(courtesy my sister: sorry I hadn't time to blue line them also... maybe someone not actually at work)

mark s, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, is that a hint you've dropped there Mark?

DG, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes DG! Get to it! No, not really a hint, just an apology for not doing it nicer myself.

btw i suspect the evening standard url shd just not have a linebreak/apologies also if any of these do not work

mark s, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, they've been tagged now, so click away, plebs.

DG, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn - you just beat me to it. Ignore my redundant info. Actually, you can drag that link into your FAVORITES folder, rename it, then use it on any page with a non-embedded address starting with "http://"

Alexander Cockburn's perspective

mark s, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stimulating analysis from Cockburn. The significance of Sept 11th as the anniversary of Bush seniors speach declaring war on Iraq had completely passed me by.

He's quite correct about the lame response of the Bush administration. The President gives the impression of a stunned man, hopelessly out of his depth, limply reading whatever his press secretary puts in front of him.

Here's one interviewing Arab-Americans in Queens.

Has anyone seen any adequate coverage of the Pittsburgh crash?

TV was reporting at one point that this flight had 'an encounter' with US air force jets before going down. Strong implication: it was shot down rather than be allowed to continue to its target.

But this story has been, as far as I can see, stifled since.

Link on WTC architectMino ru Yamasaki

Guilliani just says they will rebuild, unclear if it's development of area or rebuilding WTC.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this report suggests 3 of the passengers overpowered the hi-jackers:

http://www.msn.co.uk/exredir.asp? STARTID=NIP_01&adgroup=UKMCH2&URL=http://www.msnbc.com/news/627214_asp .htm

scott, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as that link doesn't seem to work:

"ONE MAN ABOARD United Airlines Flight 93 called an emergency dispatcher from a bathroom using a cell phone. “We are being hijacked, we are being hijacked!” he declared before the plane crashed outside Pittsburgh. A senior U.S. intelligence official told MSNBC.com that mobile phone communications from Flight 93 indicate that three passengers overpowered the hijackers but were unable to maintain control of the plane. The official said that U.S. counterintelligence experts are speculating that the hijackers intended to turn the plane around and crash it into another target but were thwarted by the passengers. One of those passengers is reported to have called his wife and told her of their plan to take control of the jet from the terrorists."

scott, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This link should work

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is a very interesting aspect of the story. I share the geezer Momus's sense of mystery about the Pittsburgh plane. At one stage yesterday it looked like a plane would have to be shot down (and who would take the decision? - etc). This story re. heroic passengers (who had cottoned on to the damage the plane was going to do to the USA?) is cool, but by the same token seems a bit dubious. Could it be US propaganda? And just what is the Christian Science Monitor?

CSM = widely respected journal (eg by Chomsky), relatively independent of mainstream politics

ie not some nonsense moonie pamphlet

mark s, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the CSM is one of the few papers most politcal stripes agree on. Its small and deals with anaysis mostly.
