'Swiss Miss'

I used to watch this in the library of the college where my mom taught, on days when I didn't have school and she couldn't afford a babysitter. They had it on 8mm. They also had a few "Little Rascals" shorts and Donald Duck in Mathmagicland.

My dream vacation place for the longest time was MATHEMAGICLAND. Though all I remember about it now is the square roots joke.

I bet they've tossed out all those 8mm films now, bastards. Mathmagic Land is genius.

I wish. (Hm, no, well I'll take the creative genius part and leave the incurable depressive part.)

From "Laurel &Hardy" by John McCabe & Al Kilgore, 1975:
One of Swiss Miss's highlights - carrying the piano across the Alpine gorge - is manifestly hilarious but because of inexplicable studio interference part of the sequence does not make sense. As originally conceived by Stan, a bomb was planted in the piano by the chef who, jealous of Anna's husband, hoped to finish him off by triggering the bomb to explode when a certain key was struck. It was planned that the many twistings and turnings of Stan, Ollie and the gorilla, especially the intoxicated falls of Stan against the keys, would add strength to an already suspenseful scene. For some incredible reason during the editing (Stan was not consulted), the bomb footage was removed, and the scene in its present form contains meaningless shots of Stan crashing against the keys.

Hope that makes everything clear. Perish the thought that any of Stan & Ollie's scene should not make sense.
