The Albrecht Durer of midfielders.

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 15 May 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

1st half : Mickey Hazard
2nd half : Johhny Bumstead

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

God yeah, Boban in his pomp was great (another one with questionable politics? I know he's supposed to have lamped a riot policeman on the pitch in a riot).

Jan Molby was great, in size and talent.

Graham Souness was a fantastic general in midfield

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

kennedy bakircioglu!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronnie Whelan.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

For Ireland, whelan's goal against Russia obviously=astonishing.

For Liverpool, extra time equaliser against Portsmouth after a young Sicknote Anderton had given the Posh the lead.

One of the Frenchest looking men ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like David Batty.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You can always rely on Tim to stick up for good old unglamorous PROPER ENGLISH FOOTBALL, can't you?

My favourite midfield maestros are Steffen Freund and David Ginola, but I'm under no illusions here...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

what about say........Paul Stewart Matt? A man who did a great service for both Liverpool and Spurs, erm........eh well.....ahem.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Did no-one else notice that Madrid only scored last night when they started lumping it upfield early?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You're a man after Big Ron's heart it seems Tim, did anyone else notice Big Ron practically creaming himself on Tuesday at the thought of "these two unpredictable big lads giving the AC Milan defence something to deal with".

Later as a high ball came in: "oh they won't half hate dealing with this one"

Later still as Toldo came up for the final corner: "THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT!!!!!!"

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Ron's brand of football was far too sophisticated for my taste.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

David Howells!!!!!!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

John Sheridan + Carlton Palmer.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Zinedane Zidane + Patrick Viera for a French spin on the theme.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Paul Stewart was a great, as was Vinny Samways.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick is cheating by naming good players. To be a proper midfield general you are required to only do eight things on the pitch.

1. Tackle
2. Run
3. Tackle
4. Run
5. Pass
6. Shout
7. Fight
8. Score one goal a season at most.

I realise this now excludes Ginola...

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm liking this thread much more than I thought I would.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Chris Marsden may have just taken ownership of this thread.

I think Chris Marsden is fantastic, especially as the one goal he scores is generally amazing and he can't believe he scores it himself.

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Marsden scores the winner in the cup final.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Marsden has a terrific haircut, to which I aspire.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

soon, Tim, soon.

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Just this once, I'm with the geezer Passantino.

The well travelled midfielder arrived at The Dell in February 1999 for £800,000 from Birmingham and linked up with former manager, Dave Jones, who was in charge of him at Stockport. Marsden started his professional career with Sheffield United in 1987 and made 18 appearances with one goal to his name for the Blades.

After 18 months at his hometown club, Marsden moved on to play for Huddersfield, Wolves, on loan at Coventry and Notts County.

Marsden was a key factor in the club's successful battle with relegation in 1998/99, and scored two precious goals in 14 games. 1999/00, though, was interrupted by injury, although he made a successful return to action later in the season.

In 2000/01, the abrasive midfielder was an integral part of Glenn Hoddle's plans and has continued to enjoy prominence under Gordon Strachan.

This Season
Appearances: 38(37)
Goals: 3
Yellow Cards: 10
Red Cards: 0

Ha. Can that be in the soon-to-be-started crappest managers thread?

I nominate

Well I've included the best midfielders I can think of on the 'First XI' thread, but I have particularly fond memories of Liam Brady too. I loved the sense that he could play at a different physical pace from everyone else because his football brain was working at a different pace from the rest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

again, add to crap managers list...
