Okay, so I need y'all help. I'm trying to make some compilations to play at my party, and I want to make them like non-stop pogo fun. The first few are listed below - please suggest to me what works, what doesn't, what's crucially missing etc. Helpful people earn my undying gratitude obviously! Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Needs more Thin Lizzy.

hstencil, Friday, 16 May 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Too much J-Lo. Far too much Michael Jackson. Not enough Misfits.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

no, both of those MJ picks are great (altho I don't think I'd sequence them one after another).

Def. needs "Jailbreak" or "The Boys Are Back in Town."

hstencil, Friday, 16 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Needs more cowbell.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah throw some Blue Oyster Cult on there too, please.

hstencil, Friday, 16 May 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ideally I'd like to have the two MJ picks mixed over eachother as I heard done a while ago, but i don't have the skillzor.

There's more J Lo to come.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

needs more "Got Your Money" & "Danger! High Voltage (Soulchild 12" Booty Mix)". otherwise lookin' good.
(actually, any avalanches tracks suitable? not too sure if saturated enough (or if people are sick of them, or whatever) in australia . . .)

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing "groove is in the heart" is a given. "baby wants to ride"? how much quavery hyper-diva rave stuff?

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

needs "ass n' titties" by dj assault. *that* shit gets a party goin'.
oh, and you know what else is a big crowd pleaser: ludacris' "move."

praying mantis (praying mantis), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You need soap / and water
Soap / and water

Water Water Water Water Water Water Water Water...

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is perfect. As always Mr. Finney has impeccable taste.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, is it last summer again already?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

if you are in Australia it is!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha wait for the next mix mr ess kay - except I don't have that Soulchild remix. Is it as good as his mix of Sugababes' "Soul Sound"?. I don't have any good non-mixed avalanches tracks, although the album will be on hand I'm sure.

"wow, is it last summer again already?"

i want people to be able to sing along to about half of it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

This will be a good party.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm...maybe a *bit* too much Kylie, but otoh you are in Australia.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

For an early 90's rivival you have an unusual amount of post-early-90's stuff.

jm (jtm), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That amount being all of it, natch.

jm (jtm), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy the early nineties cds are still in production. There will be about four of them.

I figure that by eleven o'clock people will have grown tired of the early nineties. Hence the other cds.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

PEOPLE WILL NEVER TIRE OF THE EARLY 90'S!!!

jm (jtm), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

< / GEIR MODE >

jm (jtm), Friday, 16 May 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

In case you need to keep people twice your age happy, you can see the listing here for my party tape.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

TOO MUCH J-LO. You should swap out one of her songs for "Flash" or "One Night In NYC". Also, "Cherchez La Ghost" should be in there somewhere for one of the De La tracks.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 May 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the full soulchild mix of "danger!" (got it off the australasian cd single) is amazing! quotes "blue monday", has full on disco-guitar, "FIRE IN THE DISCO!", etc.

planning any all saints/spice girls/sugababes/etc? "black coffee" (original OR atfc OR neptunes OR wideboyz mix), maybe "overload" or "freak like me" . . .

(more Busta! & I feel silly suggesting this to you but no "one more time", "music sounds better with you" or "romeo" yet? & "in da club" or the beyonce or elephant man remix?)

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 17 May 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

also : are Girls Aloud feasible? also : N'Sync, L'Trimm, Scooter, "California Love".
Will the early 90s stuff encompass early 90s Madonna?
(& if it's not too indie-dance, Paris Angels - "Perfume" is really good, in a very tenous way reminds me of Autobianchi).

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 17 May 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

looks good! please cut bonnie and clyde, that song is bonk. at least in party terms.

jonas lefrel (jonas lefrel), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the two MJs in a row is actually ballsy, and rather genius--like, "OK, you're expecting it to switch into something totally different, but I'm going to turn the intensity up a notch by using the same guy again." it's a smart decision.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd find it a bit annoying probably

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh what am i saying, how could i be irked when 'bilie jean' is playing?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

50 cent! 50 cent!!

Sarah (starry), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim come on you know your party needs to end with bangalter/falcon!

Other than that as you can imagine I think it's a pretty good selection.

DJ Sneak next to that Rapture song is a very on point selection, I was thinking that's the particular style of house I Need Your Love is just this week.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan I have issues with Banagalter/Falcon that even extend to "Put Your Hand In Mine" - even though I think the latter is pretty good.

"(more Busta! & I feel silly suggesting this to you but no "one more time", "music sounds better with you" or "romeo" yet? & "in da club" or the beyonce or elephant man remix?)"

I'm gonna have the Beyonce mix of "In Da Club", some more Basement Jaxx, "Digital Love" I think rather than "One More Time". Which Busta should I play - i was thinking maybe "Make It Clap" but perhaps "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See".

"also : are Girls Aloud feasible? also : N'Sync, L'Trimm, Scooter, "California Love"."

I'm gonna play Girls Aloud right after some garage rock track I think.

N'Sync will have to make do with being represented by "Lick Pops" and JT. "California Love" is gonna be there definitely. I still need a copy of "Cars That Go Boom". I would play Scooter but i don't want to scare everyone - although RAMP did do very well I guess.

"Will the early 90s stuff encompass early 90s Madonna?"

Of course - "Vogue" and "Deeper & Deeper" and maybe "Rescue Me".

"(& if it's not too indie-dance, Paris Angels - "Perfume" is really good, in a very tenous way reminds me of Autobianchi)."

Have not heard this!

"the two MJs in a row is actually ballsy, and rather genius--like, "OK, you're expecting it to switch into something totally different, but I'm going to turn the intensity up a notch by using the same guy again." it's a smart decision."

This is sort of the idea that i was going for. The two MJ cuts plus "Without Me" are supposed to sort of be a stripping-down-to-the-roots thing before switching over to rock. I actually wanted to do an MJ/Prince/Eminem/JT/Lil' Louis/Frankie Knuckles/Basement Jaxx/Daft Punk/Space Cowboy/ODB session but I couldn't work out an order to the tracks where the sense of intensification would grow with each new track. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Otherwise I'll stick with the above I guess.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah and MJ Hibbett.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I was at a wedding reception on Saturday night where they played -- I shit ye not -- James Chance & the Contortions and Black Sabbath back to back. Other fine selections of the evening were tracks by Gang of Four, A Certain Ratio, Human League, Brian Eno, Devo, Gilberto Gil and the Misfits. A splendid time was had by all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it a Killing Joke ceremony? I somehow imagine a lot of dancing around a fire.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it was a colleague of my wife's from her publishing office. I certainly requested the Joke, but they didn't have any in their arsenal...bastards.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(may I humbly suggest that you throw Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Loving Fun" in there somewhere? perfect bring-it-down-a-notch-while-keeping-the-groove-going track. I've been obsessed w/it lately--that drumming! that guitar! THAT GROOVE! that is all.)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That's an excellent idea Matos. I was wondering how to incorporate them into the mix, if only just to spite my singles column editor who doesn't believe I could seriously like them... and my boyfriend who prefers the Eagles and is in this (as with all his thoughts on white music and hip hop) just plain WRONG.

Actually whole swathes of McVie would be kinda cool.

I've yet to do my last couple of cds so if anyone has more suggestions it ain't too late.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You could end the final disc with "Waking Up" by Disco Inferno for that bleak touch of philosophical despair.

Or, if you're still intent on early nineties revival, New FADs "Big."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Two words, Tim: More Bhangra!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't include "The Jumpoff" I may never speak to you again.</hyperbole>
