ITunes Visualizer-Classic or dud? (or we can just talk about iTunes 4)

I know it's just crap, but I really WANT to like it. There is a greater variety of patterns this time around.

Despite my initial scorn for iTunes 4, I like importing an image and watching it flash up with each song...thinking of using "mood" images (tumbleweed for Calexico, booty for Ludacris) instead of cover art, though...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean you don't have an informed opinion on iTunes visualizer?

FOR SHAME!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. serious question. What's all this about iTunes sharing in Kazaa stylee?

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know. Ed?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I find the visualizer too dangerous to switch on. I have spent whole evenings HYPNOTIZED by the thing.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's for cyber-hippies.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there an OS 9 version of itunes 4?

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"The man who asked if there was an OS 9 version of itunes 4"

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing beats the old "Satori" screensaver!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

" 'The man who asked if there was an OS 9 version of itunes 4' "

yes?

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a cartoon title.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

but what's the cartoon's punch-line?

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a visual gag.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there an OS 9 version of OS X?

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Its called OS 9.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ANYWAY. Should I bother updrading from iTunes v.3. How is it better, visual gags apart?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

you can play my choones, and those of anyone who's online using iTunes 4. You can see my playlists, and we can reveal unto the world the horror of our music collections.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think iTunes is kind of crap for actually playing music. I find the "Library" and "Playlist" features especially difficult to use. The names of songs in iTunes aren't the same as their respective filenames, so if you've become familiar with the name of a file you look in your iTunes Library and at first it seems like it's not there. And changing the order of the songs in my playlist appears impossible - dragging one to a new position doesn't work.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I turned on the visualizer thing once for about 10 seconds.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart iTunes - the bestest piece of software I ever did see or use.

Visualizer is rubbish, though is slightly kewl if you make the visualisation your desktop picture whilst playing a song. But it eats resources so starts to pall. Though there are better visualisation plug-ins out there.

I thought this was only if you 'hacked' it (I am relying on newspaper reports here so forgive me if that's totally wrong).

Mentalist Tracer sez:

What? I thought it was kind of standard practice for mp3's to have crappy short filenames and have the full info embedded in the ID3 tags. What kind of madman only knows the 'filenames' of songs better than the names of the songs themselves?

And changing the order of the songs in my playlist appears impossible - dragging one to a new position doesn't work.

It... does work.

iTunes is the most intuitive, slick piece of software I've ever used. The search string box, with its instant, no return key needed set of results, is especially wonderful. The only annoying thing is when one wants to import one track from a CD - one has to uncheck all the others individually. There ought to be an 'uncheck all' option.

Having tried the incredibly fiddly, multi-window WinAmp on a PC, I am v.grateful for iTunes.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"The only annoying thing is when one wants to import one track from a CD - one has to uncheck all the others individually. There ought to be an 'uncheck all' option."

You can just drag that one file into a playlist and it imports it.
no need to hit import button.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Command-click should do it.

Phil (phil), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for both those of those tips, fellas. (it doesn't have to be a proper playlist, thankfully, just the Library will do it). Good. iTunes is now pretty much perfect. Err.. except it could have more sophisticated CD burning features (esp. variable track gaps).

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The names of songs in iTunes aren't the same as their respective filenames, so if you've become familiar with the name of a file you look in your iTunes Library and at first it seems like it's not there.

Someone already mentioned it, but it bears repeating: You are weird if you know the name of a file but not the name of a song.

Anyway, the one thing I want out of iTunes is a way to select a song to play (either in the library or in a playlist) and then play just that one song, once, without having to "find" its name or anything like that. Is there a tip for that?

The other thing I want is to have one smart playlist exclude songs that are in another playlist. I haven't seen if iTunes 4 can do that yet.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Go to the library or playlist, hold down the Command (ie.Apple) key while clicking on the checkbox next to any of the songs. This will uncheck all the boxes. Then double click on the song you want to hear. As long as the 'repeat' button (bottom left, with the arrows forming a circle) isn't active (it's active when it's blue) then you should get what you need.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

heh i am weird, i use the finder for everything

i dunno, maybe my iTunes is on ver blink but i really can't rearrange the songs once they're in a playlist!

ALSO: if i double-click a song (IN THE FINDER hmm) to play it, once it's finished iTunes follows some kind of chronologic that only it knows as to what song plays next, it's diabolical!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

STOP USING THE FINDER TO PLAY MUSIC

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"except it could have more sophisticated CD burning features (esp. variable track gaps)."

Yeah, I've had troubles burning cds that have one song flow into another song where it isn't suppose to have a gap. itunes still gives it a short gap. It does have variable gap, but you can't do 0 gap.

It would also be nice to be able to burn enhanced cds or even just data cds.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought all MP3s had a small gap at the beginning unless edited.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

well, I mostly burn AIFF files

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhh. then I can not help you sir.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've had troubles burning cds that have one song flow into another song where it isn't suppose to have a gap. itunes still gives it a short gap. It does have variable gap, but you can't do 0 gap.

Jam (a stupid name if I do say so) can custom burn w/o gaps nicely.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, another stupid question, can you save playlists as individual files and import them onto someone else's itunes? (my gf's mac has a burner and mine doesn't) So far I have had to go and search all the individual mp3s, put them in a file, and then re-order them once I have transferred them.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

you can play my choones, and those of anyone who's online using iTunes 4. You can see my playlists, and we can reveal unto the world the horror of our music collections.

HEY! does anyone else who has iTunes 4 want to try this? Just so we can say we did...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
Help! All of the tracks on my iTunes have started to pop and crackle badly. It's not my speakers, as I have external speakers on which this also occurs. AND...some original MP3 files appear to have disappeared, leaving me with a fleet of "!" icons instead of a playlist. What is happening?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Could it be a Quicktime issue?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaah, this sucks. I can't listen to music like this (unfortunately this is the only means I have of listening to music at home).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

all of your music has been remixed by the warp roster.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno dude, I've never heard of this... hard disk corruption maybe? are you using filevault?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

what's firevault?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

filevault

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(I guess not)

it's this thing in panther that encrypts your home directory when you shut down your computer or put it to sleep... the early version of which was screwing everything up, notably itunes stuff.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I run Jaguar. pah.

Elvis Telecom, where are you?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you tried playing the files through a different player? might help identify the problem...

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

different? player? like Windows Media?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

something like that!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 December 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I get the (!) icon when I've downloaded songs but then deleted the original file from its folder.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 December 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

well that happened to me too - i just had to go thru all of the ! ones and use apple f to find them then relaunch them from the folder (by doulble clicking of course) a bit of a pain it was but there were only about 50 if them, so it wasn't too bad. it took 10 minutes. how many !'s do you have?

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 5 December 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I have fixed the !s, but still with the popping and the stuttering and the irritating...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@aml, try downloading Audion and playing your mp3s thru that. If they play without stuttering, a reinstall of iTunes and Quicktime might be in order. If they don't, yr mp3s may have been corrupted in some way, don't ask me how tho.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 5 December 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, retort pouch. I'll try it.

@d@ml nitr@te (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Got hold of Whitecap last Sunday and spent the next 3 hours just staring at it as it did its magic. It's amazing.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 5 December 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

OK, the iTunes visualizer's "jelly" setting is clearly trying to hypnotize me.
