What did you do? Whats the common denominator in good nights out? Anyone agree that it has to be some random night out for it to become amazing, and thats why nights like New Years Eve are crap? So what makes a good night? What about those serious conversations you have as you all start to get sleepy and more drunk?

New Year's Eve (or other holidays) are not necessarily crap! I've had plenty of good holidays. The only reason why there's a high chance that a holiday won't live up to expectations is A) the expectations are always elevated for holidays in a way that random nights do not have to live up to B) too many other people in the world are also out trying to have an amazing, unforgettable night. But despite this you can still have a kicking time on a holiday. Regardless, most of my nights are good nights out, I can't remember the last time I went out and ended up having a truly bad time. A good night is made by good company (either familiar or strangers) and good stuff to do and a good story. The last brilliant night out I had we didn't even go out, I apparently passed out in the middle of getting changed to go out, and I'm really damned sore from falling on the coffee table, but besides that it was great, we partied up on the roof and then downstairs and it was pretty good. Except for the soreness and the bruises, that sucked ass. Then we woke up at 6am, realized we hadn't eaten, and went to the diner, I had chicken souvlaki, which makes ANY night a good night.

*munch munch* Num, I like the sound of that. Take me to a good place that serves such stuff when I'm there next.

Last good night was two nights ago -- without going into detail (those who know, know), the *day* itself sucked royally. But that night my friends Chris, Chels and Karen all provided good cheer and company when I needed it. :-)

JEL goes out - SHOCK!

This July, I went to see the Beach Boys and Status Quo in Hyde Park. Well, it was Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and some newbies. They sang all the classics well. Dedicated God Only Knows to Carl Wilson, only a few people clapped (shame). Mike took a few pot shots at Brian wilson. But it was kinda cool.

During the interval we moved to the back of the concert area, and took the mickey out of Quo fans, and this one guy with a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt wobbling all over the place as he carried drinks "dude, I got the buds in"...

Status Quo played the same song over and over (the Wanderer), it seemed. But it was a blast shouting along..."Rockin' all over the world"...

And another thing...they had outside urinals. I never have seen these before.

This weekend was a good friend's brother's bachelor party. The brother lives in Boston but he came down to NYC to be with his us, and so he wouldn't have to go home at 10:30. We 1) saw his brother, my friend Mike, play in a rock show for a very enthusiastic crowd at Arlene Grocery; 2) went to Heveli, one of the best Indian joints in the city; 3) moved on to the no-frills Baby Doll Lounge and listened to topp hitz like "where the party at" "bye bye bye" and "peaches and cream" (oh, and there were strippers there); 4) went to Tom's hotel room for further humiliation - we took pictures of him reading aloud from an incest fiction magazine called "Family Tales".

The convo in the taxi home with friend Matt was suprisingly involved yet concise. I think we had basically unravelled why men go to strip clubs but we've now of course forgotten.

I don't have nights out. I'm boring and bored.

maria, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No you're not. Not here, at least. Well, maybe you're bored, I don't know...

Arthur, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria, weren't you the one who started the thread about boredom and how your noggin should be enough. :)

6 a.m. souvlaki = classic NYC.

(6 a.m. cheesesteak = classic Philly.)

I honestly can't remember the last great night out I had. It's been a looooooooooooooong time. Most of my drunken adventures have involved some sort of abject depression by the end of the night. (Then again, maybe drunken, lovesick depression does = classic.)

This would have been on Saturday. Birthday party for the female half of Noble and Webster (artists). I gave her a Crackerjack ring which had 'the dirt of luck xxx' inscribed on it and an earth-pattern bath bomb thing from Lush to wash off the dirt of luck. Lavish drink/food setup and I'd made up my mind to get drunk (usually I am the one not getting drunk because I have to do lookout for lushish friends). Vodka + cranberry = pished. They'd laid on a DJ who played allsorts and one of my friends (Arthur, if you are LA art phag you probably know this guy) brought some people from Kreidler along. I managed not to beconme too paralytic and piloted myself home at about 3am.

The next day...total write-off.

suzy, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh, very borderline LA art phag. Who is he?

Arthur, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria, you are not boring.

I forgot to tell about my best night, which was on saturday. My friend Katharine and I went to a very fancy black tie function at the DPAG and we were dressed up very beautifully. Katharine of course was wearing red, and I was of course dressed in black. I had some white lilies in my hair. We got photographed by reporters and were given business cards left, right and centre. we also ate some fancy snacks.

After that we went to a "P" party. Katharine was a Planetarium and I was Pi. Nobody understood my costume though, because they were soccer louts. We drank some beer and danced a lot.

After that I went to Fuel and Abalone and Bath St with this mad girl called Victoria. She made me skip a lot.

The last time I was out was to see Radiohead on Aug. 1 in Chicago. Yeah, that was a good night.

Melissa W, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what is a coke ad type answer?

rainy, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i believe Senor Fitzgerald means that atrocious Coke advert currently making the rounds featuring those four young hipsters on the subway straight from urban outfitters, with the one's voiceover talking about how it was their "best night ever."

jess, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

phew, I panicked for a moment that I might have unwittingly given a coke ad type answer.

rainy, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate that ad. As if its so fucking romantic to be trapped in a subway car without AC.

The last cool night out for me would have been seeing Conor of Bright Eyes play an acoustic solo set. The audience was completely silent. It was tres cool. And all y'all Bright Eyes haters can bite me.

bnw, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*munch* Ew. BNW, you don't taste so good, would you find soaking in some marinade?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't go out much but the last time I went out that was good was a few wks ago, the CM Ensemble were playing & I went there, then there was a party at Matt Middleton's & I went there, then when Matt wanted to go to bed I took all the people that were still at the party in my van & we drove round aimlessly in the van smoking pot. People kept making lots of jokes & stuff & I felt like everybody liked me.

duane, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

about a month ago. my band played a gig and we played really well, and we had a really on-to-it sound guy and lots of people danced to our music. that was very exhilarating (sp.). i was so buzzed out from playing that i didn't even mind that i was doing doorsales for the rest of the evening. only had a couple of pints.

another bonus about that night was that i beat two people at their own game. that was very satisfying.

di, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah that fuckin coke ads the one. I thought to myself "i was gonna miss these guys". The best night of his life and he was drinking coke after almost missing the train home. And all his mates fell asleep. What a bunch of dullards. (if they were real) and then the horrible jingle comes in and says "life tastes good". Life tastes good?? That sounds like something from a film where one corporation runs the world or something and they stick on ads to keep the plebs happy.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got home at 6am last night. It was a pretty brilliant night but not as good as that would imply. I'm now downing the coffee. I have to take a shower.

Ally, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got in at 3 or so, cos I have to go out tonight aswell. I prefer to down the orange juice when I'm hungover. Still I cant imagine coming in to work sober, the day would drag so much.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the way the Coke ad kid reclons he's going to miss those guysis a mutual thing when - on his last night in the city - they all fall asleep in his company when he sup a bottle o'the Real Thing.

Magnent subtext. Coke is for losers.

BTW Saturday was cool, cheers to everyone who made it.

one month passes...
So I've had a fucked up week. You may have read about my mini-drama on what was, in hindsight a poorly titled thread "Feel Happy for Ronan". So yesterday at the last minute I changed my mind and decided to go out, to the Kitchen like I always do with Stephen. So we went. I have to say it was an unbelievable night. I went there feeling miserable and left feeling er....alot less miserable anyway. Everything was perfect at just the time when I needed it. The music was absolutely amazing. It would have been the best night I've had in the Kitchen any other week, but this week it managed to be like therapy or something. Yeah so whatever might fuckin happen with this whole girl thing, I'll live. Obvious to all of you, but not to me so much. It was fun. I'm not self involved, really.

Ronan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
i was going to start a thread on Noble and Webster but did a search and the results were all suzy threads. anyways, i saw a short segment on these two on public television and plan on heading to the exhibit.
