you see a lot of them around these days...what do you think?

(i have thoughts on this but i don't want to influence responses one way or the other)

stephanie t (stephanie), Saturday, 17 May 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The only ones worth wearing.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like you Alex, but your narrow musical interests are beginning to make me think you are a nerd. I haven't been on this board long -- how long have you geekily fetishized this forgotten, relatively mediocre band?

Or relatively good band... same difference. Fan boys are fan boys, and they invariably annoy.

Not to start a fite or anything. Not like I could change your mind anyway, or even begin to penetrate your stony, Killing-Joke-colored facade.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ur.... ok, I'm leaving this joint for a while. Let me know when the blood is all cleaned out.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

So the rule is, ignore the Alex uber-geek factor, or be damned? Why should I?

Look... I'm not taking the piss here. I've put in some time on ILX, and most of you know I'm not an idiot. I'm only wondering whether...

Well, I guess I'm wondering about the virtues of fandom. I don't see any at all. Many many do. This criticism could be equally directed at BurmaKitty, or even Ned and his whole MBV thing. These are good people, and good bands. But the state of mind that leads someone to honor one fire over all others is baffling to me. The world is FULL of music!

So my question to Alex could be better phrased as, do you love music, or do you just love Killing Joke?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

*pause*

Once again... call me when the blood dries.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

< /flippant> OK...

So, Kenan, you're telling us you've never been a fan of anything before?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Or more to the point.. you've never gotten anything out of being a fan of anything?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

you've never gotten anything out of being a fan of anything?

christ, i'm a total fanboy most of the time but the answer to this question, beyond "having the pleasure of experiencing whatever the hell i'm a fan of", the answer is SWEET F A

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok come on, guys, you're kinda missing some obvious things here...

Sure, one's degree of fandom can be seen as extreme to some, but I think fandom or over-indulgence relating to something -- artist, food type, magazine, anything -- has a lot of abstract beneficial side-effects, such as the skills to understand the mechanisms of said thing inside and outside, the skills to (often) intelligently discuss said thing's impact on oneself, the skills to speculate over minute details.... aside from skills, I think all people need a vent for some form of passion, and I think fandom like this (again, which may seem too extreme to some) is an otherwise healthy outlet... whether it's cars, vacuum tube equipment, fine wines, or Killing Joke.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget about t-shirts and newsletters

oops (Oops), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

and don't forget the diminishing returns

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry if I'm being defensive... it's not exactly a secret that fanboy-ism is/has been a common attribute of mine. But this type of argument against people who are really into a certain thing just reminds me of the anonymous jocks in high school who said similar things to the geeks, only to grow up the rest of their lives never having too many deep thoughts about anything... or even worse, pretending to not have any deep thoughts.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So my question to Alex could be better phrased as, do you love music, or do you just love Killing Joke?

Didn't realize you were such an utterly humorless grouch, Kenan. Not to put too fine a point on it, but my tastes are reasonably wide and varied (despite some firmly held opinions and stubborn convictions) and my thoroughly embarassing cd collection (now over the 2500 mark) ought to suggest as much, but I also happen to quite like Killing Joke. Moreover, I know my constant invokations of their good name upset surprisingly uptight folks like yourself, so you should probably expect a lot more of it in the future.

how long have you geekily fetishized this forgotten, relatively mediocre band?

Probably since about 1984 or so, but to call them a "forgotten, relatively mediocre band" does them a woefull disservice (especially on the eve of their next album, due in July).

Shove it!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm about to retire here right now, so I didn't want to get into anything too heated.. but "Shove it!" doesn't even begin to describe my reaction to anything as condescending and antagonistic a query as "how long have you geekily fetishized this forgotten, relatively mediocre band?". "Eat the peanuts out of my shit, asshat" is more like it.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think fandom like this (again, which may seem too extreme to some) is an otherwise healthy outlet... whether it's cars, vacuum tube equipment, fine wines, or Killing Joke.

You're right. Everything you said is exactly right. And I know this... I'm a fan of a lot of stuff, like, as in, fanatic, or borderline, anyway.

What got me going, I guess, is that I haven't even been here that long, but whenever I see Killing Joke, I see Alex, and by now it's so unbelievably crushingly eye-bleedingly OBVIOUS that I want to hit my head against something. It's silly fetishism at this point. The fact that he picked a relatively unknown band and not U-fucking-2 doesn't make him much different from an ardent nutso sobbingly devoted U2 fan.

Sorry Alex. It's not personal. I just don't like gimmicks, is all.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Or maybe it is personal. I hate it when people say "it's not personal" when it really is.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And I do dearly apologize for the sloppy over-use of adverbs. It's late.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, I certainly FELT like saying something harsher than "shove it," but I don't want to presume Kenan is just being a cock-smokin' ass fascist. Please DO hit your head against something then, Kenan.

And just to prove to you that I do indeed listen to other bands, I've "select all'd" the mp3s here on my work computer....lemme know if this is varied enough for you.

I never doubted your tastes. Just your party line.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Although from this evidence Killing Joke fans listen to a lot better music than U2 fans.

Just in case you guys need it later : http://www.eaglesflight.com/programs/ruler.jpg

jonas lefrel (jonas lefrel), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

As I was invoked above -- I'm not listening to or obsessing over MBV 24/7 and never have. They are a band I do talk about because they still provide pat but perfectly correct answers to questions like 'fave band ever?' or the like. If that bugs, er, okay then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I understand Ned. I'm not bugged by you. I was trying to use you to soften my argument against Killing Joke/Alex. (didn't work.)

*calming down*

I'm sorry. That could have all come off a lot better. I just don't understand long-term fandom is all. I've loved a lot of bands in my life, but I've always moved away from them. The bands I've loved the most, I've always eventually outgrown (except for maybe The Smiths). I've gotten older and, as you say, grouchier, and I turn a critical eye to everything nowadays. Most albums I don't listen to more than a couple times. At this point, I've heard so much music that it's like, "got it, got it, got it, got it..." Not that it's tedium, I love every minute, but I don't develop from-afar crushes anymore. I don't have the TIME for that kind of thing. Gotta move on, more music to hear...

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I had something to say here but I'm too distracted by listening to the new Spiritualized album over and over again.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

To each their own, Kenan. Just don't expect to toss words like "geek" and "nerd" around without expecting a little vitriol in return.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not a big Killing Joke fan but the fact that Alex likes them so much is actually really endearing to me--I'm a big fan of geekiness, of people who are adamantly and unashamedly interested in certain things without being scary about it. Also, part of the fun of being on ILx is exaggerating certain personality traits for fun/the hell of it. It can certainly be a problem if other people are doing it to you but if you're doing it to yourself what's the harm?

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotta move on, more music to hear...

Okay, with these exceptions:

The Smiths
The Clash
The Pixies
John Coltrane
Talking Heads
and lately:
Interpol
Manitoba
and on
and on
and on

Look, I like a lot of stuff, alright? Like it a lot. But I don't name drop the same damn thing every chance I get. Cause that would be, you know, tiresome.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the harm?

None at all, I guess. Just bugs me. Don't care about Killing Joke.

Maybe I should start mentioning Meat Beat Manifesto on every third thread. Then I could have a charming quirk, too.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Cause that would be, you know, tiresome.

Fuckin' bite me, man. If you spend half as much time as you say you do reading ILM, you'd see that I weigh in on a lot of threads without ever mentioning K____g J__e.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm... sorry. God, I really am grumpy, aren't I? Going to bed now.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

If you spend half as much time as you say you do reading ILM

Is that a challenge to read MORE ILM? Are you trying to get me fired?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But any demonstration of wider taste by that whole list of MP3s is undermined by the inclusion of Sting

Bob Six (bobbysix), Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

BUT ARE 1" BUTTONS FUCKING CLASSIC OR NOT?!?

oops (Oops), Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic if sported with subtlety and finesse. Having too many of them defeats the purpose, it seems to me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to wear a good few of these back in the late '70s. I've hardly worn any since.

haha, I even made my own when I became the first person in the 300 years of my school to stay on for the Oxbridge entrance and not be made a prefect. It read "why aren't I a prefect?" and I was offered an interview with the headmaster, as I had a right to an explanation. I declined, as the badge was just stirring - that fact going some way to an answer in itself.

***Many hours later***

Wow. I was a dick last night. This is going to sound like an excuse, and I guess technically it is, but I hadn't eaten since lunch. You see right at the end there when I get all contrite? That's mid-hamburger.

Sorry Alex.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There's really not that much difference between Brak and the Cocteau Twins, if you think about it.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! crazy flame thread disguised by mildly boring title!

*hides fan-girl tattoos from meanie Kenan*

buttons - they are cute though I don't wear them on my person. I have a couple of sleater-kinney ones on my Emily Strange purse -- tru ri0t grrl style boyee! Other lil' buttons I'll stick on lampshades and the like. My leopard Hello Kitty sitting on the TV sports a Kodiaks 1"er. It suits her.

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I have one 1" button, from a band called The Conversation. I usually wouldn't pick up promotional trash at a show, but they really impressed me. Big loud emo punk a la Jawbreaker. And the button is cool.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

so i am the only one who feels they are a little too base? i.e. too overt, trying too hard? like, "look at me, look at me, i like cool bands. i'm cool."

1" buttons : bedford ave as
"My child is an Honor Student" bumperstickers : suburbia

stephanie t (stephanie), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I never knew ILx hosted so many hataz!

I love buttons, stickers, t-shirts etc. not to promote my own coolness but out of support of the bands I love! Most of the promo stuff I sport is of bands who are my friends and whom I love so I think it's cool!

Obv., if you worry that other people will think you are trying too hard then you are.

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

that girl: touche.

supporting bands you love is always good in my book, esp. your friends' bands. i guess i have just meant a few people who wear them solely as fashion accessories...

stephanie t (stephanie), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy K.: Too cool!! I never knew there were MFA buttons.

I still have my Whammy Cloth. Unfortunately, my ID card got stolen along with my wallet in the early 90's :(

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Super Furries button on my work bag. I agree with the notion that they're classic when depicting stuff you genuinely like/support, and dud when used as random "flair".

Poppy (poppy), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I had buttons back in high school, but now the only one I have is my "Blondie is a Group" pin. Last time I wore it out someone asked if they could take a picture of it!

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

button collections are soooo emo

Maria (Maria), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a dick last night. This is going to sound like an excuse, and I guess technically it is, but I hadn't eaten since lunch. You see right at the end there when I get all contrite? That's mid-hamburger. Sorry Alex.

No worries, Kenan. For a start, I wasn't as awake as I might've otherwise been (despite being on duty) and could've reasoned/explained m'self better (sorry bout the "shove it" bit). Moreover, you invariably do have a point. I saturate ILM with Killing Joke propaganda to the point of utter nonsensical ludicrosity (is that a word? It it isn't, it fuckin' should be!) Of course I like and adore other music, other artists, other genres, etc. What a drab, stalky weird life I would lead if I didn't. I just do happen to get a big bang out of Killing Joke -- in all sincerity, few other bands have affected me as palpably. But, indeed they are veterans of another age...and while I will certainly crow from the highest possible rooftops of the majesty of the mp3 from their forthcoming record that was just leaked to me from their new album (Ally's heard it!), I can understand how it might give someone a big ol' migraine. Apologies for that. The bottom line: don't take me too seriously.

There's really not that much difference between Brak and the Cocteau Twins, if you think about it.

I soooo want that inscribed on a t-shirt.

I still collect 1" buttons by the way, and have drawers and cork-boards full of'em. Don't find m'self wearing'em as much, as there's precious few things sadder than an aging Johnny Fanboy who is desperately attempting to still resemble the cutting edge of hip (hello, midlife crisis). But, if I'm at a show and see them for sale, I'll always go look and will invariably pick up one or two. Just `cos.

Right...off to a wedding now.

Joke 2003 (vassifer), Saturday, 17 May 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

CHAKI buttons, people. Totally classic. Though I must admit that I still have nice feelings towards my "Dinosaurs Against Extinction" button.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 17 May 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Chaki buttons rule most mightily.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 May 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Buttons on bags are cool, buttons that say bizarro things are also rox0r. But for some reason when I see someone in a blazer jacket or bomber jacket wearing band buttons or political ones, I can't help thinking of Rik from the Young Ones, which is Not Good.

I still love a button I had in the mid 80s - it said "I hate Culture Club". I bought it and wore it obsessively because all my schoolmates loved Boy George, and I wanted to piss everyone off.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 18 May 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I confess to wearing a "Darth Vader Lives!" button through a worryingly large part of my grade school years.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 May 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Small problem....literally and figuratively....about 1" buttons is that you really have to get up close to read them most of the time. So, in order to impress upon someone whatever band/cause/issue you happen to be espousing, they have to get right up in your facial airspace to be in proper lapell-examination proximity. If no one can actually read the button your sporting....what's the point?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 May 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm now going to go start a hardcore band called L.E.P. (Lapell Examination Proximity).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 18 May 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Jel, I've got one of those Lego Club badges!

mei (mei), Sunday, 18 May 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i have one w. a picture of cameron bain & it says I ♥ CAMERON BAIN

duane, Sunday, 18 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hehe, looking at this from the New Answers I thought it'd just like provoked a really detailed debate about the merits of 1" buttons or something.

I've got a badge saying 'badges are for cunts', but that's about it. Understandably.
