax his trainers too'
Havent heard that since License To Ill.

now you mention it, it DOES sound like an MCA lyric :)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What ya chatting about? He got cussed down. Chief. Skill!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually use the following in conversation all the farking time: solid (spoken only in basso profundo), tight (usually pronounced "taaaaaaaeeeeeeeeeet"), shweet, dude (almost the most versatile word in the english language - if I could just figure out how to use it as a verb), totally (as an exclamation), and even, um, taplow (a Method Man style exclamation, something cool happens, yell "TAPLOW!!!"). And the sentence "_____ has achieve boo-yah".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"...achieved..."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

in primary school we used to make up slang in the hope it would catch on... the only one i can remember is 'ex!' which was boringly an abbreviation of excellent. use of 'ace' was prohibited by the Ban The 80s Club

minna (minna), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

NZA: ditto xcept I use "BALAOW!!!" (rhymes with cow)

buttch (Oops), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

bingo

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

we had to make ourselves remember to use 'ex' all the time too, it just wasn't going to happen

minna (minna), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

After the 1984 'Star' Hits British Slang Guide my friends and I abandoned:

Bummah-fuh-yuh-HUH? = something bad has happened to the person being addressed.

Queerbait = delivered in high, rapid, squeaky voice to our friend Jay, who *so* was.

In the fashion industry: 'fierce!' you or it is very good, or somehow exhilirating. Delivered in lispy voice, means the same but the thing described is also very camp.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

gaylord! we used that one all the time.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I use less and less slang in conversation these days... I think I still use cool a lot, and maybe dope to express approval witha bit of irony.
My neologism: I use the word widdly to describe those moments when I am hyper and delirous from having spent too much time working without sufficient sleep. The feeling is exhausted x overtired x anxious x sugar-high (there are chocolate bars next to the register of my second job, so sugar plays a large role). I know I am widdly when cigarettes have no effect. Also, I only use the word widdly when I am widdly. I am too embarassed normally. It is a dumb word.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 2 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

John Hughes tried to foist "Platinum!" on the American youth culture in Sixteen Candles, with no success. There was another massive slang-introduction-attempt failure in Pretty in Pink but I can't even remember it now.

Aaron A., Friday, 2 May 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

my eighth-grade friend Sam used "fresh" so much that he told us to hit him on the arm as hard as we could everyt ime we heard him say it!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

oh snap

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 2 May 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Mad skill.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"rad" will never die, f3wlz.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I am old and English. It was all "Jolly good show, old chap" in my day.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ambrose, I love this kind of thread!

Also,

Slang R.I.P.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the faux slang of Heathers! It was very.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What's yr damage, Noodles?

buttch (Oops), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me that I use 'dude' way too much, I actually occasionally still say "how very," and nick - GET OUTTA MY HEAD! (I never have actually yelled taplow at anything, but I may yet).

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck me gently with a chainsaw, Noodles.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

WhatEVERRRRRR...

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

did you eat a brain tumour for breakfast Carey?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What is so sad about that is that the actress Kim Walker that said that line actually did die of a brain tumor of sorts.

Ich Luge bullets!

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You're such a pillow case!

Aaron A., Friday, 2 May 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Casual.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You're such a pillowcase.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate when that happens.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Now no one is going to let you play their reindeer games Luna.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Grow up. You think I'm going to drink that piss just because you call me chicken? Just hand me the cup, jerk.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

eskimo

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Corn Nuts!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah man, there's barely a day passes that does not involve me proclaiming something as being skillz. Or occasionally well skillzy. Dead skillz every so often.

And wicked, or, as I spell it, wikkid, frequently gets an airing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw "that's wac" sometimes

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

it's from the phrase "skillz to pay the billz"

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)
