Sorry to be a bureaucrat, but a)please post here for clarity and updates and b)I've still gotta keep things organised, you know.

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Incidentally, I think Blair was actually genuinely upset. Hell, even my mum's crying about this.

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New answers, new answers...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Talliban have denied responsibility and condemned those who did it. So the bottle spins again. Arafat has also condemned the attack of course.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My uncle is leader of the opposition party here, Michael Noonan. He just rang me there. The information being given in what he told me were official circles is that there were 5 planes taken and not all are accounted for. There is no serious consideration anywhere that Bin Laden was responsible for this, or at least that he was the main orchestrator. The popular theory is that a country has backed a terrorist group heavily, Iraq obviously was suggested but to be honest he admitted that even those supposedly in the know dont have a clue.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and there are groups of Palestinians celebrating in Gaza, for fuck's sake. All cheering the names of the latest people to claim responsibility

cabbage, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate is in New York. Her flight to come back to the UK was scheduled to leave just after 9am. I've yet to hear from her, but she was flying from Newark so I think she'll be okay. I really hope so. Other ILE-ers from the US: are you all okay?!

My office here in London is being evacuated right now. The police have received warnings that similar attacks on London will commence at rush hour in the City and so the Chairman of my firm has sent everyone home. It's crazy here, a real atmosphere of terror and 'we're next...'. Personally, I think we'll be fine, which is why I'm one of the few people still in the office.

I'm more scared of the repercussions now. I'm furious at this, so imagine how Bush and Blair feel. We could be at the start of major military action.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

US/Mexico border now closed, why for?

cabbage, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going home. Best of luck to you all. I really really pray nothing happens in Britain and I hope you all get the calls you need in the states from relatives and friends.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG - this thread is absolutely huge and even on my fast work connection takes forever to load. Would it not be a good idea to recommend people to post new stuff to a new (clean) one?

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It amazes me that when my brother left to go back to school at about 5 to 2 everything was fine, and by the time he'd got back at 4pm all Hell had broken loose. God alone knows what's going to happen as a result of this.

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll delete Dan's post up the top, that should sort things out.

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Loose History:

This is the first attack on US soil since WWII, when a lost Japanese submarine attacked oil fields in Gaviota, California AFTER Pearl Harbor. I understand there were Russians in Alaska, but it wasn't a state then.

JM, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm leaving for Greenwich now, I can't read too much more of this. I hope everyone's ok and stays that way.

Take care everyone

cabbage, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Delete both of them. I only added them so that people could refer to stuff that was written on the other threads (and so that you could delete the other two at a later date).

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

irony apparent - two planes hit nyc, a nother hits washington pentagon - what does george w do - hops in a plane and heads to dc...god bless america

Geoff, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've been asked to be part of a skeleton staff here at my office so I'm going to be around for a while. I'm trying to call Kate's mom, but it seems she's on-line as I'm constantly getting a busy tone. Pretty sure Kate's all right though she's invariably very stressed out. I'll post more news as it comes in.

This place has gone crazy though. We're in a different country for heaven's sake!

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Right, here's the plan: no-one post to the two old threads, and once this thread starts to become unwieldy a new one will be started, so everything runs smoothly.

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I almost shit myself when a BBC newscaster accidentally said that a plane had crashed into Chicago! Talk about conflicting stories!

marianna, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

LATEST CONFIRMED FLIGHTS:

UA175, UA93, AA11, AA77.

Also, the entire WTC structure has collapsed. It's completely gone.

I stood at the top of it in November 1995. Now it's gone and a lot of people have gone with it. Why am I still at work?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I woke up, switched on CNN and 15 minutes later, they cut into a commercial break to go straight to New York. I saw the second plane hit on live TV, then the giant fireball as the second tower exploded. The last thing I saw as I left the hotel was one of the towers collapsing. The only other thing I can think of being on live TV like this was the Israeli hostages at the Munich Olympics, but it's hardly comparable. I am at work, not working. Nobody is. Walk into somebody's office and they're looking at the CNN website. I'm numb, I don't know what else to write.

Madchen, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This evil bastard has had three years to plan Osama bin Laden vows to strike back after cruise missile attack

Saddam's Revenge

Osama Bin Laden

Top two suspects - colluded together?

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Paul, Kate may well be in Canada - all flights in the air at the time have been diverted there.

Madchen, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only way Kate is coming in tonight is if she got out before the grounding. All flights from US airports were grounded at around 9:30/10:00. One of the planes that was hijacked supposedly came from Newark but rather obviously wouldn't be her plane, wrong direction. So she's either safely in her transatlantic plane, not knowing anything about this as she got out before it started, or she's bitching endlessly, stuck in Newark NJ (and quite frankly that's the worst place I've ever been, so she'd be right to be very stressed ;)

I will guarantee you that she's safe though. I would be she got grounded and is stuck there though, and with all the commotion in the tri-state area there are no free phone lines.

Ally, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm okay, although my building, which is across the street from independence hall, was closed. (i didn't even leave for work this morning because i was so freaked out)

maura, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Madchen - I've contacted the airline and her flight was grounded. All is cool in that respect. She's going to be fine.

We just got a message from the head of the company telling us that everyone who stays at work will not be covered by the firm's insurance policy in case of injury. Don't know what to think about that one.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Afghan Taliban say bin Laden not behind U.S. attacks
KABUL, Sept 11 (Reuters) - A spokesman for Afghanistan's ruling Taliban said on Tuesday that Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden could not be responsible for a spate of terror attacks in the United States.
"What happened in the United States was not a job of ordinary people. It could have been the work of governments. Osama bin Laden cannot do this work, neither us," Abdul Hai Mutmaen told Reuters from the southern city of Kandahar.
"We are not supporting terrorism. Osama does not have the capability. We condemn this.
"This could have been the act of either internal enemies of the United States or its major rivals. Osama cannot do this work ...," he added.
Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York on Tuesday morning and a third into the Pentagon. New York's mayor said many lives had been lost in the attacks, which President George W. Bush called a "terrorist attack".

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was trapped on the top of the WTC once, with Stephanie and Fred. The elevators weren't working. I can't believe I'll never see that building again. I loved going there, my crucifix was purchased for me at the mall underneath it at a little sterling silver kiosk. When I worked at Citibank I'd go through there all the time, I'd actually take the long way home from work to go thru the WTC to look at the shops and take a chocolate from the sample tray at Godiva, which was located right before the entrance to the Path.

Aly, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So if it is state sponsored then Saddam maybe linked?

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesus, Paul. As if confirmation was needed that you work for the world's most evil law firm.

United Airlines has released a statement here. It's pretty short.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would imagine they'll rebuild the WTC better than before. That's what we did to a lot of our buildings during World War II, and they became monuments to the people who suffered. Coventry Cathedral is a fitting example.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

REBUILD? Impossible. Like Oklahoma, that's going to become a memorial park, you just know it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another buliding which was hit by WTC debris is collapsing. I don't know which one; this is an eyewitness account.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have a suspicion that neither bin lauden nor sadam are behind this...too obvious...something deeper is running here...ins't it just the defining tv event of the year/10 yrs though - that plane slicing into the building...it's amazing.

Geoff, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All of lower manhattan is being evacuated due to gas leaks. I'm about to lose my eyewitness.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As the afternoon drags on I'm left with a mild feeling of dread that all this could possibly be a US equivalent of the Reichstag fire. Sorry for being paranoid, but, y'know...

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The repercussions from this will be bad, believe me.

Woah!!! Mass sirens on Fleet Street!!!! Something's actually going on out there - police vans and cars, plus an ambulance and fire engine!

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whoever is responsible calculated it to perfection. I hate to use that word, but they (a) hit the military and financial centres of the US (b) did it at a time when the maximum number of people were moving, getting to work or were already there in NY (c) did it when the rest of the world was waking up and switching on the TV or radio, or already listening while they drove to work (d) sent the second plane into the WTC when the TV cameras were focussing on it. From the terrorists' point of view it couldn't have gone off much better. Assuming there's not more to come, that is.

Madchen, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

biggest global TV event from a US slant since the Gulf War when US/NATO bombed Iraq and liberated Kuwait.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I meant "did it when the rest of the US was waking up", not the world, obviously.

Madchen, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Conservative Party has delayed announcement of party leadership winner 'as mark of respect' - yeah, right

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The conspiracy theorists are already advancing that one, DG. I should note I would prefer the interpretation of 'seizing on event for ulterior motives' rather than 'planned it all from the start.'

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An MSNBC reporter was in the WTC when it was hit. Here's his story since it's hard to get to sites:

I WENT OUT THE side door. Initially I thought it was a car accident. Then I looked up and saw Tower One of the World Trade Center in flames. It was clear there were hundreds of casualties. Everyone was on cell phones. I’d lost my cell phone and laptop computer when I ran out the building. I went over to the Hudson River. After I called into to my editor from 3 World Trade Center across the street, there was another wave of panic and people were running everywhere. I went outside and saw Tower Two had been hit, right about in the middle. For a while, I just stared and watched with the other survivors as the tower burned. As I was watching, I heard a gasp and a “Oh no!” Someone had just jumped or fallen from the top of Tower One. I saw three more people fall from the Tower One.

There were people injured on the street, probably hit by falling debris. I kept walking, looking for a phone. Around 9:40 a.m. ET or so there was another wave of rescue vehicles rushing down town. I talked to some people who saw the second plane hit Tower Two. I was about a quarter of a mile away when I heard people scream. I looked back and saw Tower Two was gone, and the sky was filled with plumes of smoke. I eventually made it up to Greenwich Village, where a man named John Roccosalva was kind enough to let me and other survivors use the telephone and get a glass of badly needed water in his tiny studio apartment. Another man, Harvey Schonbrun, who works at the brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald, had been on the 78th floor of Tower One when the first plane hit. He said “everything went black, I was thrown to the floor.” He said he had crawled to the hall and to the stairwell. Another man, Brian Conlon, was on the 37th floor. He was a survivor of the previous World Trade Center bombing. He said he was 15 flights down by the time the alarms began sounding. I left the apartment and went to St. Vincents Hospital in reenwich Village about hlaf mile north of the Trade Center where the scene was one of barely controlled chaos. Police are asking for volunteers to direct traffic and move vehicles. Hundreds of people are lined up to donate blood. Hospital officials say they have taken 112 casualties, no fatalities. That, of course, is just one hospital of dozens or scores in the area. I can’t describe what it feels like to look to the south from Greenwich Village and see blue sky where the two towers once stood. New Yorkers are in mourning, and I know many share the feeling in the pit of my stomach — like a part of our body has been ripped away. And how do I describe a mass murder with so many hundreds of witnesses and survivors? I can only tell my story.

Samantha, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

from a mailing list

"Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden warned three weeks ago that he and his followers would carry out an unprecedented attack on U.S. interests for its support of Israel, an Arab journalist with access to him said on Tuesday."

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sirens on Fleet Street a one-off rather than continued Police / Ambulance rush, I'm pleased to say. Obviously I don't know where they're headed or why, but nothing obviously out of the ordinary.

Tim, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim - whereabouts are you? I'm on Chancery Lane and we keep getting lots of freaked out people here. Guess no-one will stop panicking until 7pm or so here.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Momus, perhaps being Momus, has posted/is posting his thoughts and photos here.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm in an office about halfway up Fleet Street, near McDonalds. People here (myself included) more shocked by what's happened over there (many friends / relatives to be concerned about) than worried about anything over here. Still a spooked feeling around the place, though.

Tim, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're probably right Ned, but it doesn't mean I'm not concerned. Remember, the Labour government pushed through the Terrorism Bill last year as a result of a few crusties going apeshit on May Day, so who knows what they've got up their sleeve as a result of this.

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I get back to the barbican at what? 2:30ish, phone my mum, watch it on tv. shocked, appalled. When the first tower goes down, start to think seriously what could happen to London, especially in the middle of the city, where I was. Got the fuck out, pissing myself going through Bank station, back in London with the family. Never been so relieved.
I went to Windows on the World on my 18th birthday, and now it's not there. This is appalling and I just don't know what else to say.

Bill, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

President Bush will be making a statement in the next couple of minutes - it's about 12:45 EST where I'm @, about 5:45 GMT in the UK.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The atmosphere is weird, you're right. It's like shock, fear and dread all at once. I don't think we have anything to worry about in London, and that we should be more concerned about the US, but at the same time there's a peculiar feeling around the place.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somebody at work said it was the anniversary of Camp David - does anyone know anything about that?

Madchen, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MIKE IS FINE, MIKE IS FINE. Just posted on the thread I asked about him. Oh thank goodness.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed it over on the other thread, I'm delighted to report that Mike Daddino woke up late, and is fine. Good.

Tim, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Home now. Girlfriend still in NYU? Evacuating street by street? No word. Still terrified. Sister still sitting on 27th floor on Market St. unevacuated in Philadelphia, a huge target against a blue sky. No word from anyone I know who works in and around the WTC. Mother sobbing in next room. It's a black, black fucking day.

jess, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't Camp David the Waco Disaster?

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is the anniversary of the Camp David accord, yes...we were just discussing that a minute ago in the office

Ally, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm with dg on this one - why was there no warning...why was george w out of state...where is he now...how come colin powil is now flying back to washington...i mean think of oklahoma - there were warnings, there was a fuckup in the organisation...something else is going on.

Geoff, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Camp David Accords: framework for peace in middle east 5th to 17th September 1978.

Madchen, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bush is flying to a secret location.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have the wrong conspiracy theory, clearly. It's odd that no-one has claimed responsibility yet, in all honesty. Makes you wonder if maybe it was someone no-one's thought of.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Camp David peace accord 17th Sept 1978. Seems unlikely.

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

linzi is safe here with me gareth.

we're all going to give blood. we're being told not to drink the water incase its been contaminated. things are very confused, people are panic buying in the supermarkets.

its all gone crazy

can people calm down asnd stop specuating about who did this and what's ghoing to happen next.

ed, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bush is at Barksdale Air Force Base, which is in Lousiana, actually a smart move then to leak false info about him going to DC. As David said he is due to speak soon.

scott p., Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw the fucking World Trade Center collapse from the jetty near my apartment in Jersey City. I'm just in shock... I hope everyone will be fine....

matthew, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most unpleasant opinion so far (from the Urban75 forums):
"I hope the number of dead workers dosn't outweigh the number of the burgouwise WTC twats."
Charming.

DG, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CRASH BUSH STATEMENT URGENT Fetch Top Bottom ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Bush says has taken steps to protect American people BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, Louisiana, Sept 11 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush said on Tuesday the United States had taken all appropriate steps to protect the American people and would hunt down and punish those responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "We have taken all appropriate security precautions to protect the American people," Bush told reporters in a hastily arranged appearance at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.
"Make no mistake, the United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts."
Bush said the U.S. military had been put on "high alert status" and said he had taken security precautions to ensure the functioning of the U.S. government. Bush cut short a trip to Florida to return following the Tuesday morning attacks in New York and Washington.
REUTERS

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The fact no one has accepted responsibility yet and everything that has happened is being referred to as a terrorist attack, not war, suggests the possibility this may be an internal attack, like the Oklahoma City bombing. We all have different radio stations on, and I heard there is an urgent need for type O blood.

Lesley Higgins, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, i have to say that i find the blame placing this early really distasteful. i want to make sure everyone i love is home safe and un- dead before i start pointing fingers. (if i ever do, which i probably won't.) this is waiting by the phone time a million.

jess, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has anyone got the condolences e-mail From CoffeeCup, at the end of which it says: 'We would like to also say on record that if any country is found responsible for these attacks, we call for that country's complete destruction and annihilation.'
That is just fucking terrible, I have to say. Now is not the time for all out war.

Bill, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

distasteful's not the right word. but you know what i mean.

jess, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Matthew H... *very* pleased to hear from you (indeed all others checking in). Take care.

Tim, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is CoffeeCup?

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There will be lots of pointless finger pointing for quite some time, I'm sure. My parents were a police officer and nurse during the IRA attacks on mainland Britain during the 70s and remember that the people out for blood after the events were the worst aspects of it all. It's more important to worry about everyone involved now, in all honesty.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my sister in PA, just outside Pittsburgh, just called ... said she was trying to get through for three hours, and just now the phone got cut off ... she says that they're saying the plane that crashed outside Pittsburgh was shot down, because it was on its way to D.C. ... my brother-in-law is OK, he works for the feds ... parents also in PA visiting friends, my sister will tell them I'm OK, which is good because i wasn't able to get through to their home in NJ

shit is still crazy over here in Hoboken -- ambulances from all over the fucking place in North Jersey are converging at the train station ... I can't believe this is happening, I'm actually scared for the first time that this is only get worse

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bill, is there ever a time for all-out war?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks for posting that link, Ned. The photo taken by Momus has put this into perspective more than the umpteenth replay of the buildings collapsing. I have watched far too many disaster movies on my television to differentiate fact from fiction. Somehow a photo taken by a bystander has made it seem more real than anything else I've viewed.

Andy, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the press reports are changing as we speak as to what bush said...i read the first one which said we will punish those _folks_ - I know it's only a word, but it's intriguing from a media analysis point of view.

Geoff, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there is never a time for war. we should noit let this be an excuse to let monkey boy and his controillers get their way

ed, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shit is crazy here in Jersey City (directly across Hudson River from lower Manhattan): stockbrokers from Long Island are hanging out on my doorstep drinking rum & coke, people are just wandering around lost. I'm sitting in my apartment feeling lost... Tim, I think everyone is accounted for...

matthew, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I almost got into a fight an hour ago with a guy who was blaming the Arabs, saying all sorts of racist shit about Arabs and Islam and that they should all be rounded up and deported ... it was all I could do to stop from punching the asshole

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I imagine that first Bush speech was scribbled out in a bit of a rush, if it was written down at all, and he was just using the first words that came to hime.

Madchen, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a shame that people are jumping to conclusions. I think it's partly due to fear -- identify who did this and stop them from doing more. I also am suspecting that it could be internal. OKC was a shock when it was revealed to be internal. in the end it doesn't really matter. someone, somewhere orchstrated this attack against innocent people.

Samantha, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bush did say "folks", I heard him say it on TV.

I think this is probably America's worst day since Antietam, and it could easily top that.

DV, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim, all the old Sini crowd are okay. Brian and Matthew in Jersey City, Matthew heard from Steve who says Amanda is stuck in the city but okay, Laurel was at work in Gramercy Park but is now in the East Village at Julie's building, and Phil and I are at our respective apartments in Brooklyn. There's ash falling and the air smells of burning rubber or something.

My prayers are with everyone worrying about their loved ones.

Benjamin, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Madchen, in that case, the speech should have gone something like, "See Dick. See Jane. See Dick run. Run Dick, run."

I apologize for the inappropriate humor, but I have to laugh at something otherwise I'm liable to tear someone's head off.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he did say "folks", I just heard it on cnn.

fritz, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think that Bush's use of the word "folks" is at all meaningful.

Matt, Ben, thanks both, I'm sure our lot over here will be as pleased as I am when I let them know you're safe. Love to all.

Off home (and therefore off-line) now. Good luck, take care everyone.

I do think he was just using vocabulary that was normal to him. I don't think there's anything to be read into it. I'm not a Bush fan by any means, but the way he handled the situation when he first found out, keeping extremely calm in a classroom full of children was admirable.

i just found out that there's a good chance a friend of mine was on one of the upper levels of the wtc when attacked. hoping and praying. hoping and praying.

Even though I've been watching since the start, I keep hearing details on the news and thinking they're misreading the autocue or something. Like when they say "planes" instead of "plane", it just seems implausible.

We all just got told to leave, so I have to go. Stay safe everyone. And be safe, everyone else.

it's not that he said folks, it's that the press releases are changing his words...am just listening to this guy talking about how "any nation taht is found to have harboured anyone related to this will be seen as co-conspirator."

For the sake of convenience I propose starting a new thread every 100 posts, and that's what I've done.
