"CIA are getting very close to finding out who is behind attacks - Bin Laden or one of his groups"

Graham, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So they say. I have my doubts.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow - it's true about that Arafat blood story. Remarkable.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with you Ned. I still wouldn't be surprised to find out the acts came from a completely unsuspected source.

Samantha, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh and Mitch I don't think anyone finds your questions juvenille.

Samantha, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The spin from the Palestinian Authority (separate from Arafat, let's say for the sake of argument) is interesting. Note here:

"Palestinian lawmaker Hanan Ashrawi told a news conference the celebrations were ``misguided'' and ``aberrations'' motivated by a feeling among Palestinians that they have been victims of U.S. backing for Israel."

A much more, dare I say, sensible expression of feelings -- there's still a clear belief that the US is at fault for a lot, but tempered with the realization that images of the celebrations just reduced potential public sympathy to a vast new low. It's a very fine line to tread, and I don't think they'll be able to keep on it.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually wondered last night if Giuliani, or even Bush, would give blood.

Officials estimate that hundreds of Britons have been killed (my sister has a friend who is still unaccounted for).

Madchen, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually wondered last night if Giuliani, or even Bush, would give blood.

Let's give Giuliani the benefit of the doubt and assume that he hasn't slept in about 36 hours, and has done so most of the time working through as much shock and horror as most of the people nearby who could talk about it have, since he was practically right there himself. Take any blood from the guy and he'd probably fall over.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not to mention that Giuliani CAN'T GIVE BLOOD - he has had medical procedures done to him this year, it's illegal for him to give blood!

How many of YOU have gotten off your asses and given blood today? I'm sorry to be curt and rude but there is only so much political bent arguing and nitpicking I can take when I'm sitting here watching an extremely distressed coworker try to find a missing friend. This is not the time to discuss things like this.

i'm only glad that NYers have poured out the way they have to help, there's a 6 hour wait on Amsterdam to give blood! And people are waiting!

Ally, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, Madchen, I'm going to apologize in advance, that wasn't really aimed at you, it's aimed at a general thing I've been getting all day, people bitching Arabs v. Israelis then people picking apart Republicans v. Democrats then there's another thread on this board that really is pissing me off re: this situation - don't take it personally, it wasn't aimed at you, it was venting.

Ally, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally, after everything you've been through and seen happen to others, nobody's going to blame you. *hugs*

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Radar pictures.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One of the worst things about the disaster - mentioned on Kilroy of all places: the most experienced doctors, firefighters etc were already on the scene dealing with it - when the towers collapsed. So they're gone. That really was terrible to hear - that these people who've given their lives to the public good could be wiped out just when they were most needed. Somehow this is as sad - tragic, even - as anything about the affair.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is not the time to discuss things like this.

I'm sorry, Ally, and I really hate that I've become the official bitch of the forum, but if this isn't the time to discuss those politics, then I really don't know when the fuck is. It's not as if our concern over the issue is at fever pitch when we're safe and happy.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have been in classes and working today, Nitsuh, but if not you certainly wouldn't have been the only board bitch.

Josh, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm amazed at how the plane crash footage gets MORE shocking and painful every time I see it, not less. So much for de-sensitization.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Although now that I've bitched, I suppose there is a solution to Ally's equally-reasonable statement: one thread for politics, one thread for news, one thread for personal lives?

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apologies all around for my pollution of all of these threads. I'm gonna do my best to stay quiet for a while -- I've said far too much. I must thank everyone around these parts as there aren't many places to lurk that don't offer many unsettling comments. The content on ILE has been far more beneficial to keep an eye on than mass media. No surprise, but it must be said.

Andy, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

View from 22,000 miles above the earth

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's OK Ally. For the record, I'd love to give blood but Brits aren't allowed because, as previously mentioned on ILE, I probably have mad cow disease due to being fed Brains Faggots as a child.

Madchen, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Any man who has had same gendered pentatrative sexual intercourse since 1977 cannot give blood "
Canadian Blood Center
That said i tried this morning and was turned away.
That and i do not belive at all that the people they have caught had much to do with the bombing.

anthony, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re: giving blood -

It's been suggested that folks make appointments to donate blood, given the HUGE donor response. It's also suggested that these calls are placed during off-peak hours (that is, early in the morning or later in the evening).

Personally, I think there's plenty of wiggle room in this topic (and this forum) to allow both political debates and eyewitness accounts and personal reflection and other such things. If anything, it allows folks a chance to take a breath and collect themselves in regards to this issue, whether they're @ Ground Zero (like Ally) or far, far, far away (like a good number of us). The sad fact is that most of us are powerless to do any to DIRECTLY affect any positive change in NYC or DC - in that light, talking about these events is extremely important.

PS - the Red Cross site is back online. The Red Cross is also taking monetary donations, along with other sites - Amazon, for instance. I believe PayPal is collecting donations as well.

PPS - I'd just like to also offer kudos to all of you other folks on ILE for providing some much-needed perspective on the well- intentioned sensational rhetoric offered by most news sources.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom E: what was that RADAR PICTURE (inserted with magnificent insouciance into the ongoing debate) meant to show?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

air update: Flights that were enroute and forced to land at the nearest airport will be allowed to fly. Airports will also be allowed to move empty planes but no new flights will commence for the time being.

Samantha, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey. Pity about those three lines at the bottom.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That was a reference to Billy D's link.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and ally .
we are all upset . NYC is a big place and almost everyone has someone they know and love are directly affected. i am sorry i made you angry with my last thread. But i do agree with Nitsuh, politics should be discussed. All that said i have been impressed with how well Gulliani and Bush have dealt with this.

anthony, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, what was *that* about? But a remarkable shot. 'Even from ---, it has no problem seeing', etc etc - crazee stuff.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, you know, I am all in favour of "No quarter. No mercy." etc. to the people who ACTUALLY DID IT. But the question is - how to do that? And it's not a question the more gung-ho elements of US opinion are, in their understandable anger, willing to ask too carefully?

Tom, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm. I'd guessing that all those fancy colors in Tom's pic are showing the dispersal of dust & smoke from the WTC collapse. I THINK that's what it is; I'd love to know more, though. The upper portion of that red/orange/yellow blob is smack dab over where I'm @.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the radar picture was supposed to show the size of the dust cloud produced.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

News says: >>> New York City is closed to the public south of 14th Street.

?? But - don't loads of the public live south of 14th street?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow. Amazon has collected over $800,000.00 in relief aid through their site.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks for the PayPal mention, I kept meaning to check...

*donates*

Done. Not much, but what you can do, you should do. Try and get an appointment, as mentioned, for blood donating; I've set one up myself.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David you're correct it does show the dust/smoke cloud.
Since yesterday was pretty much clear of cloud over Manhattan, the echoes aren't of raindrops. Radar sends out radiation in the 3 to 10cm wavelength, it then measures the 'power' returned by scattering from raindrops, the bigger the droplet the more power is scattered and hence returned. Because dust particles scatter more effectively than raindrops they show up as red's and oranges which you'd usually associate with heavy rain, hail or snow. Later images show the plume fading.
It's equivalent to the clutter dropped by aircraft which is used to jam radar.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Condolences to everyone who sees this who lost anyone.

dave q, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

disturbing reality alert:

i work for a university, and while taking my lunch today in the students lounge so i could watch the news witnessed two particularly chilling things...

number one: the VOCAL-ness of the (non-arab) students with open racism, jingoism, and sheer hysteria (one beautiful, preppy looking girl staring intently at the news and repeating, over and over, "we should just bomb all of afghanistan.") was disarming. half-truths, media disinformation, and good old fashion prejudice were flying all over the student union today as GOSPEL TRUTH, with the animus of their animosity directed towards...

number two: a small group of middle eastern/muslim students, shunted to one side, huddled around each other, a look of total panic in their eyes, with the eyes their fellow students trained on them, white and black and even asian. the air of paranoia, suspicion, and potential violence was rife, made all the more frightening by the blindingly beautiful day streaming in from outside.

so, while i agree that, in the face of it, the search and rescue and blood drive and donations are all more important in the immediate, the minute this occurred, it became a larger issue for a substantial number of people living in this country: middle eastern immigrants, important enough to call an emergency staff meeting this morning over possible student violence, extra polic, "tracking" foriegn students... if this is brewing at an "insitution of learning" (and if you knew the school i shill for, ha ha) then i'm really sickened to think of what's about to boil over elsewhere...

jess, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But - don't loads of the public live south of 14th street?

My girlfriend mentioned needing a copy of her apartment lease to enter her neighborhood, which is even north of Canal. So it seems possible that south-of-14th is being entirely closed off ...

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't quite believe it and I don't know when I will. The only thing that is grounding me in reality is a friend whose sister was supposed to be at the wtc; he can't reach her. I can't process the idea of this huge disaster occurring a few hours away from me and life going on as usual here except for some stuff on the news, some words over the intercom, and a few quietly worried people. It's so strange. I haven't seen any television since last night; I came on here first after getting home.

Mike Daddino's account was a wakeup...I am so sorry to all of you who have been hit so hard by this.

I'm underage to give blood. The Red Cross told the school that they need "juice boxes and individually wrapped crackers or cookies," though, so that's something to do.

maria, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if this is brewing at an "insitution of learning" (and if you knew the school i shill for, ha ha) then i'm really sickened to think of what's about to boil over elsewhere...

Anyone tries any of that crap where I work, where we've just hired a student of, I believe, Egyptian background, I'm going to take a distinct pleasure in finding new ways to rip them a new one with a friendly customer service smile on my face.

Feller who runs a good pizza place near here is of Iranian background. Went in today and did what you're supposed to do -- smile, be friendly, order and treat the guy fair. Simple as that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Defence Sec. Rumfeld (sp) and Att. Gen. Ashcroft just spoke in turn. They confirmed that 3-6 hijackers were on each plane and used box cutters, knives and threats of bombs. The white house and AF One were also intended targets. they believe the hijackers trained as pilots in the US including at a school in Daytona Beach.

Samantha, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nude Spock has spoken here. (phew)

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tried to give blood yesterday, but the two places I called took my name and told me that they'd get back to me. The wait was five hours long and they discouraged me from coming down.

Gonna try again after work, but even so, I'm still not clear about the gay thing. I can't seem to get an answer on this. What is the current US policy? Is it the same as the Canadian policy? Is it "don't ask don't tell"? I mean, yeah I've had sex since 1977, but I was HIV- the last time I was tested a year ago. Should I just lie? Don't they test all the blood they get? Anyone have any info on this?

Jess, that's frightening. So far, Guiliani is the only political leader who I've heard specifically mention the Middle Eastern community in America, saying that the New York government will not tolerate any persecution and the police will be there protect them. Agree w/ Tadeusz, Guiliani's really been remarkable through all this, from what I've seen.

Arthur, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe Rudy's just the type of guy who responds well to a crisis. I'm not complaining on that front.

Hurrah for Nude Spock!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone threw a Molotov cocktail in the window of an Arab school here. All Arab and Islamic schools are closed today because of the danger, so no one was hurt, but...I'm feeling the same violent rage toward these bigots that Ned is. I'll never forget during the Gulf War when a local business displayed t-shirts depicting caricatured "Arabs" getting bayoneted. I wrote them a hate letter and covered their window with anti-war and anti-racism stickers, and they took the shirts down. I should have thrown a rock in their window.

Kerry, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, Mayor Daley just spoke out against stereotyping and violence against Arabs.

Kerry, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A touch too late from Daley, but at least said. Here's hoping. *crossed fingers*

Ah, the world. How I loathe it sometimes.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anti-Arab racism hasn't seemed too bad at school today but I never see much...it's mostly white and Christian and there is a lot of ignorance but there has been no violence and not as much talk today. Many of us have been quick to jump on it at the start. I am appalled to hear about the things going on where you are, like the university, where things aren't as easily controlled.

maria, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There area a few threads on Metafilter showing & discussing anti-"Arab" graffiti / sentiment in various US locales.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no violence yet here, either *crosses fingers as well*...

...but in the greater philly area, already reports of vandalism, a gas station owned by an indian-american CITIZEN (of 14 years) was spray painted with "leave already fucker"...and the bile in me rises again...

jess, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hoo boy. One of those cases where you wish you could smack somebody but can't.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was talking to a kid today about the possibility of war, and he said he hopes it doesn't happen because he doesn't want to have to make the choice between finishing college and enlisting; he said something about "duty," and I was almost speechless. It was an incident that made me sad more than angry (like a lot of the stories you guys are recounting make me), and I didn't know what to say to him.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I meant to say that a lot of the stories you guys are telling are making me angry, in case that wasn't clear... sorry.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one beautiful, preppy looking girl staring intently at the news and repeating, over and over, "we should just bomb all of afghanistan

This sort of reaction really worries me. It seems Afghan = Taleban for most people. The world was up in arms when a couple of Buddhist statues were destroyed but I haven't seen much coverage of the repression of the Afghan people. My Mum's on the board of a charity which works with refugees and displaced peoples and one of the main countries they focus on is Afghanistan so I've heard many accounts of what's happening in the country. The Taleban are really, really not representative of what the general population think or believe. Until they came to power, women could have an education, go to work and were able to live independent lives. Now, they are not allowed jobs outside the home and cannot leave the home without a husband or close male relative. This means that widows and girl orphans in particular are desperately poor and with civil war ongoing in the country, there are many of them. The UN used to run widows' bakeries where women could be employed and find food, but even these have been forced to close. I'd be happy to see some kind of action against the Taleban, whether Bin Laden is behind what happened yesterday or not, but attacking them and not the ordinary people of Afghanistan would be extremely difficult.

Madchen, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I swear I'll shut the hell up after this one. Anyone else see the cover of the Coup record that was released yesterday?

http://www.girlieaction.com/coup/coup-cover-300.jpg

Andy, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No fucking way.

That sucker's coming off the 3 shelves it made it on ...

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ditto for this Dream Theater record sleeve, also released yesterday. Title: Live Scenes from New York.

http://www.realfx.com/dt.jpg

Andy, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and Arnie's new film Collateral Damage (bomber blows up skycraper) has been pulled from the release schedules.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Those guys careers just went up in smoke too.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apparently the Coup record was s'posed to come out in November -- so my bad. But still....

http://us.news2.yimg.com/f/42/31/7m/dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010912/ re/attack_album_dc_1.html

Andy, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know, I'd heard about the Coup cover, but I hadn't actually seen it. It heartens me the my first reaction was shocked laughter; this means that my normal reactions are beginning to reassert themselves.

One entertaining moment from last night: Joei was talking on the phone with a friend of ours from Brooklyn about how naming Bin Laden as the culprit seemed too pat and easy. Joei even made the comment, "Like the FBI hadn't tapped the phones of half the Arab population of this country months ago. Hell, they've probably tapped this phone, too!" At this point, I jumped up, ran over to her and started saying into the mouthpiece, "I love the FBI! The FBI is great! Go, FBI, go!" Both sides of the line began to crack up and some tension was relieved.

Then they showed the footage of the second plane again. Damn.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re Schwarzenegger - is 'True Lies' still in circulation?

dave q, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, I just read the story at the above link and am giggling again. Does anyone else remember that old Eddie Murphy skit from Saturday Night Live?

"C-I-L-L. My land-LORD."

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sure do, Dan. How's this--

"Dark and lonely on a summer night Cill my landlord, Cill my landlord The watchdog's barking, do he bite? Cill my landlord, Cill my landlord Slip into his window, break his neck Then his house I start to wreck Got no reason What the heck? Cill my landlord, Cill my landlord C-I-L-L my landlord"

by Tyrone Green

Arthur, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That Yahoo link doesn't work. The Coup's publicist circulated a statement this morning essentially, "Damn, we fucked up. Happened months ago, sorry!"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember in elementary school, when Sadam was the American enemy we cracked jokes about how Sadam backwards was Madass.

A guy I know who is keeping his juvenile sense of humor active said to me today: "Osama is angry because he hasnt Bin Laden a long long time"

I dunno. Thought I'd share.

Honda, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't forget to remove Greenspun-inserted spaces from links before copying them into the browser, y'all.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Perhaps unsurprisingly another building next to the WTC is collapsing, but they've evacuated all the rescuers.

Madchen, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's pretty well assumed that a friend of mine - a bike courier - was at the WTC (a frequent stop on his route, several times a day) at the time of attack. no word or contact. trying not to assume the worst, but it's looking grim.

jess, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

From the BBC website:

"What was interesting to note, however, was that monitoring company Keynote Systems reported a 10% decrease in worldwide network traffic immediately after the attack - which is quite phenomenal. The way I read that is that you can imagine all the people within hearing and seeing distance of the World Trade Center would rush away from their desks and actually go and see what's happening for themselves." (Bryan Porter, editor New Media Zero)

That's ludicrous - surely 10% of the world's internet users are not located within spitting distance of the WTC. Isn't it more likely to be a collapse in the telecoms network, broken cables etc?

Madchen, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a 10% decrease in worldwide network traffic immediately after the attack

Decrease in web use instead some people maybe switched to watching TV pictures?

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That was my thought. Many of the people I know who watched the collapse were also online and giving people real-time accounts of what was going on.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Likely scenario: switch to TV but also the fact that large no.s of websites went down very soon after. On what do keystone base their data? I'll try and pull off some data from our servers over the past few days when I get in tomorrow.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My girlfriend mentioned needing a copy of her apartment lease to enter her neighborhood, which is even north of Canal. So it seems possible that south-of-14th is being entirely closed off ...

Heading north today on foot I passed two police cordons, one at Delancey Street and one at 14th Street. You need a piece of paper with an address in the 'closed' area south of either of these to get back in. A check book with your address on it will do.

Other things I saw today: In Union Square there are flowers, peace grafitti and debates about retaliation going on, citizen to citizen. Police are controlling road crossings, their ears pricked for emergency vehicles which, of course, have priority. Below 14th there are no cars, and more children than usual are playing safely on the streets. On Orchard Street Muslims and Jews go about their business side by side as usual. Up 5th Avenue souvenir hunters are buying up all copies of postcards with the WTC on them. The New York Times, Time Out and the Village Voice are completely unobtainable. The Empire State Building has a one-block cordon around it.

PS: Has anybody heard of the band I Am The World Trade Center? They sound a bit like a lo-fi St Etienne. I don't think we'll be hearing from them again.

Momus, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I Am The World Trade Center website still up here.

Graham, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am the World Trade Centrelink here. What will they rename themselves then?

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rubble? (= Not a bad band name)

Apparently the remaining 7 floors just collapsed.

Graham, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they were schelduled to do a live show on the uga college station 90.5 tonight, and also play at the forty watt in like a month.

ethan, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apologies for my abscence everyone, my mum insisted I keep the phone line free cos my dad was supposed to (and did) come back from Copenhagen this evening and she wanted to know if there was any trouble. Cheers Graham.

DG, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some more thoughts:

I took the train into Rockville Centre to see my therapist today. RC is approximately 20 miles away from Manhattan, and about half-way between Bay Shore and Manhattan. There was one obvious sign of the tragedy -- a couple of businesses had flags in their windows where none were before. The thing is that from what little I saw of the town was that businesses with flags seemed to be grouped in little clusters, as if people were following their neighbor's cue. I don't know what to think of that. What's the flag situation elsewhere?

I handle our company's mailing list database (which, again, was not only part of a network-wide back-up, but was also given to our printer quite recently), so no doubt I'll be a key part in spreading the word to our clients about our current situation. Our of a database of six thousand, I'd say about fifty to a hundred contacts were from people in the WTC. They'll all have to be re-addressed, of course, but...in past mailings I occasionally saw a queer kind of corporate callousness when mis-addressed envelopes were returned to us. Sometimes the returned mailing stamped with five or so possible reasons why the mailing was sent back -- sometimes you'll see "deceased."

Mancini-Duffy did a lot of business WTC people. Some of our clients, past and present: Aubrey G. Lanston; Morgan Stanley; Cantor Fitzgerald; Thacher, Proffitt & Wood; Marsh & McLennan (700 workers out of 1,700 not accounted for, the news says); EuroBrokers; Guy Carpenter; and the Port Authority itself. A client of ours who's given us a lot of work lately was Deutsche Bank, a firm with offices both in the WTC and One Liberty Plaza, which just had a partial collapse. I used to go across the street to carry proposals there all the time. Most these WTC client contacts are, at best, just names to me. The only exception I can think of is Julien J. Studley, a real estate firm, who had a few head honchos who I did some proposals with in the past. A fellow employee called me today (a real seasoned vet) and told me that one of the companies we work with JJS got their entire WTC office out, save for two people. Even two is still too grisly to think about it.

She also told me one secretary I'm quite fond of never even entered the building, but had to run for her life once the first tower collapsed, with all the debris and glass flying around. She's been walking with a crutch for the last few months.

We're getting closer to a climax, unfortunately:

Iraq recruited Saudi billionaire fugitive Osama Bin Laden and his Islamic allies to carry out the suicide attacks around the United States, according to Israeli intelligence.

Here's the rest of the article.

In Amherst there are flags on every lamppost. I was very glad to see them, as Amherst is irrationally liberal, so much so that I was beginning to think the town I now live in is grossly un- American ("But don't you think we deserved it? Because we're bad?", was one girl's response).

I was glad to hear you're alright, Mike.

Actually, I made a mistake. One Liberty Plaza didn't house Deutsche Bank; but I know it had a Brooks Brothers store inside. NASDAQ had offices there, too.

I'm somewhat concerned about St. Paul's Chapel and Trinity Church. Trinity was founded in 1697 (the current building was built in 1894); St. Paul's Chapel was completed in 1766. Both were filled with praying folk during Black Thursday. I've seen footage where St. Paul's was completely enveloped by debris from one of the fallen towers. The Woo lworth Building is also not far away, to say nothing of my beloved J&R Music World.

(I'm getting these facts from the 1999 NYC Michelin Guide, which is now queerly out-of-date. I bought it at the WTC Borders on August 16th. I kept the receipt.)

I was often fond of telling people that one of the people who plotted the 1993 bombing stood at one of the windows of J&R to watch one tower collapse upon the other. How naive I thought he was...

We're getting closer to a climax, unfortunately:

All too convenient. All too pat.

The World Tribune purports to be an independent source of media from the Internet. So far, there hasn't been any mention of this on CNN (the only station I'm watching right now), so its veracity of this report is still in question. And, of course, noting the source of this information (upon hindsight) looks to be very, very important in weighing this report.

That said, the names and pictures of 4 possible hijackers are being broadcast as I'm typing - they have broadcast this report twice in the past two hours. All 4 attended flying schools in Florida. 2 are/were residents of Saudi Arabia; 2 have passports from the United Arab Emirates.

I've admitted elsewhere that I'm capable of incredible fits of hysteria and depression, but I've felt so oddly neutral these last few days. I suppose I'm still in the protective cocoon of denial. In fact, I suspect that had I not worked at the World Trade Center, I'd be much more panicky.

I fear that I've been sounding weirdly cold lately, because everybody's words of concern for me have been as impossible to fathom as anything else that's happened. I'm sure I'll appreciate it eventually.

Mancini-Duffy's going to have an informal meeting at 277 Park tomorrow, but I suspect I'm not ready for it yet.

Chuck Scarborough on WNBC just talked about this odd electrical smell from downtown that, thanks to changing winds, uptown residents can now smell, too. Well, you can smell it in Rockville Centre too, and that's twenty-one miles away.

No worries. We're all there for you :-), and you can't place timelines on reacting to something like this.
