I have seen the greatest movie of all time, and it's called Better Off Dead

This movie has:

- a french foreign exchange student who throws lemons at 'no parking' signs, and is molested by a fat kid who constantly snorts nasal spray

- an 8-year-old who has an orgy in his room, and who later builds his own space shuttle

- an animated mutant hamburger that turns into Van Halen

- a pair of asian kids who learned to speak english by watching Howard Cosell and imitate him during drag races

- a climactic ski pole fight between the fat kid and John Cusack

=> it is obviously fantastic. who's seen it?

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 10 May 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(i neglected to mention it includes the line "now why would people want to be throwing away a perfectly good white boy?")

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 10 May 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry, I haven't seen it. I'll leave your nice thread alone now.)

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 10 May 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You have the internet in that cave???

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 10 May 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to dig it out and watch it now!

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 10 May 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"ya look pretty stupid to me"

dave q, Saturday, 10 May 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a funny film. Forgot to mention the black guy who says something like "perfectly good white kid trying to kill himself" when John Cusack jumps into the back of a passing lorry. It's got Booger from the "Revenge of the Nerds" films in it and an animated segment involving dancing hamburgers. Worth watching as it's wacky as fuck.

Calum, Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"He keeps putting his testicles all over me."

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 10 May 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Where's my two dollars?"

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 10 May 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister's favorite film of all time, space and creation. She can probably quote it in her sleep; I'll have to ask her housemates.

"FRANCH toast, FRANCH fries..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 May 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The notion of a book called How to Meet Trashy Women kills me every time.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 10 May 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah Calum, nobody mentioned that line. Nope, not here. No one. (c'mon there were only like 6 posts)(sorry)

oops (Oops), Saturday, 10 May 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Booger snorting snow "This is PURE SNOW!"

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 10 May 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the cheerleader dating the ENTIRE basketball team...and how the players just grunt all the time.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 10 May 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If you love this, you'll need to be renting "One Crazy Summer" as well.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Saturday, 10 May 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"Two dollars! You owe me two dollars!"

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 10 May 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"I know this is awkward, me being a cartoon and all. But do you mind if I take out Beth. Hey hey hey."

rat, Sunday, 11 May 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I lost all respect for John Cusack when he said he didn't understand why people liked this movie so much.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 11 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

! What the flying fuck. I condemn him to a life of doing nothing but remakes and summer stage productions of Pushing Tin...FOREVER.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Sort of like when Christian Slater said that Kuffs was the kind of movie he'd REALLY been trying to make.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

John Cusack is eternally bitter because he was originally cast as BEnder in the breakfast club and got replaced by judd nelson.

Eve, Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't imagine most actors would have an easy time understanding when the public like one of their movies on the it's-so-bad-it's-good principle.

If you love this, you'll need to be renting "One Crazy Summer" as well.

There is more of this genius?!?!?

Dave M. (rotten03), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe that Matos has not seen this! We must alleviate immediately!

hstencil, Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Better Off Dead NJFAP!!

Dave M. (rotten03), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah!

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in. But what about Battle Royale and Xanadu?

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 11 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't imagine most actors would have an easy time understanding when the public like one of their movies on the it's-so-bad-it's-good principle.

But I like it on the so-good-it's-good principle! It's not Showgirls fer chrissake - it's just comic genius.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 11 May 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's make it a triple bill.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 11 May 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

word. we can do it at my eating club, which is five minutes walk from the Princeton Record Exchange (so as to rope in JBR). plus i am leaving in a month and wanted to call a FAP anyways. How about May 23?

Dave M. (rotten03), Sunday, 11 May 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hrm. Maybe. Call a thread for it, see who says they will come? I'd like to.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 11 May 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE STREET VALUE OF THIS MOUNTAIN IS????

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 11 May 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

TWO DOLLARS!!!

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 11 May 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon isnt that line from Meet the Feebles or Bad Taste (one of those guys movies anyway)?

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 11 May 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Never mind a triple bill, we have to have the ILX Film Festival!

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 11 May 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That Van Halen scene is one of the greatest examples of using Rock/Pop music in a film EVAH.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

That is the genius of Savage Steve Holland. His movies are not so-bad-they-are-good. They are just good.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

he also created EEK THE CAT!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"I've been arrested by you, take me in..." (synth plays)

Hilarious, and the South Park episode that I think spoofs it is hilarious too.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OFG! I completely forgot about Eek The Cat! Has that ever been reissued on DVD?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Thursday, 13 May 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It also has that one "now why would anyone want to throw away a perfectly good white boy" line too.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The one movie I can honestly say I've seen over 50 times.

"Listen Lane, I think we should talk. We've been seeing an awful lot of each other lately, and I really think it's in my best interest if I went out with someone more popular, better looking, drives a nicer car."

Evanston Wade (EWW), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

all movies from that period have that line xpost

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

So about Eek the Cat, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Two Dollars!!" is the original "I'm Rick James, bitch!"

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think more people should recite Charles' comments on the mountain though: "I could be at home right now drinking this monster egg nog my brother makes with lighter fluid..."

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"So about Eek the Cat, then. "

Great cartoon! I love how everyone mentions to Eek how his girlfriend is fat and he always goes..."Really?"

So many classic moments on that show.

The Thunder Lizards cartoon was pretty funny too. Especially the caveman with the voice by Curtis Armstrong.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

I just watched this. I was expecting some wise-cracking Ferris Bueller movie but it was so much better :-D

"Better Off Dead" was Savage Steve Holland's debut as a writer/director, at age 25 (!). He then made "One Crazy Summer" (also awesome) and "How I Got Into College" (has its moments), then for some completely unexplainable, one-of-the-great-Hollywood-mysteries-of-all-time, reason - he couldn't get his other movies financed. So he did a lot of commercials, second-unit directing work, and then finally settled into a run of kids' shows (for years he's been the erstwhile-auteur of the HUGE shows your nieces and nephews watch, like "Zoey 101," "Lizzie McGuire," and now the Jonas Bros.' show).

Someone else references it above, but there's a notorious interview with him where he talks about what a prick Cusack was during the making of the movie and afterwards.

Here is said great interview
