Help me work up the courage to call a boy back

So I'm a wimp- I missed a phone call from a guy who I really like earlier, and he left me a "Hi, call me back when you get in" 15 second message. I do kind of want to talk to him, but I've yet to work up the courage to call him back. We haven't been out on any dates, but I think that if I call him he might ask me out- I suck at all this. It's worse than middle school! I'm afraid I'm going to sound like a complete dork if I call him: "Uhh... hi. It's lyra. You called me. ummmmmm..."

Should I: (a) work up the courage somehow, and hope that I don't sound too much like an idiot (b) send him an email tomorrow morning saying "hi, I'm sorry I missed your call, how was yr weekend?" or (c) panic completely? I think I'm leaning dangerously towards c. :-(

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 5 May 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus. Call the shit out of that motherfucker already. No slacking allowed! Email is for sissies!!!

Millar (Millar), Monday, 5 May 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I'm too giddy already, which is why I'm panicking! He's too cute- everytime I get close to dialing, I think "oh god, I'm going to mess this up, I can't believe he called me!"

lyra (lyra), Monday, 5 May 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, and now I'm laughing at Millar's post too much to call. ;-)

lyra (lyra), Monday, 5 May 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

turn that laughter into calling power!

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 5 May 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I called him!!! We're meeting for coffee in a few days!! Ok, not a real date, but close enough. ;-)

lyra (lyra), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yay! the power of positive thinking.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

you must thank ilx in the liner notes to the album of beautiful music you make together

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

15 seconds is a pretty long time

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah! (Um, but is this a bad time to ask about the Coast Guard guy?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

he called you first! i mean, if that isn't an indication he likes you!

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 5 May 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless she works in a call centre!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 5 May 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope he is nice, this boy, and that you have a good time. If he is unkind, leave quickly, before you become tangled.

One minute we're young, the next, not so young.

estela, Monday, 5 May 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you going to wear??

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 5 May 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well done, Lyra! Best of luck!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 5 May 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"not a real date" my eye. all dating is retrospective. if you end up kissing or making out or back at someone's place, it was retroactively a date (or series of dates leading up to said activities). if you didn't, it's not a date. period.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 5 May 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, but is this a bad time to ask about the Coast Guard guy?
Coastie & I had a nasty breakup in early April. :-(

What are you going to wear??
Since I still maintain this NOT A REAL DATE (despite Matos's retroactive definitions ;-) ), probably just dark jeans + white tshirt + red sneakers. Aw, and he sent me a "nice talking to you last night" email this afternoon!

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos speaks truth, one of many. He is a wise man who should be listened to (esp. when he's telling stories about his mom's ex-boyfriends - they're hilarious!).

hstencil, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Real dates suxor.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What the fuck are you talking about, Mary? Real dates rule, as does "just going for coffee."

Anyway, hooray for lyra! It sounds like it will be fun.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Just going for coffee" is a date disguised as a casual get together.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Just going for coffee" should be slang for sloppy anal sex.

(Sorry, just thinking out loud, ignore me.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

that would put a fantastic spin on my mid-morning pursuits

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos is indeed a wise, wonderful guy- he also was kind enough to rescue me from spilling clam chowder all over myself a few minutes after I met him at the Boston Terrastock FAP.

Heh, and this is just going to feed Mr. Perry: My friend (a guy) claims that "the girl has it easy- she just has to show up! you should just tell him that you haven't eaten after you've had a cup of coffee, and say 'sooo... what are you doing after this?' and he should ask you if you want to go eat!"

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

d'oh, it ate my brackets!

< < <now waiting patiently.... > > >

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly, the only thing I can think of is:

"Would you like to go eat?" = "Would you mind fitting both of my balls in your mouth while I drip honey on my dick?"

This is not funny. It is crass. And hella fun. Did I say that out loud?

(I keep mistyping "loud" as "load". SHOCKER.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

You're missing the sheer genius of the first sentence! ;-)

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan has the beat of romance in his heart and the pulsing and throbbing of something else in areas I won't mention.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I can't believe that first sentence got past me. That's a gallant guy, I gotta say.
