Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Which begs the question....

IAN WALKER?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

what happened to Tim Flowers? the dearth of decent England keepers is a little scary

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i love how David Moyes is saying Rooney is injured after yesterday - chinny reckon mate...well maybe he is but coincidences like that suck profusely

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Richard Wright injured or has he somehow managed to slip below Ian Walker on the pecking order? Oh, the ignomany!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim Flowers has retired.

Why no Russel Hoult? surely a better bet than Walker?

chris (chris), Monday, 12 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

other English goalkeepers

Richard Wright - Everton
Chris Kirkland - liverpool
Russ Hoult - West Brom
Nicky Weaver - Man City
Matt Murray - Wolves
Stewart Taylor - Arsenal

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Sven picked Walker to prove a point, get back in the premiership and you will be picked. Richard Wright and Russ Hoult - must be pissed off, that Walker is back in the England squad.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Kirkland is injured - back next season

Wright's had a couple of mares lately hasn't he

Nicky Weaver - blown it all

Matt Murray - good shout, he looks useful

Taylor - I'm still not sure about him, Chessie Bob rates him though so he can't be all bad.

chris (chris), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad you mentioned Nicky Weaver, DJM, for comedy value alone.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

joe royle rated him as England's finest, when Man City were in the 2nd Division !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

At least David James has been getting plenty of practice.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i notice that Keegan prefers Carlo Nash as Number 2 @ Man City, Weaver needs a move.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Weaver needs to stop eating pies.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 12 May 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

so does this mean that vs south africa pneville or upson will be left back? and gareth barry is left at home... madness

also where are woodgate and brown? and has ledley king's stock fallen so far? ehiogu's old but still good

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it has dawned on eriksson after turkey that it doesn't matter who you play as long as they can run around headless chickeny and patriotic it's aight

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Matthew Upson? Every morning I wake up and praise the Lord that I'm not English...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Heskey? He sucks so hard be blows out the other side.

Judge Mentalist (Judge Mentalist), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

There was talk of Danny Mills at left back, but he looks to be the only right back there, so that hardly solves the problem. We talk so much of left backs, we seem not to have noticed that we're really no stronger at right back. Wes Brown, who can play anywhere across the back and has been in good form, is a mystifying omission. And hgow many goals has it taken to keep Heskey in the side, and probanly still ahead of Beattie?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Heskey, like Vassell, will get goals for England with surprisingly regularity. Beattie deserves a few games but I doubt he'll make the same impact at international level (tho i cannot explain why)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

my opinion:

walker is a pile of poo, and richard wright is better, even if he's prone to occasional idiocy. kirkland should be england's no.1 when he returns from injury. (what aout hislop as no.3?)

upson is quite good, and it's good to see the all-round excellent john terry in there.

heskey isn't as bad as people make out, but i'd replace him with defoe anyway.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

what do you mean heskey will get goals with surprising regularity?

beattie has shown breathtaking technique at times; he's definitely better than a kevin phillips type story and who knows, a bit of raw league greed might be better than someone pitifully brainwashed with teamplay tactics like heskey

i don't have much time for vassell either. certainly not better than jeffers anyway

Chip Morningstar (bob), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i meant despite the criticism he gets, of which some is perhaps justified, Heskey's record for England is something like 5 goals in his last 20 appearances, which while hardly satisfactory in an ideal scenario, isn't too bad when you consider how many quality strikers over the years have failed to match their club form in an England shirt. same goes for Vassell really, tho he is actually more prolific in terms of game/goal ratio

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mills is the man for left back to be honest. He was good in the World Cup, and Cole is not an England player.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Campbell banned from internationals as well as domestic games?

Actually, for a friendly, there's a disappointing lack of new faces, especially in defence... where's Gareth Barrie?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Wes Brown came off injured in the Everton game. He was waving a crutch around while they were celebrating the trophy, but I think that was for comedy value rather than because he'd been crippled. Either way him and Butt were left out of the England squad because of injuries.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Bloody hell - I spoke too soon.

Brown's actually ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament so he's going to be fucked for the start of the season too.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
Anthony Gardner has just been called up into the England squad to replace Southgate. Anthony Gardner!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

BLIMEY!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's Anthony Gardner?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

only the greatest young defender in England!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So much appears to have happened in the last six months of football.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't they call up 3 or 4 more full backs? We only have six!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

So that's what happened to Jamie Redknapp.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to keep asking these stupid questions, but I'm very out of the loop. When is the next England international anyway?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Saturday I think, a friendly against Denmark.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Sunday at three, there must be a better centre back than Gardner, he's not that good really.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Sutton! He's been playing at centre-half for Celtic on occasion and I believe Sven's been watching him, specifically at the last Old Firm game.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, does Lovenkrands play for Denmark? Sutton can certainly keep him contained pretty well, as Sven must be aware, having watched him doing just that at the last Old Firm game.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I assumed he was there to watch Thompson.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

that squad is a bit light on strikers.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It's sure light on good ones. Apparently some journo asked about Beattie, and Sven said he needed to keep scoring, and the journo pointed out that he had scored more this season than the three selected strikers put together.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know much about this gardner chap. sven could have called up some of the fringe strikers as well. one of matt jansen, defoe or smith maybe.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They've not really forced their way in this season so far though, surely?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

defoe should be in every england squad!

fair point, but i would have thought that he'd replace beattie with someone else if he dropped him. those 3 goalkeepers are not so good. whither kirkland? is he fit at the moment?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

He's not been playing for Liverpool, so again no chance to force his way in. I think he could manage with just 4 full backs, personally, rather than 6.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The general consensus in the papers I read was that Sven was watching both Sutton and Thompson. Given that Thompson went off injured having contributed bugger all to the match, I would have thought he couldn't have failed to notice that Sutton gave a pretty good impression of a regular centre half.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like Seaman has had his chips then. I'd love to report that he really deserves to be England's number one, but I can't.

James Beattie c/d? I have been saying for some time that last season was as freakish as Kevin Phillips' glorious year for Snnlnnd. I don't reckon he's got the class. May he prove me wrong...

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i think robinson is the most solid england goalie, but playing behind such a wonky defence is killing his confidence. he looks despondent in every game these days.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Great to see Glen Johnson in the England squad. West Ham get some more money if he gets on. Bless his little afro.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree about Robinson - I think he might need a move. I was surprised the mooted Arsenal one fell through. Yes, Johnson has earnt his place. Beattie is scoring well and looking good this season too. I'd have doubts about his overall class at the highest level too, except we keep getting Heskey playing for England so it seems silly to raise such questions.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i cannot believe anyone is still picking heskey for anything
i mean,i know he's been a bit better than usual in recent months but still,no way he should be in the squad instead of beattie

incidentally, isn't glen johnson the most seventies looking footballer imaginable?

robin (robin), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Arsenal could have afforded to buy Robinson. Even given Leeds' well-documented financial problems they'd still have realised he was the most important member of the squad, they'd need another high-quality replacement and therefore would've hiked the price up. Bear in mind the Arse got Lehmann (who, unlike Robinson is proven at top level) for a pittance.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

But Leeds were ready to sell him to Villa dirt cheap!

In the pub on Saturday some ILXer (can't remember who) thought Glen Johnson looked like he was in the Commodores. It is true. He also reminds me a bit of Kobe Bryant, for some reason, but I suspect I'm alone in that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

heskey will never be international class, he scrapes through as okish class. His miss against MUFC must surely show he will never make the grade. I'm no fan of Vasell (sp) but if they swapped roles at club level Owen would be singing Darius' contribution to the rafters & forget heskey in an instance.
