I just received a phone call from my wife. Apparently a jet flew into one the towers of the World Trade Center in New York shortly before 9:00 AM. As she was telling me about this, another jet crashed into the other tower.

WHAT THE FUCK???? I have friends who work there! This is completely FUCKED UP.

Preliminary reports are saying that at least one of the planes was hijacked. They're showing crash footage of the second crash on just about every TV channel.

I'm too shocked to really think about what actually happened.

Supposedly, both planes were hijacked passenger airliners. One United Airlines, one American Airlines - the American Airline plane was en route from Boston to LA. I guess it's been declared a terrorist attack. Both CNN.com and MSNBC.com are totally inaccessible due to (I'm guessing) horrific amounts of traffic.

And they're going to play and replay the footage of that 2nd crash until people start rioting.

This might be a weird thing to publically post, but I don't have his work email anymore after my Great Computer Crash of 2001 demolished my hard drive - um, did Fred Solinger make it to work today? All the Path trains from NJ to downtown NY go thru the WTC. And he works in downtown NY.

I am completely freaked out right now, I know people down there. It makes the huge ass leak in my ghetto office look good...

Aircraft crashes near Pentagon, believed terrorism
WASHINGTON, Sept 11 (Reuters) - An aircraft crashed next to the Pentagon on Tuesday, setting off a huge explosion, throwing people off their feet inside the building and setting off a massive fire, U.S. officials and eyewitnesses said.
One eyewitness said the plane appeared to be an airliner.
"It appears it was a plane that hit the Pentagon, " a U.S. official said. Officials said an airliner appeared to have crashed near the helicopter landing site outside the huge building, which is the headquarters of the U.S. military and the office of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
Lisa Burgess, a reporter for the Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, said she was walking in a corridor near the blast site and was thrown to the ground by the force of the blast. Sirens wailed as the whole building was evacuated. REUTERS

American Airlines plane crashed into Trade Center
CHICAGO, Sept 11 (Reuters) - One of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center in New York was American Airlines' Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles, said Lori Bassani, spokesperson for American's flight attendants union.
Bassani, who said she was in a meeting with American officials in Fort Worth, Texas, American's headquarters, said if full, the flight on the Boeing 767 would carry 158 passengers. That would include two pilots and nine or 10 flight attendants, she said.
She said she did not know how many people were on board.

Plane crash outside Pittsburgh. I can hear jets from here in westchester. My little brother works in the World Trade Center. He was just waking up to head there when it happened. Thank God, he is okay. Appreciate the news updates here, because I can't get much online. Also phone line keeps getting knocked out, and local tv channels wiped out.

Chicago is not "evacuated". We were told to stay calm and go about our business, but we're allowed to watch tv from here. There are only so many times you can watch a plane going into a building, though. The Sears Tower and federal buildings have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, but the L is running and the mayor is saying "business as usual". I got out of the subway, and I and everyone else looked up at the Sears to make sure it's still there.

I know so many people in NY, both personally and through business, and I'm not sure which ones work in the World Trade.

No, there were TWO planes going towards DC. The 1st crashed into a helliport on the site of the Pentagon. The 2nd plane was supposedly headed towards DC, and being chased by F-16s. Reports of that plane's existance are dubious, though.

As you know, CNN, ABC, and all the other "biggie" websites are down right now, so if you want news online, your best bets are local news websites, international news websites (esp. in foreign languages if you can read them), local radio station websites, and news mirror sites.

If you can get into ANY radio station's live broadcast (it doesn't have to be a news broadcast) connection, you can try changing the url within the broadcast to a bigger news radio channel. (For instance, logging into a local college radio channel and then changing the URL within RealPlayer to a larger news channel.) Good luck. Take care. United Airlines 93 (not sure of destination, confirmed by united.com)
At least one American Airlines flight (can't find flight #, but confirmed 164 people were lost)

There's a fourth flight, but I can't track down the info for it.

My uncle is leader of the opposition party here, Michael Noonan. He just rang me there. The information being given in what he told me were official circles is that there were 5 planes taken and not all are accounted for. There is no serious consideration anywhere that Bin Laden was responsible for this, or at least that he was the main orchestrator. The popular theory is that a country has backed a terrorist group heavily, Iraq obviously was suggested but to be honest everyone is a little mystified.
