Skateboarding poser

That's me, the skateboarding poser. I need some exercise, and months of playing Tony Hawk 4 on Playstation 2 has convinced me that I can skateboard, so on my birthday, I went and bought a skateboard. Surprise, surprise, turns out I suck. I mean, I used to skate in high school, but that was like 8 years ago and I sucked then too. I can kind of coast down the street until I hit a crack and go flying off into the air. I can ollie about 50 percent of the time if I'm standing perfectly still. That's the extent of my skillz. So who wants to give me tips? What are other easy things I can learn to do? How can I not fly off the skateboard whenever I hit a crack in the sidewalk?

From my experience, most people who take up skateboarding only ever manage to do a few basic tricks (e.g. ollies) and nothing more, no matter how much they practice.

GYGAX! TO THREAD!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It was Tony 2 that did it for me.

Gave up the real stuff soon enough, I like my fingertips too much.

mei (mei), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

skate for awhile then stop and lift the board up in the air, keeping the back foot on. now jump on the board. you just did a "boneless"!! look you're already like 100% better!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm not trying to do any hardcore tricks or anything, I mainly just want to be able to cruise around and not look like an idiot. Appearance is my only concern.

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I still own my Christian Hosoi - Hammerhead board. It rocks. I haven't stepped foot on it in 10 years.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 19 May 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a luminous green board with an ogre on it.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 19 May 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i have some very large 3/4 length shorts with too many pockets => i am sk8r boi

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 19 May 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I just realized I should have said "have" instead of "has" in my original post. And "skyllz" instead of "skillz."

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sk8ter boiz are HOTTT. I'm not gonna watch Nick skate until he's really really good so he can take my breath away and stuff.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My advice:

#1 Listen to "The Shredder" by Little Wings (written for guys like you)

If you are doing this for the love of skateboarding then forget how you look/your appearance and just have fun. I think it would be hard to get better worrying about how you look. Work on your balance because ultimately that's going to assist in having the most fun, whether pulling off a trick or avoiding falling on your face when your front wheels lock in a crack (keep your weight on your rear foot, or learn how to mongo).

If you're serious about more complicated tricks you're going to need a lot of patience and realize that you will get hurt and not to be scared of that. Learn how to fall without extending your arms out or back so that your radii, ulnas or wrist bones don't snap... most common injury. Rolling is key, your fleshy parts (shoulder and ass) are your body's best cushions. If you start to sketch out in a trick (sooner or later you'll realize you're gonna need a lot of speed to pull off a lot tricks), have a bail out planned.

The older you get, the harder it is to recover from injury so staying healthy is key. I've seen a lot of older guys (haha) in their late 20s get back into it only to get hurt and then rethink their intentions. I have been hurt more than anybody I know so persistence is also key.

For practical ollies you will need some speed to get up curbs without stalling or slowing down. Practice adjacent to some grassy area until you get confident enough.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

TV's Simon Pegg has never bothered about looking good and see what a heart throb he is today eh young er... NA! Mm TV's Simon Pegg although the new husband list candidate is Nick Frost AKA Mike from Spaced/Movie Mistakes Uncovered Uncut or whatever on earth it was called.

Also RickyT to thread!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. I am old, and I don't want to mess up my hands or face (that's how I make my $$$), so I'm not going to do anything too crazy. Sarah, I don't know who those people are as I live in the verdant valleys of the US of A.
How do I work on my balance? Just practice? I think that's a major problem right now.

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that's how I make my $$$

???????????????????????

Nick, you're a model?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Just start boarding to the shops an ting. You will pick up the fancy stuff as you go along (also bruises)! Avoid large trousered groups of surly yoof.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I ph34r it may just be me who thinks TV's Simon Pegg is num num.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You could also work on pumping through your turns, by weighting and unweighting. Eventually you'll be able to pump up to speed on a flat road from a near-standstill.

This skill is also key once you hit the banks or pools. For visual aid, check out Steve Caballero in some of those early Bones Brigade videos. His weighting & unweighting is very visible, whether he's riding the streets, the banks or the vert, and it's powerful and smooth.

Of course, somewhat loosened trucks and wheels that are less than brick-hard help with this.

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Monday, 19 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

NA. you know how to "tic tac" right?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 May 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean where you just kinda skitch the front of the board back and forth to speed up? Yeah. Though I kinda forgot about it.
I wish I lived somewhere hillier.

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, unweighting should help you with those cracks in the road. So, assuming you're riding with knees slightly bent, just unweight the board slightly as you go over the crack (this is almost like a mini-hop from the deck).

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Monday, 19 May 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly, NA.!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 May 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This is very funny, I was just about to start a thread exactly like this.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 19 May 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Since you have only been doing ollies while standing still, don't forget to, you know, jump forward to meet up w/yr board when ollie-ing on the go. Am I the only one who didn't realize this for a week or more?

oops (Oops), Monday, 19 May 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm forming the Lame-Ass Poseurs Skate Crew. Does anyone want to join?

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

OK. I see how it is. I'll just be a crew of one.

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say it was a redundant name since it describes every skate crew that doesn't include Tony Hawk.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

LAPS Crew reprazent!

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll join your crew, NA, if you'll take me, but we'll need to have really lame-ass nicknames. Can I be "Bonzy"?

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be 'Woozy' and my signature trick will be the Face Plant.

oops (Oops), Monday, 19 May 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the Velvet Fog and my signature moves are the Awkward Transition and that thing where you flip your skateboard up into your hands. I'm sponsored by Trigon Health Insurance.

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 19 May 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought a skateboard a couple of years ago, and I, too, am pathetic and sucky at it. Don't care, though. I feel so good going up and down the street on it when the weather's just right. Someday before I die I hope to learn how to pop from the street to the curb and nosegrind a bit but if it never happens I don't suppose I'll go the grave feeling unfulfilled.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

start practicing grind and doing ollies while moving

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheap thrill: get a pair of copers for yr trucks and do sidewalk-edge grinders. Pretend you're grinding along the coping of a backyard pool in Santa Monica, Jay Adams-style (rent "Dogtown & the Z-boys" for reference).

More cheap thrills: try to find some banked paved surface somewhere. Prime candidates: schoolyards, drainage ditches. Practice kick turns, carves, and slides on those banks. Don't forget to spraypaint "Velvet Fog Shredz" and "Lame-Ass Poseurs RULE!" on said surfaces at end of session.

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I had an epiphane yesterday when I realized that it's easier to skate in the street than on the sidewalk. I am now the world's greatest skateboarder.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Soon to be the worlds flattest skateboarder if any cars don't agree with your opinion.

Skating + only being concerned about how you look = recipe for disaster on so many levels....

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a possibility you're reading NA a bit too literally on the "concern with looks" front, Mark.

And a street with low traffic volume beats a sidewalk for learning AND safety anyday (car can always pull out of a driveway without warning, you know).

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, by looks I mainly meant looking comfortable and not like a totally spastic idiot as opposed to wanting to look sexxxy or whatever. But then again, my looks are how I make my money.
My neighborhood has lots of side streets with low traffic, so that's where I'm hangin' out until I am past my embarassment.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shredder

The sturdy ramp is made of gold
And all our weight it's sure to hold
Our driveway ends down at the street
Out where the shredder can't be beat

I practice moves out in the yard
That way the landings aren't so hard
You've seen it in a magazine
It's not as easy as it seems

They filled the pool the other day
When all the neighborhood complained
It's just a quarter after three
And there's nowhere we've got to be

Down at the ditch beneath the sun
The shredder takes another run
My heart is free to ride away
Were you expecting it to stay?

When your ball bearings rust
You'll eat my dust
Call It a favor
Sooner or later
You're gonna fall

Shredder Sequel

The shredder skateramp will be spared
But he'll have to cut his long hair
And the tennies that he used to wear
Will soon be replaced by two soles made of air

And though it's just been a short while
His maneuvers have gone out of style
His shorts are too short yeah for sure
He was wild but the kids today laugh when they see

That the shredder is not what he was
His buddies believe it's because
The last spill left him shook up
He's had enough
"Concrete's unkind" he sadly sighs
Behind the wheel of his hatchback he cries

"All of my buddies have fled
And now it's alone that I shred
I drive along everyday
Listening to music I already have in my head

These cul de sacs still have their way
To my heart at the end of the day
And I act like I don't hear a thing
When I ride past the parking lot I hear them say:

'The shredder is not what he seems
When he's frightened he casually leans
He'll knock all the skin off his knees
Right before he
Brushes the dirt
'That doesn't hurt'
But he has tears in his eyes when he sleeps.'"

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(that's "Shredder" and "Shredder Sequel" by Little Wings)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Shredder" is actually the only Little Wings song I can remember from that cd, but somehow I never made the connection that it was about skateboarding. I guess I never listened to the lyrics. But that song is good, it has fingersnaps in it.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

twenty-one years pass...

Want to start skateboarding again. Be known as that old guy skating around the neighborhood on weekends. Got in an accident and is in stable condition at County
