i ask because the $2 drafts at the diner where i have my daily repast are becoming more and more tempting.

There are a couple of places around here that allow for tippling, including one spot that actually brews on site (and it's a pretty damn good set of beers they come up with, actually). So when I wander across from the campus, I do indulge from time to time. Just not regularly, that would affect my ability to post messages. Oh, and work. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

definite classic.

Sam, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yup. At one place I worked it was considered perfectly acceptable to drink four pints on a Friday lunchtime. Needless to say no work got done when everyone got back to the office.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Richard, why did you leave that job? Sounds like HEAVEN.

I have only done it a couple of times, and that was at farewell lunches for cool coworkers.

Dan Perry, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love to drink, but I would never do it on a lunch break. I just would never be able to get back into work mode. Even having one at an office party is pushing it for me; I just don't want to get that loose around my coworkers. I've spent a long time cultivating my "serious" work persona.

Sean, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Once we went out to lunch as a big group, about half the department, to celebrate two people's birthdays. Certain people proceeded to get shitfaced drunk and the event ended with one of them breaking the stem off a wine glass during a "toast" and the rest of us getting the hell out of there asap. One person proceeded to fall asleep in the office. Several others shouted for several hours. None of us actually did any work. Clearly, drinking in the office is no good.

Ally, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This sounds odd but if I'm really hungover I always pop out for a pint, it chases the hangover away until you sleep/go out that night.

Ronan, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh gosh, I couldn't possibly. The one time I did, I was leaving that day so it didn't matter, but I giggled uncontrollably for an hour afterwards and had to go and hide and pretend I was filing medical journals. Hideous. I save my embarrassing antics for after work.

Madchen, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dud

anthony, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My very first day at the advertising job, my new boss took me and the girl I replaced out for a posh restaurant- they ate lobsters (which I can't eat, as I'm allergic to seafood) and between the three of us, we drank about 2 or 3 bottles of wine. I thought "I'm going to like this job..."

Friday afternoon down the pub was an absolute given in the creative department. No actual work got done whatsoever, but some of the best concepts were certainly dreamed up on Friday afternoons.

So... if you have a creative type job or a social type job, absolute classic. If you have a job where you're expected to be functional and capable, forget it.

exile on krumkill rd, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It depends. Drinking when a publisher/curator/PR takes you out to lunch is absolutely de rigeur. But you will be drinking wine or a 'brunch' drink like a Bloody Mary. It takes about two glasses for me to get buzzed so I just have one, unless my host is getting royally pished.

Am I correct in deducing that Americans might be more Puritanical in attitude towards bouze at lunch? Here, especially in the media, etc. it's not nearly as much of a taboo.

suzy, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drinking is for people with no ambition and/or alcoholics. How many friends did I just make? I's just kidding, but drinking at lunch makes me lazy, sleepy and oblivious.

Nude Spock, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't mind going to pubs during in the day time. They are less crowded and the sun often shines through the window, and makes everything dusty and comfortable. You could buy one drink and stay there all afternoon.

jel, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drinking at lunch is a necessity - I've not yet reached the stage of reaching for the bottle when I wake up, but it's the only thing that helps me get through to the evening! While I was sorting out a new building at work recently, we had drinking sessions that started at 2pm and ended at 2am - now THAT's lunchtime drinking :)

ogden, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get through the evening, eh, Ogden? So what happened at the last but one Strange Fruit then?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drinking at lunchtime - not just classic but part of my job. I call them my surgery hours when students can get to see me and sort out their problems whilst suppliying me with beer. Its particularly ironic if their problems are financial.

Its my little way of making the administration more human and approachable.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I peaked early, mister Ricky. Not as badly as last weekend, when I peaked so early (Friday night) I was completely out of commission for SF on Saturday!

ogden, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete I take back everything I ever said about your job.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dud. for me, anyway, i just cannot drink before 8pm. i find it physically impossible, just get really really tired. whether this is at work, or at weekend is irrelevant. as soon as 8pm hits i'm ok, and can start drinking.

gareth, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Personally I can't do it, I'm not that productive after 12:00 as it is, let alone with a couple of gin-tonics/glasses of wine/pints in yr belly. But as an idea I'm all for it.

But what about Drinking at Breakfast, that shit impresses me when I am in Spain. You walk past a cafe and see these neat working types reading their paper, drinking their coffee *with* a glass of cognac. Now that is class. ;)

Omar, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about leaning out of your bed and taking a swig of QC sherry? Is that class?

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One should really pour it into a schooner first.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am definitely going to be drinking tonight. And not in a good way.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I quit drinking altogether seven months ago and my life has improved immeasurably. It wasn't really all that hard either.

Cheers!

dan, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
I love drinking at lunchtime but unfortunately my typing doesnt!

Madam Plinky (Madam Plinky), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

of course you have a drink at lunch, keeps the creative juices flowing

H (Heruy), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, I don't believe we were all posting to this on Sept 11 at 3AM.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Why not, Nick? (Scaled to U.S. Central time they're all Sep. 10th, which means, umm ... the next day everyone forgot about it.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I just meant that we wouldn't be posting at 3 in the morning. I have my ILE settings set to GMT (well, BST) but obv. this hasn't worked with the retrospective stuff.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 3 October 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

it's like the gregorian calendar!! where's our 11 hours gone!!

(my head wants to write gregorian, but my fingahs type gregevian)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 3 October 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

never drink at lunch.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 October 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Greenspun doesn't store times (or at least doesn't offer a way of retrieving them), so all of the imported m,essages have their time set to noon server time (ie Australia), hence 9am. Greenspun operated on EST, so I guess they should be set to that really.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 3 October 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I was out with Andrew L's flatmate (haha that's not how I usually refer to him, obv, but here it is more meaningful) at lunchtime today, and had a beer - I usually don't at lunch because I am sometimes quite dozy enough in the afternoon anyway. I didn't fall asleep once, though, so it was okay. I hope to meet Julio again at lunchtime soon too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 3 October 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

dammit, is there really no way of posting a picture if it is not on the web already?

H (Heruy), Friday, 4 October 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

''I didn't fall asleep once, though, so it was okay. I hope to meet Julio again at lunchtime soon too.''

yeah sure we'll do it sometime next week if you want it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 October 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

yes I drink at lunch. Usually on Fridays, occasionally on other days. 1 or 1.5 pints of bitter. Lots of pubs round here to choose from.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 October 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i drink/smoke weed occasionally on my lunch breaks, usually on days when i have a meeting with my boss in the afternoon. mild intoxication always makes me sort of chatty which my boss mistakes for me being actually interested in my work. everybody wins.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 4 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Next week offers few opportunities. I can't do Monday, I plan on going to lectures on Tuesday and Thursday, I'm in Coventry on Wednesday (these glamorous business trips!), and I think it's odds on that I'll be too busy to take an hour on Friday. We might have to make it the next week.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 October 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fine. we could do an FAP (like you did on totenham court road when i was away) the week after. get some more ppl in if that's possible.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Good plan! How about Friday (I think people are frequently more up for a lunchtime drink then) October 19th?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 October 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah that's good. do you wanna do the thread?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 October 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)
