stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 May 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey... I think I might have hit on something that it ISN'T easy to come across on the Interweb. I can't find any decent ones of my area.

I did find this totally out of character article, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Gareth should have his own travel show - like those Clive James Postcards travelogs. he could amble around the South of England commenting on the peculiarities of the landscape and gentlefolk.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Here you go Matt, it's good for Londoners, anyway:

erik, Monday, 12 May 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinner hasn't changed much actually...

here's Camden Town, a century ago - looks like the crowds are gathering to see The Pimpernels live and maybe stone some pagans (goths) in the market

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

This was taken pretty much directly outside where my flat now stands.

It's hardly changed.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Blackheath? I refuse to believe that such a place exists. That photo is faked, you and HSA made the place up! It's not on the tube, it does not exist!

kate, Monday, 12 May 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

essex road used to be called lower street, (hence upper st as its counterpart), until about half way up, where it became balls pond rd (whereas today balls pond rd begins further up, at the junction with newington green road and st pauls road, it doesnt dip down into islington anymore)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just down the road from here:
http://www.photolondon.org.uk/assets/gpr/large/ludgate.jpg

Since this photo was taken the King Lud has become a hogshead, now a Hog's Head, we have added a Waterstones on the opposite corner and, er, we've built St Paul's Cathedral (maybe someone had taken it away to clean it that day). Oh and the railway line across Ludgate hill is now the Thameslink and underground (where Kate can find it).

Tim (Tim), Monday, 12 May 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't St Paul's Cathedral actually dead centre in the background of that pic?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it's hidden by another spire

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah! Silly me!

(The other spire is that of St Martin's Without Ludgate which has some very fine Grinling Gibbons wood carving in it, fact fans.)

Tim (Tim), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Saint Sepulchre - Warm, cuddly, caucasian, mature male, GSOH, likes lawn tennis, easy-listening, Celtic football club. Seeking vivacious young Catholic girl for candlelit dinners, romantic walks by the river, nights at the opera and procreative naughtiness. Can travel.

Does that help, j0e?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)
