Cheap Flights

How come other people are always telling me their air fares cost a pound, and mine cost £££££'s?

What am I doing wrong? What should I do instead? And in particular, what is the cheapest flight to Glasgow on Friday 16th May?

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinefox, I sense you may have missed the boat on this. I got a flight for that weekend for £74 - I doubt there's that many cheaper.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What day are you planning on coming back? www.ryanair.co.uk is generally the cheapest, but is expensive if you want to come back on the Sunday - much cheaper to return on Monday.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't mind flying back on the Monday, I reckon you can get a return for 73.74 GBP

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the sites I listed are ones I use in america...your mileage may vary.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

because we all booked weeks ago matey ;)

i found ryanair to be about half the price of easyjet (for getting to glasgow that weekend), even though easyjet are boasting about paying your taxes. also i'm going on the thursday rather than the friday, which prolly helps...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinefox, try also www.priceline.co.uk or www.kelkoo.co.uk or even STA if you are young enough. I have no idea how old you are. I suppose it would be rude to ask.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And look for offers in the Sunday papers. There are many.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh i must look at http://www.southwest.com/ soon

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

On Ryanair, the cheapest flight now available for leaving Friday, returning Sunday is £99, and that's only if you leave London absurdly early in the morning and come back late Sunday evening :(

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

southwest is great, the flight attendents sing songs to you, or at least they used to.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I see that Kelkoo are offering cheap flights from London to Glasgow for £1,075 and up.

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, you can count on me...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

There's always http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/ - how can you go wong? ;)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Or there's the national coach system...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Alternatively, I just looked up the trains, and you can get a Friday-Sunday return for £83.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

On the 23rd Feb, a Ryanair return trip leaving STN Friday pm & returning from PIK on Sunday evening cost £33.66.

Budget airline business strategy/law of supply & demand says that the earlier you book the cheaper it is. As the number of available seats reduces, the price increases.

Sadly Easyjet are not as cheap as they once were (& yet they are still making a loss ...)

Just looked: you could do Easyjet for £70 (v early starts though) & Ryanair for £58.74 (if you left at an insanely early hour on Friday & returned Monday)

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do I find a Chicago to NY ticket for under $50? Is this possible?

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is everyone going to Glasgow on the weekend I'm all alone and stuck at home? Is there something on?

PF, sometimes the prices seem to go down again if you leave it really late, but don't quote me on that.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

PF, someone told me that the prices seem to go down again if you leave it really late, but I can't tell you who.

Does anyone know how to get a really cheap ticket from Peckham Rye to Bethnal Green?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Paying's for suckers. Flying free is where it's at.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 9 May 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

1. fly free

2. don't marry

3. ?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 9 May 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

3. = don't date of course;)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 9 May 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

PJ - some of us will be in London still that weekend.

chris (chris), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll still be about PJM hurrah. I might be looking round RAT SHOPS though. Mmmm ratties.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 9 May 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Rats in the Stow? surely not.

Mind you I did see a huge one last year by Selbourne Walk shopping centre, maybe you could try and befriend him?

chris (chris), Friday, 9 May 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ten months pass...
anyone have any tips for cheap flights between paris and london?

i found one (round trip) for about 110 euro, taxes included, with easy jet. the air france tickets are about 170 euro. ryanair doesn't do this flight.

any other ideas? does 110 seem a bit high given all the talk about cheap flights?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't bother flying, go by Eurostar instead. Cheap airlines fly to stupid nowhere terminals and you spend hours transferring to the centre of town, whereas the train takes you straight there.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And it should only be about £70 for a standard return.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

coach = 33 quid or so, takes 5 hours yes, but it's really rather good

chris (chris), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend is going to see France v England rugby but flying to Paris via Amsterdam because apparently it's cheaper?!?!!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

only 5 chris? i like those odds

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're having a drunken fun trip the coach is good - bouzing and MacDonalds on the ferry etc.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it went incredibly quickly when I went a couple of years ago, it was good and the coaches were not at all full either

chris (chris), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Eurostar tickets are cheaper when purchased in Paris than when purchased in London. It's cheaper to buy a return than a single. Include a saturday in the period for the cheapest tickets and there are discount for under 26s.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Skyscanner is your friend for cheap flights. Though you will be hard pushed to get anything cheaper than the bus, I reckon.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not under 26 unfortunately

but i'll try eurostar. should i just go to the gare du nord or is their some kind of website?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

eurostar.fr

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Bits of this thread were terrific.

the bluefox, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get it, round trip on eurostar is about 175 dollars, while a flight is about 145. i think it's still worth it, but i won't be saving any money.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

also, i am 26, but do you think if i said i was 25 i would get away with it? i mean, will they actually check even if i order my ticket over the web?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

haha just checked it's not any cheaper anyway wtf??

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

175 dollars that's crazy, although actuallywith the exchange rate it's not so crazy. CAn't remember if it is under 26 or 26 and under. You could chance it but they do check your passport although not at the same times as your ticket. IIRC. I might be able to tell you after the weekend.

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ed you are great!!! (ps will you be in london mid-april?)

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know what the cheapest way would be to get from Paris to Krakow?

waxyjax (waxyjax), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Walking. But I guess you didn't mean that.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Air Polonia fly Paris Charles de Gaulle to Katowice but I dunno how cheap that is, check out http://www.airpolonia.com/index.php?lang=en

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Having booked a fair amount of travel this year (for other people)....For whatever reason, I've found that Orbitz has the best fares, but you should check all the sites and then the actual airlines. And try both roundtrips and 3-one ways. And keep trying over the span of a week because prices fluctuate.

Meaning that the only rule is that the more you hunt, the better you'll do. More art than science. blah blah blah.

If you decide on more than 2 destinations you might also want to check with a travel agent... they tend to get better one-way ticket rates.

I _can_ tell you that roundtrips from NYC to London over the holidays are only $415.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Spend over £18 with cd-wow now (www.cd-wow.com) and they give you two free flights from the UK to your choice of eight European cities. You have to stay in a nominated range of hotels, but they seem to be fairly cheap too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Don't laugh, but you could also try using a travel agent. No, really. I haven't used one in 10 years, but I think they still exist.. And they might know where to find the cheapest fares. And if you can do better on the web, just don't take the agent's itinerary & book it yourself.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

wow! (xpost)

youn, Saturday, 6 November 2004 04:51 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the tips guys, i'll look into it! (damn martin if only they extend the offer to elsewhere (i can understand why it's europe only obv)) as my trip involves america and south east asia destinations...

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 6 November 2004 09:49 (twenty years ago)

The best internet fares I find are usually on travelocity.com, but I second the advice above--a travel agent is really invaluable to getting the best rate, especially for multi-destination trips.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 6 November 2004 09:58 (twenty years ago)

I would also recommend ebookers.com. Orbitz doesn't work if you're booking an origin outside the States.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I admit my default service is Ebookers because the two cities I'm living in now (Berlin and Helsinki) have a service. I haven't had a problem with them.

On a related note, anyone have something to say about that Easy Jet "reality" show. It's on air in Finland at the moment (which is probably fine because they no longer have service here). Seems like a rather obvious ad warning you against flying with them, but there's the "any publicity is..." argument to be made. The one time I've flown with them I was a bit unnerved by their "casual" approach to service on the plane. In certain situations, I really crave a little professionalism and fewer jokes.

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

lastminute.com's Air France seems reasonable - £300 including tax and carbon offset (whatever that's worth).

does anyone think this is too high and I should look further?

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

Thank you, your booking with Airline Network has been successful. We wish you an enjoyable trip and suggest that you print this page for your records.

Does anyone have tips on how/where to find a cheap (or at least REASONABLE) last-minute domestic flight? I need to find a decent flight from LA to Indianapolis for early next week, if possible. I tried Kayak and student travel agents (for I am still a student), but nothing under $400, which seems totes ridic.
