Matrix Reloaded -- minor spoilers

Obviously some extra large expectations, and it kind of fell flat. Los Bros Wachowski seem to have taken their acclaim too much to heart and started to "believe" in their own profundity. Thus, minorly tedious exposition and pontification, the jerks. What I wanted was the SFX and mad kungfu, which in spite of the pointless philosophizing, was present in spades.

However, the action was almost too sophisticated in that too much was happening on screen and my eyes didn't always know where to focus and ended up zipping around like a hummingbird. Obviously, where Neo fights 100 Agent Smiths. Also didn't really help things was that since Neo is basically Superman now, there's very little suspense involved in his battles, I knew he was going to come out aok.

A fight done right is Morpheus vs. the agent on top of the truck. Suspsenseful very, outcome seemed in doubt quite often, and most importantly, COOL POSING.

Where Neo meets the Architect, it absolutely was channeling 2001, though in a post 2k1 way hur hurr hurr. And the interesting twist is that the "real world" is another Matrix, i.e. we've got nested Matrices here people. Reinforced by the fact that in conversation with Archie, the camera keeps going into one of the screens on the wall as if that's a nested part of reality. Mulitple removes and all.

Haven't seen it yet, but not terribly surprised by the spoiler. Ebert gave it away by quoting that old line about how "it's turtles all the way down."

Besides, I'm going for the insights. I'm going for the sights and sounds. And on that account, I'm really excited about it.

George Lucas dies tonight.
