A little project for me. I want you lot to name a representative rawk track from each the last 50 years. I will listen to it and report back. Hopefully this will help overcome some of my suspicions about music with guitars.

Fire away.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"rawk"?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

we should just post the tracklists to the soundbombing comps.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

1953: Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog
1954: Bill Haley and the Comets - Rock Around the Clock
1955: Little Richard - Tutti Frutti / Chuck Berry - Maybelline (tie)

That should start you off.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopefully this will help overcome some of my suspicions about music with guitars.

Guitars or GEETARS?

I mean if you were going to start anywhere, why not Segovia? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

guitars represent the rawk idiom. I quite like Segovia, Django Rhienhart, Jao Gilberto and many guitar exponents.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

please do this.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

To start it off and fuck up the whole thesis, I nominate Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston (he was the named vocalist, but written, produced and performed by Ike Turner and his band) from 1950.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

what music with guitars have you heard ed?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry in a rock context (you must have heard something right?)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard loads and I like lots, but I am less drawn to rock than other styles of music.

(BTW it doesn't have to be in order)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm (2001) is pretty much all you need.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

1969: LED ZEPPELIN II
1972: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracks rather than records please.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok. Zep's track Living Loving Maid.
Bowie - Moonage Daydream.

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has not caught the imagination like I thought it would. 6 Tunes only.

So far I've got big Mama thornton. I could do with more stuff like that, she can SING

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

''I've heard loads and I like lots, but I am less drawn to rock than other styles of music.''

what things have you heard that you do like? what hasn't drawn you?

its all a bit vague.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

1961: "Surfin' Bird," The Trashmen
2001: "U.G.L.Y.," Daphne and Celeste

The rest is just worth a footnote really.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Bleeps and squelch rule, guitars suck.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not asking for tracks to suit me. I'm asking for your representative tracks.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Justyn owns this thread :)

You need a Nirvana song in there, jel. And I think a different smashing pumpkins track. But good work!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I expect a 10,000 word essay by this time tomorrow :)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's a different Pumpkins song, then I'd go for Muzzle.

1989 (altern-rock style) - Nirvana - Negative Creep

oh and Mudhoney's "Good Enough" (199?)

1969 - The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to get hold of Leningrad cowboys versions of as many of these as possible. Everything sounds better with a choir and an uhm-pah beat.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

jel, would you like my dissertation, you can have it if you like. I just finished it by the way.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

just thought of this since nobody's included this year yet.

1977 - Iggy Pop "The Passenger"

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

1972 - Bowie - Moonage Daydream (tick)

Its crazy I've never heard anything apart from the big Bowie singles.

I'm finding it really difficult to write about these these tunes, I find it difficult writing about music anyway but I guess I'm interested in the list above all. Not much British stuff has been but forward so far, no Sabbath, no Def Leppard, no Queen, no Cream, no Who, no Beatles, no Kinks

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

1979 - Van Halen -Dance The Night Away

That was lame, dull major thirds all the way through. Made me feel used and manipulated like a trance anthem does. Piss poor rythmn. Its pinced some south african guitar styles but lacks the sense of fun.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, listen to my choices.

Also, Sabbath = "Supernaut" ('72), Who = "Won't Get Fooled Again" ('71), Lep = "Photograph" ('83), Queen = "Dragon Attack" ('80), Cream = "SWABLR" ('67), Beatles = "She Said She Said" ('66), Kinks = "Tired of Waiting For You" ('65)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I can actually pull Won't get fooled again and Dragon attack out of my collection. They're in that box, over there.

I'm getting tracks as fast as I can.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

1975 - Kiss - Detroit Rock City

Better, but lacking sonic depth, but that could be due to the very revealing headphones I'm using. I'll crank it out on the speakers once people in my block have gone to work. Great hook, great rythmn, but the bass drops off through the song.

Second listen with a bit more bass from the EQ, OK that's better, great rythmn driving the track forward. OK I like this one.

(PS trying to regain my writing skills from dissertation hell)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as the Van Halen goes (its on again) I don't think I'm going to get on with any song that goes ooooooooooeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww baby baby.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

1978 - Cheap Trick - Surrender

Again it has that irksome 'anthemic' quality, particularly the middle 8 which has a really cop out pop quality to it. I think its the synths and the middle 8 which let this track down. The beat doesn't drive, its not dragging, it just marks time. That middle 8 just makes it sound like something that belongs over the credits or training sequence of some early 80s sports film, you know one of those films where the kid with spirit trains himself to beat the bullies or make the team or something.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

1972 - The Who - Won't Fooled Again

This one is kind of easy I've always liked this record. The solo section is a bit naff, but it epitomises what a rock record out to be for me. The filter sweeps across the electric piano hook kicks this off in such a great way. The drums aren't far from being a time keeper but a part of the tune in their own right. The bass is inspired and has depth. This has energy, drive and fucking great lyrics. The key section in the middle of the tune before Roger Daltrey's Scream is one of the great moments in music I recon.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

1955 - Little Richard - Tutti Frutti

this is another record that's 'how its meant to sound'. which is interesting because its piano led, which very little rock is. It plays up to my jazz sensibilities having a solid deep rythmn, little richard's hands, bass, drums and a guitar sax, A whole band as a rythmn section for one voice. Everything goes into supporting a strong voice driving the song forward. A real dance track.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Try some of these if you want to off the beaten track (should be readily available as downloads)

1965 The Sorrows - Take A Heart
1966 The Fleur De Lys - Circles
1967 The Living Daylights - Let's Live For Today
1968 The Factory - Path Through A Forest
1969 The Open Mind - Cast A Spell

..and also

1974 Dr.Feelgood - Roxette
1978 The Saints - This Perfect Day

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

1967 - Jimi Hendrix - Third Stone From the Sun

Now This IS a jazz record and don't anyone try and tell me otherwise. The Drumming is Jazz, Jimi's guitar is jazz. It's a great record.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Your next step is to now listen to all of Kate's Spacemen 3 stuff, then. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

1971 - Rolling Stones - Bitch

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

For a week, Ed will listen to Spacemen 3, and I will listen to Diwali Rhtyhms or whatever. Hah! Now that would be an interesting experiment!

kate, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

1976 - Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop

I pulled this one out of Matos' list because I really ought to have heard the ramones by now. Stripped out and reduced to its most basic components. Clipped to a mimimum its still got a richness and fullness.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

See, Kate! It would be good cross-cultural experimentation. :-) Oh Kate, did Chris tell ya how we also saw Sonic last week a couple of times? He's in LA for a bit, and looked and sounded very well all around. :-) Poor Spencer was a bit nervous around him but did not go all gooey. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Nonononono

The trade of for spacemen 3 is nothing but Chain Reaction, Trapez and SND records.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

God Jel has reminded me that I must buy a Foo Fighters album. Mr CD here I come!

Ed with reviewing skills like yours you could write for Q magazine!

(Er)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hate writing about music, and reading about it as well. Its a good experiment though.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Why?? :)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yes Sarah, get the first Foo Fighters album, it's great!

Ed, I can't believe you don't like Surrender, it's like one of the best song of all time! I guarantee that you would like Alice Cooper's "Teenage Lament".

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

1955 - Chuck Berry - Maybellene

This is the direct ancestor of detroit rock city and also in a way the ramones. The snare drum is punk as fuck. It does lack something, though it isn't the lyrics and it may be the dodgy encoding I got.

By the way, detroit rock city has grown on me during the day. It's much better than I first gave it credit. No Kiss before 9:00AM.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The trade of for spacemen 3 is nothing but Chain Reaction, Trapez and SND records.

mmmm...yummy...

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have not forgotten this.

1982 - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - I Love Rock & Roll

BATTLE CRY

(wonder if there's a helium hardcore version of this, if not they're ought to be)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

1972 - Deep Purple - Highway Star

Another road tune, strong but simple rythmn, in fact this track is all rythmn, almost. The solos kind of let it down when they depart too far from the rythmn.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

1968 - Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

Is someone going to explain to me why Jimi Hendrix is classified as Rock and not Jazz.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

realized these guys were missing, so I thought I'd suggest 2

1988 - the pixies - bone machine
1991 - the pixies - subbacultcha

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
1992 - Catherine Wheel - "Black Metallic"
1993 - Catherine Wheel - "Intravenous"
1993 - Swervedriver - "Duel"
