Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

is that the dude from Wuthering Heights?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

or Grand Moff Tarkin?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

They're gonna say "Specimen?" COol!

Sarah Mclusky (coco), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, do you mind if I pay in...specimen, huh huh

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I want Andrew Jackson hair.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That amusement park/haight street font on the right side is pure ass.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh, that eagle is tickling AJ's ear with an olive branch. Kinky.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I can think of about 200 million things that needed attention and the $20 bill was not one of them.

Eve, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe they actually made Jackson's head bigger. He is now the most visible president ever. This, the man who trashed the White House in a wild post-inaugural orgy of liquor and women. There's hope for us all.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

as presidents go andrew jackson's the hottest, i swear that's just a bad picture!

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's one of the redesigned 20's that didn't make the final cut:

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Virtual tour of the new $20.

There are all these little yellow "20"s on the back of it. I suspect that will also look horrible.

I'm not convinced that removing the ovals was a good idea, though it's not a very surprising one.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa! The color-shifting ink and watermark are pretty OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man...it wasn't that bad, but the yellow 20s are so cheesy.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This, the man who trashed the White House in a wild post-inaugural orgy of liquor and women.

According to my high school U.S. history teacher, that party also involved a giant cheeseball being rolled through the White House door. Which makes Jackson the best president ever!

(oh wait except for the whole Trail of Tears and countless other atrocities)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It galls me how the seal of the US treasury is now a 'Symbol of Freedom'.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Best thing about the new bill: there's plenty to keep stoners occupied for hours!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

not if they spend the $20 on weed, Aaron!

hstencil, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"...and it's green too... no wait... yellow... red... whoooooaaaaa..."

chester (synkro), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

not if they spend the $20 on weed, Aaron!

Oh yeah... it's a fucking paradox dude!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

American money is still so oldschool, especially colours wise.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

he looks like bea arthur on maude.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

At least they don't say "Alien sex fiend"

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just like the fact that the redesigned bill had already become so susceptible to counterfeit that they've had to redesign AGAIN this soon. Can paper money keep up with technology? Probably not at this rate.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the little 20s on the back look like bees attacking the white house!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's clearly a message to an alien invader (cf the Queen Bee, a JLA villain).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

safer, smarter, more secure

what do they mean by smarter exactly? is there microchips in it? or fingerprinting devices? what? tell me!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It took some determined Russians all of 6-8 months to replicate the old bill redesign. I'll give 'em another month on this one.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

wonder if coke tastes better when huffed through a new twenty?

j.a.e., Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

They missed a golden opportunity.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe now the Russians will go after the Euro instead (worth $1.15 as of today I think)

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup. Holding at 1.1499.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Today is Bea Arthur's birthday.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(Euro rises to 1.4899 on the dollar.)

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there a lot of counterfeits going around right now? I've noticed a lot of merchants, taxi drivers, etc. taking a really close look at twenties lately. Or maybe I just look like a counterfeiter.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe it's just where you spend 'em. Bartenders and drug dealers are always using the little highlighter test.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole plan is that these bills will get redesigned every few years. It's not like "oh shit, counterfeiters, better redesign the bills!", it's a plan of redesigning them regularly anyway to minimize the impact of counterfeiters. I mean, why spend all that effort coming up with a fake dollar if it's going to change in a few years anyway?

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, why spend all that effort coming up with a fake dollar if it's going to change in a few years anyway?

Er, because you need the money?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you americans need more colourful money

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

That ain't YOUR money, son of the sceptred isle.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't counterfeiters just copy the old, easier-to-copy bills that are still legal?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

never said it was.

The 500 Euro note, carried by discerning drug runners in suitcases everywhere.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

never said it was.

I tease, sir. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like it to be. I want a roll of ?500 notes in my pocket. Purple money rocks.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What's this about highliters and money, That Girl?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny is OTM, i mean it is legal tender for all debts public and private, even if it was printed up in 1910

teeny, you and s. trife would like Dutch money, it has REAL BEES!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You could have ten dollar Canadian bills if its purple you desire.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

?500 rocks all over you CAN$10

Is that really true does money never cease to be legal tender in the US. The Charles dickens £10 will cease to be legal tender this summer having be replaced by charles darwin. (NB the Royal mint likes people with wispy beards for its notes because they are harder to forge, take note americans choose beardy presidents for you notes)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a joke about closeted gay presidents to be made there but i can't think of any.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't you ever handed over a big bill and had them make a little mark on it with a highlighter and inspect it? I"m not sure what they're looking for but luckily they've always been satisfied with my bills.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I didn't know that money stopped being legal tender in other countries. What a bother. What do they do, send out public service announcements to make sure you turn it in? How many people get peeved because they miss the deadline? Do tell.

(also, amazingly --or maybe not so amazingly-- this may be the first time I've been OTM. Which is great, to be OTM about M.)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

notice how the "USA TWENTY" water mark on the right hand side of the bill is in the same font as the cover of "Black Sabbath Master Of Reality"

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

There was an announcement a couple of days ago about the darwin tenners.

They normally only announce it once there are so few in circulation that it hardly matters. You can still take the old money to the bank of england and exchange it, or you can sit on it and sell it to a collector.
