Sorry sorry sorry for this thread, but hell.

So how are you doing in Champ right now? How many seasons have you played? Who are your star players? What tactics work for you? What do you think of CM4 now you've had a chance to get to know it? How are Woking doing?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't bought it yet, but when I do, it will be my greatest companion on those long nights away from tawdry isle... :(

Aside-do you find being specific with tactics work in CM? I always find it to be a bit random (though marking a player can help, on occasion).

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder how Tom is doing with plucky Inverness.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(This is LMA2003 not CM4)

Tom feels he's taken Inverness as far as they could go - 4th in the SPL, and into the Scottish Cup final, knocking out Rangers on the way. Without the funds needed to improve the ground though it's hard to see how he can build on those results. He was bitterly disappointed at the lack of serious management offers and so the game in question is currently in limbo, though not for long as the lure of a UEFA place is a strong one.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(A new game has been started, managing Liverpool. Also there's Zoo Tycoon and videos and a Civ revival to occupy me)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd just won the League with Spurs, it being 2009/2010. A long managerial career, starting off with Northampton Town, achieving promotion, then leaving after a row with the board (over wage demands, you cannot expect me to bring Premiership football to a club that's only allowing its manager £9,000 a week for a star player). Then off to the Pie Haven that is Wigan, a good few seasons, relying on your usual hotch-potch of future talent, and golden oldies. Got into the Premiership via the play-offs, after two seasons struggling against relegation, realised that my future lay elsewhere. Spurs came in for me at the right time. 16th in my first season, 1st in my second. Won the league by 8 points. I've uninstalled it (kept the save game file, though) for now, so it may let me continue with my exam revision (bollocks will it...).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I envy you all.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Just about to finish season 2 with Woking. 19th last season, just avoiding relegation out of the Conference (and the game), but I can't finish lower than 12th this season despite starting off with 10 defeats and 2 draws in my first 12 games. Playing a direct 5-4-1 system with Yugoslav international Slavisa Jokanovic (what on earth is he doing in the Conference?) sweeping up at the back and Ivory Coast star Raphael Nade banign them in at the sharp end, occasionally supported by journeyman veteran Warren Patmore.

Yet to find any loan signings who are any good, even at this level, though in another game I got an absolute star to come to Torquay - Brian Kerr of Newcastle, who averages over 8.

Hoping AFC Wimbledon will be promoted to the Conference at the end of this season, and that they'll be looking for a manager...

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I am getting this as soon as my exams finish, I can't fucking wait!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I am getting this as soon as my exams finish

Ronan, I applaud your will-power. And your commitment to academic excellence.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 15 May 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have only one left and it's on Saturday so it's easy really!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I took months to finish a season as Everton in the 2001/02 version, never really playing it for long enough at a time to get the hang of it. I stuck Big Dunc on the transfer list immediately (no buyers), brought in Bernabia, Bogarde and a couple of cheap Swedes, fast-tracked Rooney (16!) into the first team and goaded a few stellar performances from Alexandersson and Tal. OK until mid-Feb, not a single league win after that, ultimately 15th.

I must have a go at the 2002 close season some time.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 15 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrr. Is anyone running this successfully on Win2000? From what I've read it doesn't work or at least they haven't tested it. Anyone? I'm desperate to play this.

mms (mms), Thursday, 15 May 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was supposed to be realistic, but upthread we had Spurs as champions! (Not that I would wish to wind up any of the Tottenham fans here, of course.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrr

Matt (Matt), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Spurs as champions with my mad skillz in charge, though. Just call me Cloughie.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 May 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I ran it for a while on win2k and it was fine. I know there are patches for it about, maybe they'll sort it for you, mms.

I played for a bit, it made me wish I hadn't played it's previous incarnations so much, I've sort of been-there-done-that with CM. And with Vice City new on the D drive along with my ongoing Desert Combat and C&C Generals dalliances I really don't need another free-time-eater in my life.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 17 May 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! I've downloaded CM4. I used to play a game called 1-0 which had ASCII graphics but was addictive.

Of course, I don't know too much about the teams or players, but it's pretty fun... I just shouldn't play too much till I take the LSAT exam, eh?

But when I do play, tell me what team I should pick!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 19 May 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaargh - whatever you do don't download the player editor - it lets you see the true qualities and stats of all your players and you'll never see them in the same light again...

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 19 May 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
So, Norwich are having a pretty ugly season. We started out well, particularly with a 7-0 humiliation of Wolves, but soon dropped out of both cups pretty fast and settled into mid-table. Long-term injuries to Alex Notman and Chris Llewellyn haven't helped, but the form of David Nielsen and on-loan Luke Chadwick has given the Canaries fans something to smile about. We're pinning our hopes on a playoff place next season, especially if we can get some more experienced players in.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian Kerr! He's amazing and Newcastle'll loan him out to almost anyone.

Managed 9th in my 2nd season with Woking, mainly thanks to Kerr again. I've been away for three weeks, so it'll be interesting to get re-acquainted.

Anyone else want to update us?

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Am I right in thinking that CM5 came out and everyone hated it?

I want to play CM4 again but the squads are all old...

Here's a question for you - how random do you think the CM engine really is? Are there really tricks to management or is the whole thing a sham? I always found training a waste of time, for example.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I just used fitness training always.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Official CM5 not made by original CM peeps, supposedly shit.

CM team made Football Manager 2005, it's supposed to be the shizznit.

I don't seem to have the time to commit to CM nowadays.

Scream! Scrovula, Scream! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

So, erm, I can't be the only one who saved the game before matches and replayed them till I won?

trappist monkey, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

hahaha!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

using a realtime editor to kill the opposition goalie is good too.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I never cheated until CM4, that one was just fucking awful, so many glitches, it was crap.

In the golden age of CM games I could win things with all teams, I wasted so many entire days on it, the images would be burned onto my eyes sometimes. Those were fine times, at the age of 15, managing Spain and Real Madrid.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

CM4 had glitches?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I had a glorious Barcelona side on one of the earlier incarnations. My brother was Real madrid and we would sit there for hours...

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i had a friend who would constantly talk about his ability to double josep guardiola's value in champ 3 and i mean constantly.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

which was the "ultimate" version, I think 99/00, or 00/01, the first one you didn't need the CD for cos I remember my friends and myself all bought it then we all took it back.

it was fantastic. I remember players you'd never heard of then like Thomas Gravesen were amazing. Tommy Svindal Larsen, 200,000 and he was incredible.

And reincarnations! made the game easy but so much fun.

One time there was a 3 way game with me and 2 friends, and 2 of us secretly made a German player called GULL IBLE, who was amazing in 4 or 5 positions, because our other friend always bought young German players.

He never noticed until we told him.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

TOMMY SVINDAL LARSEN!!!!

TOP player.

I made a Norwich team of great Hollywood actors. Burt Lancaster was our star striker, Sean Penn in goal...

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Football Manager 2005 is the business, simple as. I've got to assume all those errors in the last few CM games were the result of Eidos interference, and now SI can hold it down on their own, they're running it again.

However, could the Northampton Town board be any more fucking unambitious? No money for players, for wages, and we're playing in a 7500 capacity stadium in the fucking Championship! Jeez.... Third season below the topflight now, and I think this is when we finally retrn to League One. I've half got my eye on the Leicster job, they've been a sleeping giant too long for me.

Michael Chopra is a god on the game, though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I was waiting for the Dom seal of approval I think before getting FM2005, it's half price in HMV now I might go for it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

What are these "errors"?

xp-I'm getting it!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

It could be worse Dom, you could still be playing on the side of the cricket pitch.

Scream! Scrovula, Scream! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

too many to even remember Adam.

off the top of my head, reputation never improving no matter how much you win, player of the year awards and manager of the months completely fucked, impossible to sign players, like absolutely impossible to afford them, while nobody will pay anything for your players.

I'm sure there must be more.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Dom is all about FM 2005, although do get the latest patch- with the new INTERFERING CHAIRMAN GIMMICK! Manage AC Milan or Chelsea, have your chairman decide that it's OK to buy £80 million's worth of players behind your back!

Also, reskin it from www.sortitoutsi.net. There's a lovely skin called "Elegance" that makes it look a peach.

Also, Freddy Guarin is a good buy as well. £2 mill from the Columbian leagues, and he's frankly world class. Any team below the level of Champion's League contenders would be improved by him.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Derek Riordan is bloody good too - you can generally get him for 1 mil, and also Vincent Kompany is godlike

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Ah, Tommy Svindal - he was a bugged player who's Ability was higher than his Potential Ability so it never dropped below the Potential (157 if I remember).

FM2005 is really, really good. They've had to change a fair bit with CM5 coming out as well and I get the feeling that the next incarnation will be THE BOY. There's a few things that are only slightly implemented or are hinted at that look promising. Elegance skin also recommended, and are the various other odd bits you can get such as Subbuteo players for tactics icons that are niiiice.

The sound youth buys on FM2 are Guarin, Kompany, Van Den Borre, Adu and Holm plus 2 Liverpool and 2 AC Milan U18's (it's random which ones are good). Although most of them will get homesick if you buy them straight away. As well as them the game will randomly make a few youngsters very good - get dem scouts on da go. Also - hire a billion (good) coaches. It works.

I'm on 2014 with a long-standing game based on my girlfriends assertation that some rich steel magnate should pump 10 mill into Sheff Wed (giving you about 4 mil to play with after cancelling the debts - after 9 seasons the bank balance now at 50mil or so). I've not touched it in a few months, but oh yes, Champs League glory has been ours. Inter Milan, we score in the first 5 mins then defend like unholy Gods for the remainder. We've now done 5 seasons at 4th or 3rd in the Prem, but we're not really title contenders. Chelsea just buy the best 3 players in the world every year and Man U and Arsenal perform just as well as currently with the piss-poor players they've since bought. In fact, we're majorly fucked from next season onwards as the German attacking-midfielder regen genius that is Mirko Barth is dead set on leaving (avg. 8.17). I've scouted everything to the high hills and there's nothing that comes close to him. And my new dogs-bollocks AMRC wants to go home already. Whiney cunt.

Although, we still have the other regen Godhead - THE BUTTY (he is now even better than this screenshot 3 years on).

http://www.coastaltown.nildram.co.uk/porl/butler.jpg

He is very good at things.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Is it me or is there an unusual number of very early goals (i.e in the first 5 minutes)?

Also, FM05 is good but doesn't include Anatoli Todorov...

Baaderonixx cancels each other out (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm sold on FM05, now to muster the strength to drive to the shops, in my illness.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Is there a Mac version?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

It would be great if, just like in real life, a footballplayer or ex-fp dies, and it is shown on your news. Like george Best, feher,... To make it all just a little bit more realistic

how are we getting on then?

i've moved to allay some of the disappointment of qpr missing out on abgonlahor on loan ("seen by some as the new geoff hurst"?!!) by err, signing malky mackay and hoping that will somehow guarantee promotion like it does irl.

The Cobblers are reliably shit as they always are on FM games. Still, Paul Jones and Gary Holt are both at the club on loan, and we're now a FEEDER CLUB for West Ham. 19th with a bullet I tells ya.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 October 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

oh no, new Football Manager and new Pro Evo the same week.......just when you thought you could so some work...

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 October 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

This is looking pretty good, but it always takes me a wee while to get used to a new Champ interface. I don't think this interface is the most intuitive ever, but the new features make it seem like a cracking upgrade. Nothing that a change of skin wouldn't change I imagine.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

can't argue with the attention to detail at least - fat kevin gallen's just gone down with food poisoning.

i was heading for the sack until the double loan signings of dj campbell and young danny sturridge ("seen by some as the new gary lineker") added a bit of firepower. i never ever like playing with wingers so i've gone with a counterattacking 4132, which has yielded the same beatings i got before with the odd (and i mean odd) 5-0 home win every now and then.

a news item has just come up entitled "RESPLENDENT RASIAK!"

I am actually going to have to buy an external hard disk solely for the purpose of playing this, aren't I? Given my management style up to now has basically consisted of spending entire evenings in front of the 'world transfers' screen and offering trials to more or less every player that gets released by an SPL club, the new scouting system screenshots are near enough making me weep at their beauty. Here's to yet more hours spent cursing the day Leon Constantine was born, then.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, the level of media interaction in this game is absolutely outstanding.

Jerome Watt gets injured for me, so I let reserve team winger Ryan Gilligan have a few games run out. He hits a stunning run of form, three nines in a row, two MoM awards. All of a sudden, Neil "Larry" Grayson, Cobblers' icon of the mid 90s, is talking to the press about how Gilligan is the heir to his crown as Northampton's favourite player. Then Dario Gradi's talking to the press about how Gilligan is the main threat in the upcoming Northampton/Crewe match and how he's devising special plans to keep him quiet. Amazing.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Hvaing had a truly attrocious season I've just kept QPR in the championship on the last day of the season with a 2-0 victory over 6th place Stoke. Kevin Gallen, after a lengthy goal drought, was the hero of the day.

This should not have excited me as much as it has but I am elated!

Vauxhall Motors.

It's a struggle, but it's a worthy one.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Ah FM, how I love thee. Mixed fortunes for me - my Liverpool game is going swimmingly (won the Prem in season 2 and got to the CL Final, won the Treble in season 3!) but with Wolves I limped to 15th in season 1 and was sacked in about November of season 2 while second bottom. Poor show.

What a game though, it's basically all I do on evenings in these days.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

I need a new challenge soon to reignite my passion, I kinda burned myself out by playing five hours a day from November to March.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

Try my hometown club, Ballyclare Comrades, in the Irish League second division! They won it at a canter IRL after being narrowly (and incredibly unluckily) relegated on GD after their own games had finished last season. I started a game with them, finished 5th in season won and started well in season 2, before I got the itch to play with Liverpool. I'll go back to it eventually.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

Does this make it time for the first ever ILE FM challenge thread?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

is fm2007 any good? the last time i enjoyed any of this series was waaay back to CM4.

fm2005 wrecked my head with the amount of misses from strikers, so i stopped buying them. can ILX recommend the newer ones?

darraghmac, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Darragh, I think FM07 is pretty good, yes. It's still almost impossible to sell unwanted players in the lower leagues, but the whole package is pretty convincing.

Mark C, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I maybe manage to sell one player every two season... At least, I discovered that you could loan out practically anyone by offering them to clubs (for loan).

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

FM2007 is a game you need to *learn* before you can enjoy it properly. Hit the official forums and FM Britain for some basic tactic strategy.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

Dom, here's a challenge for you.

Make a placeholder manager, call him Holiday Man or something. Put him on holiday until June 19th. At this point, save, and go on holiday one more day to the 20th. (The save is so you can reload if you don't like your selections, coming up)

Now make a new manager and take up the helm of one of the newly-promoted clubs to the Conf N or Conf S. There should be three new teams apiece. If you don't like those teams colors or something, reload and try again, because it is pretty random in its decision of who gets brought up.

Anyway, lead one of those teams to glory. Here's a pic showing a user in charge of Wimbledon, one of the aforementioned "previously unplayable" teams.

Now _that_ sounds like a challenge. OK, it's on.

I am contemplating the idea of taking a Conf team, giving them a bunch of star youth players in the editor with the names of ILX0rs and making a picture thread showing us dominating the world for the pure LOLs!

Oh, and here's a link, in case you want to read a better description of the challenge (I didn't make it up, this dafuge dude did)

Problem with having a whole team of stars in the conference - unless they're all on 5 year contracts you'll lose them to prem teams along the way. I imagine also some of them will get pissy at you not letting them leave Aldershot or whoever and follow their dream of playing for Real Madrid, and then team and individual morale will suffer and you'll get fired.

Having said that, you totally have to try it :)

I know this because I created myself as a world class 17 year old left back at Torquay and after one single pre-season friendly, Arsenal came in for me.

That's why you stick them on a contract until 2013 or so in the editor, AND give them loyalty 20 (so they love the team), AND give them ambition 1 (this way they have no overwhelming urge to play high-level football), AND give them max favoured club/personnel stats for teammates and the club.

Oh, and reputation 0, so nobody knows about them in the premier league, except teams who specifically scout the conference n/s (which is none of them, they all tend to focus no lower than L1 or L2 I find)

five months pass...

Anyone tried the new one?
