and I've wanked up the URL and that.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor sod. I bet he longs for the bottomless well of pure quality that is American television.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Compare:

Episodes of Kerching! on today -

British TV - 1
US TV - 0

Thus, you win.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

By a nose. But you guy apparently don't love Raymond in the least, and for that, you get points.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoyed that. Are you going to review the crapper of the American imports (like "Suddenly Susan" or the unholy "Nikki") or is that out of the blog's scope?

Chriddof (Chriddof), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Good idea. I must actually blog again sometime, I miss it.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

nicely done William, some good points raised - similar to the kind of thing you'd read on http://offthetelly.co.uk

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

William's not too keen on covering American imports on the blog. I agree, the "wrestling, it's crazy... NOT AS CRAZY AS DANCING THOUGH!!!!" tedium of Nikki would make it a fine candidate. Perhaps if we get some late night repeats of, say, Dweebs or The Platypus Man then he could be swayed.

Tonight: Dom Passantino writes on Boys and Girls. You lucky lucky people.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 17 May 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait to read that Dom.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And I've just realised I've completely missed one of the main comparisons... fingers crossed Ace Lightning's on next week.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

And imports - well, it's mainly focused on rubbish British programmes, but it's inevitable we'll include some. Fresh Prince Of Bel Air might be an interesting one, for a kick-off, if only due to its ultra-hardy perennial status...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Also - Sunday is me on either Smile, Born And Bred or Full Metal Challenge (FMC clashes with the top 40, though. Curse only having one telly).

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie Brooker's TV column in The Guide a few weeks back was as vitriolic and bitter about Boys & Girls as you can get really...i actually find the show a bit more tolerable than IACGMOOH, Club Reps and somesuch dross - at least G&B has SOME degree if invention behind it i.e. the way they have to spend the money etc. - possibly the idea of Chris Evans i dont know

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate the Fresh Prince now with the reruns after the Simpsons most nights on BBC2, but i used to like it 12/13 years ago

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems okay to me. What's so bad about it?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 May 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's no "we've got it maid", martin

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not sure why i dont enjoy it anymore - Will Smith's screaming gets on my nerves now - and he screamed in most episodes...and i guess all the conscientous mock-and mocking of-stereotypes seems more cheesy/cliched than amusing now, ten years or so later

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe worth noting i never ever watched one episode of The Cosby Show ever...i notice it doesnt seem to get repeated ever, at least not in the UK...or does it?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Not all that many Cosby eps were ever shown here - it was on C4, I think, for a while, but I think we only got a few series. As for the Fresh Prince, I'm not remotely arguing that it was great TV, but it never bothered me and I never disliked it, and I was occasionally amused (particularly when Carlton danced to Tom Jones).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

According to this article from Off The Telly:

"...The Cosby Show was popular enough to enjoy regular and sensible scheduling on Channel 4, and it remains one of the few long-running Stateside sitcoms to have every single episode transmitted on terrestrial television in the UK."

Chriddof (Chriddof), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm astonished! I thought it went on for ages and ages in the US, and we only got a couple of seasons. My apologies.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i did notice it seemed to go on for a good few years on C4 as well - it just never seemed that appealing to me. Fresh Prince Of Bel Air on the other hand, was one of my favourite TV shows in 1991

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is filmed in front of a live stoodio audience

j0e (j0e), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fresh Prince has some damned heavy flaws, in that it is one of the most predictable programmes in terms of plot structure (Will gets a bit outlandish and ropes one of his cousins into a risky venture that goes wrong, and the last five minutes are haranguing of each other before Will apologises then leading into a joke about how Uncle Phil is fat or some such) and characterisation ever, Hilary is the only female character who's ever allowed near a funny line, and the small child is, quite frankly, shit, yet it gets carried along by the actors - obviously every conversation Will has with Carlton will result in a joke about him being short, but Smith somehow kept them all fresh, timed and delivered perfectly... hell, his rapping's cack and his films ain't much better, but when he's on form the man is hilarious. The supporting characters are pretty much one-dimensional stereotypes, some of which really don't work that well (Aunt Viv - she sassy! Yeah...), but Carlton, Hilary and especially Geoffrey are wonderful. As a show that tells a story, Fresh Prince doesn't go that well. But as a collection of one-liners, put-downs and skits, it's up there with the best of them.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 17 May 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

j0e has reminded me of those Lucas & Walliams sitcom parodies...

"This show was filmed in front of YOUR MOTHER!"

Chriddof (Chriddof), Saturday, 17 May 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Could Tom really delete ILM?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 May 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

say what now?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 May 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

CHECK THE LINK STEVE

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 May 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeh

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 May 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice one I didn't know how to do it that way

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 May 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh i only really worked it out just now myself

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 May 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

wow that was a great thread.

oh and good idea for the blog too...we in the states can get BBCAmerica with the Office and Coupling and what have you and some of that is great and some of it is only okay, but I don't know if we ever get subjected to the truly awful programs like this Kerching. That sounds horrible, like Small Wonder or something.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 18 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Updated with today's new entry... it took my 47 minutes to get the HTML for sitemeter and squawkbox right, and I've still got it wrong. Anyway, "Boys and Girls- the final autopsy" is now on.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 18 May 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Coupling is not very popular in the UK, at least 50% of what you'll get on BBC America is crappy

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 May 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

that Ian Hislop/Mark Steel spat was great! it was a bit awkward tho, what with them being on the same team. i found it surprising tho as i didnt find Hislop's comments particularly xenophobic, he is just as scathing about British politicians when they deserve him. Steel attacked him from the left but Hislop only really came a cropper when inferring that Steel was labouring his 'working class left wing/liberal comic' position, 'I've had more baguettes than you've pretended to have hotpots' seemed churlish to say the least esp. as i get the impression Steel is a Londoner judging by his accent.

anyway, Boys & Girls...erm, i'll go read that now

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 May 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Luvverly. Now, just need to make sure them upstairs tape Full Metal Challenge...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 May 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)
