Let us talk about how great she is, how much we are like her, how much we *want* to be like her, etc.

Weird fact: the company that produces Emily is run by one of the guys from Mirza / Thuja.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 17 May 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what Mirza is but I'll take yr word for it.

Obv. this rocks:

Mirza (by Ned).
That does rock.

I'm a little worried that Emily is reaching saturation point, my wife really loved the stuff four years ago but now that it's everywhere its losing its specialness. Also, she seems to have gotten tamer in some respects; some of the early shirts had a harder and more bitter tone to them (granted we haven't really examined the latest ones but that was the general feeling we had).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what or who you are talking about => not saturation point yet. (Maybe saturated in the US, poss.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never bought any Emily stuff. I've only ever received it as gifties from boyz. Therefore I have lots of Emily stuff and encourage any interested boyz to continue the tradition.

Martin,
feel the love

That Girl (thatgirl), Saturday, 17 May 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

she is copping the white stripes style!!
i really enjoy emily the strange. my gf loves the stuff and owns a bunch of it. first thing she ever got was a bumper sticker that she put on my car, the car was wrecked that night. i blamed emily.

kephm, Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

& akm, i will have to find/dl some mirza.

kephm, Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

More Mirza, by me. Stephen R. Smith's solo stuff is also the roxors.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 May 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought the picture disc of this solely because it looked so good. I don't actually have anything to play vinyl on...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 17 May 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

emily stuff is dumb dude. you're dumb if you buy that crap.

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a friend named Emily in college who looked just like this.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Whenever I hear Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play", I think of this silly girl staring blankly off the breasts of some Hot topic girl's t-shirt. It is not really congruous with the song's imagery. "She's often inclined to borrow somebody's dreams 'till tomorrow..."

Fivvy (Fivvy), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Every girl named Emily I know owns some kind of Emily merchandise (t-shirt, day planner, etc.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What's interesting is that -- unless I'm mistaken -- Emily is a character who serves no other purpose than to appear on her own brand of merchandise. She's not from anywhere else, like a cartoon or a children's book (though she could easily have been an Edward Gorey creation). Is Hello Kitty like this, too?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

She's not Gorey. Indeed she is like a Sanrio character. The books they make about her gorgeous though. Nice little coffee table things. Oh and there's also a female skate team under her name.

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 19 May 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I fell conflicted about Emily. It makes me happy in a kind of first grade "omg she's just like me!" way to see a shirt that says "Emily isn't lazy, she just likes doing nothing" with a girl lazing around with her three cats, but the stuff leaves this kind of nauseous after-feeling, a nauseous, gothy mall-punk feeling. I still like the hoodie with ears.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 18 July 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I am an Emily who only owns Emily stuff because it's my name, also. I have a neat purse and I want the hoodie with ears but it's not in my Big Yearly Budget (in which my summer job, and a little work study, are going to pay for the year's books and expenses). I don't really like the shirts though, I am not a rebel.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 18 July 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Neither are the people you see wearing the shirts. It's like Slipknot merchandise for girly girls. Eugh.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 19 July 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Emily is, to the best of my understanding, an American grrl attempt to cash in on the Hello Kitty phenomenon.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

huell howser (chaki), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I am currently wearing Emily socks. BUT! Only because they happened to be red and black stripey sox, in the sock shop... wasnt til after I bought em I noticed the Emily logo on the packet. Its not like theres emily faces on my feet or anything.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Ah! I was wondering whether Trayce would make an appearance on this thread. We all KNOW, Trayce, that you are NOT a GOTH.

moley (moley), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

My green pants and blue jacket give you the middle finger, matey ;P

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

These are Dandy Goth colours.

moley (moley), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

For proof - see Willy Wonka.

moley (moley), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

The problem with emily stuff is most of the kiddies wearing it seem to think that weird is cool, therefore because emily is weird, if i wear it i'll seem weird and then i'll be cool.

I fucking hate emily the strange crap. It's incredibly lame.

Oh Lord, My God, is there no help for the widow's son? / Kate (papa november), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Does it make you feel strange and cool?

Oh Lord, My God, is there no help for the widow's son? / Kate (papa november), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

emily's no lenore (or even oopsy daisy for that matter)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

Jim sitting on the money square and true.

And even Lenore, dearly as I love her, is getting a tad cliched.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Does it make you feel strange and cool?

No, but it does keep the water from getting on my bathroom floor.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, I'd feel a bit strange if a little 5 year old goth girly was staring at my wang in the shower each morning.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

so would i, inasmuch as you don't have a wang?

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

You seem very sure of this!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

er, well yes i am!

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

(unless you've grown one recently!)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Hehhehehe.

*checks pants just to be sure*.

Nope, all good.

I do not like this one bit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Strange#Origin_in_Other_Works :

Although the Emily the Strange character dates from 1991, the 1978 children's book Nate the Great and the Lost List features a similar young girl named Rosamond. Like Emily, Rosamond has long black hair and a short black dress, white mary jane shoes, four black cats of different sizes, and is frequently described as "strange." In particular, the text of Nate the Great introduces Rosamond: "Rosamond did not look hungry or sleepy. She looked like she always looks. Strange." An early Emily the Strange sticker has the text: "Emily did not look tired or happy. She looked like she always looks. Strange." Multiple sources have noted this overlap, but no official statements have been issued by any of the copyright holders involved.

My Daughter loves this stuff and has spent a fortune on bits and pieces, mainly posters, postcards and such.

She's called Emily by the way.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Saturday, 6 December 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I read every single Nate the Great book as a child, because they were fucking high caliber shit man. when emily the strange came out years ago, I thought it was cool in respect to Nate the Great but at the same time I was disappointed by the obvious ripoff... People don't understand how cool those books were. They were all detective books... And if I remember correctly, there was plenty of recurring characters and a dog named sludge.

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 6 December 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

Emily = Rosamond, by no mere coincidence

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 6 December 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

Rosamond was in almost every book.

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 6 December 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

She's called Emily by the way.

Emily By The Way! I love it! ;-)

StanM, Saturday, 6 December 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

Emily = Rosamond, only Rosamond = better drawn, more graphically appealing, less packaged, funnier, cooler, etc.

Suggest Ban Permalink (contenderizer), Saturday, 6 December 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

It's VHS and Betamax all over again!

StanM, Saturday, 6 December 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

I am privileged to be the current drummer of Emily's favorite band. The guy who draws her is really swell and invited us to his warehouse of Emily merchandise. Crazy amounts of stuff in there.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 7 December 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

BTW, my name is Nate and I totally read those Nate the Great books. I didn't recall the Rosamond/Emily similarity though. How strange.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 7 December 2008 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

rob reger created the emily brand off a sketch by Nate Carrico so I'm sure Nate Carrico had read Nate the Great books when he was a kid. I didn't know Reger was playing music now, what band?

akm, Sunday, 7 December 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think he plays music. But read what it says in the top right corner of this page: http://www.emilystrange.com/beware/contests/94TwoTonBoa.cfm

He's been very supportive, and wore our shirt to Comicon.
