So is it true that if you pop a zit in the triangular area around your nose, you could splatter pus back into your brain, and you could die?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, its proven by science.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I demand a Powerpoint presentation.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Just find somebody with a zit in that area, pop it and see if they die.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

*hides*

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

GET BACK HERE, YOU.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It just ain't fair. Zits in that area are always like mega-big and a little painful. To be cursed with the possibility of DEATH upon infiltrating such a thing is a wicked joke played on the human species.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't this happen in American History X?

chester (synkro), Friday, 16 May 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no, the brain has a membrane protecting it.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 17 May 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You just scanned that off the cover of Being John Malkovich.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

but I don't even have a scanner

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 17 May 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and the resemblance is only very slight:

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 17 May 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You're ruining our fun with your pedanticism!

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

pedantry

DO YOU SEE?

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 17 May 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(I know sorry etc)

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 17 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

but A Nairn was clearly melding pedantry with cynicism

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 May 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this "triangular area around your nose"?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 May 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was "the face" but who knows.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

GPWM Mr Skidmore. Is it the bit between the eyebrows?

Sarah (starry), Saturday, 17 May 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ans = the delta quadrant

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 17 May 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Mark S! I can't read that link at work!

In the meantime, the question sounds like a mangled version of this classic Straight Dope column. Short answer: if you get an infection in that area and things really go bad, yes.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd think this would have been brought up in health class if it was true.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine had a pimple inside his nose, and he had to take antibiotics because otherwise it could block a vein going to his brain, causing him TO DIE!!1! Err, seriously.

Orange, Sunday, 18 May 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if it's true or not, but I do know that if you get a zit in that little crevice between the lower outer edge of your nose and your cheek, attempting to pop it will render you insane with frustration.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 18 May 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean, this little fucker hurts)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 18 May 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Arachnoid??? What - people have spoiders in their brain now???

Nate - I get one like that regularly on my nose's right side. It kills.

N. Ron, Monday, 19 May 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

but Nate, those little fuckers are ostensibly fatal, hence why I started this thread.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 19 May 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Curse you RJG I want to go home and play Arkanoid now.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 19 May 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, the alternative is that you EVENTUALLY manage it, but you've fucked your blood vessels so much by then you get permanent raised capillary action :(

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 19 May 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont understand this 'triangular area around your nose'

minna (minna), Monday, 19 May 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

looking straight at noses, they look quite triangular.

http://www.the-scientist.com/yr1995/dec/dec_art/nose.gif

imagine there is a thick, black outline to this nose, OK?

I think that the area covered by the outline could be the triangular area.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's in my brain now..."

Jack Dangers (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but then the triangular area IS your nose, surely?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If all goes according to plan, the triangular area around your nose is the vulva.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha DAN IS THE THREADKILLER)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i was trying to find some way to acknowledge/manouvre around dan's comment before saying:

yes, what archel said!

minna (minna), Monday, 19 May 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool. Yet another thread where the bloodthirsty hordes show themselves! (and yup, I've seen the doomed writhe in pain, once they pop a zit...)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 19 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, that post is boss. I tip my asshat.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 May 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i already made that joke!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 19 May 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody got it the first time. We're slow around here.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 19 May 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

bless both of your little 'tang-eating hearts.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 19 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd heard something similar to this theory, but I was under the impression that it was to do with the risk of pus getting in the corner of your eye if you popped a zit near there, and somehow getting through to your brain that way.

Very unscientific, I know, but maybe it was also to do with causing an infection there.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

We need more threads like this one.

John Justen, Monday, 13 August 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Heave Ho, Sunday, 26 August 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

My mom, she's so fucking obsessed with zits, blackheads, anything. She discusses others' zits heavily, but she always had this idea that she had free range over her children's acne. Literally chasing us around the house until she could pin the offender to the bed and empty it out. Jesus Christ, I felt so bad for my poor brother, who had the worst acne of all of us. Whenever he got home from school it was time for a Benny Hill style chase scene. He got put on Acutane eventually, which DID have all the side effects like "suicidal thoughts," but he said even that was better than getting chased around by my mom.

She'll tell me about her new zit developments over the phone for christ's sake. One of her customers at Applebee's, who was a dermatologist, told her about a blackhead he removed from someone's forehead that was so big it had "branched off roots." Oh man did that stoke my mother's imagination. Any tiny blemish was an excuse to stop an extreme parasitic takeover, as she viewed it.

I could have sworn he was Roman.

And, according to REAL myth this does not create death...just drug addiction.
