Putney Swope

Am I the only one here who thinks this movie is great? There has been little discussion on it. Am I a freeek for thinking it's brilliant? The board meeting at the beginning and the jive talking guys sitting on the toilet talking about having sex with "dudes" make me pee my pants laughing. If you know it what's your favourite part?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I think this movie is hilarious too Bryan. I need to watch it again, though, it's been about 5 or 6 years since the first time.

I like the airline commercial and the part about "Victrolacola."

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone needs to cover the "Face-Off" commercial jingle.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to have to rent it this weekend, or at least soon.

Have you ever seen Greasers Palace?

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but I'm compiling a list of fucked up movies to sit and watch soon, maybe this coming weekend. Seems to me I need a day of getting stoned and watching stuff like Dolomite.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds like a great idea!

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

We shoulda just been IMing this, eh?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't IM at work.

(perhaps this is our cue to involve others in the thread by recommending Putney Swope to them?)

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Did someone say Putney? (it's where I live)

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Watch the movie sometime, Mark. There's probably no connection at all, but if you're in the "frame of mind" you could make one up.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I always see this sitting in the cult section of the video store and contemplate checking it out but I haven't yet.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

please do! That way this thread won't die a lonely death.

hstencil, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this movie a lot but watched it to excess when I first discovered it; bought the DVD a couple of months ago, it's still good but didn't give me hard giggles quite so much.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You have a point John. There was a point about 10 years ago when I was watching it every week it seemed. I'd just start yelling out "EH SWOPE!" doing my best President Mimeo impression spontaneously walking down the street. It is a movie that you have to watch more than once though, as it simply has too many little crazy bits in it to be absorbed by only watching it once.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

this is my favorite movie ever.

HEEN! THE WORD SHALL BE HEEN!

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Stratosphere baby, stratosphere.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks a fuckload. You all talked up this movie to the point where I had to buy it on DVD immediately, but since Amazon fucking eats it (and my cookies weren't properly set or some shit) I accidentally wound up buying three fucking copies.

It had better be good.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Nate if you've never seen it I can practically guarantee that the commercials in it will make you piss your pants laughing.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they funnier than Redman in a toilet on a jet-ski?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, I'll trade you a copy for a copy of Hard Core Logo on DVD!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I may actually need that $20-$40 back but if not I'll certainly consider

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate c'mon dude NOTHING is funnier than that Redman-in-the-toilet sketch

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing wrong with having three copies. you can just give two of them away to friends or loved ones. it's that good.

i just ordered a bootleg copy of downey's pound - apparently it's about a dog pound, except the human actors are pretending to be dogs. i'm pretty excited for it.

j fail (cenotaph), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, if you have extras, send one to me, I'll reimburse you.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
It's on Trio right now!

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 21 June 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

When I saw this I thought "gee, the girl singing the Face-Off commercial sounds like the girl who sang 'Frank Mills'." Then I saw the credits, and I was right!

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 22 June 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you like it? The movie, I mean?

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 22 June 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan asked me to revive this. I'm not entirely sure why, since I still haven't seen the movie. Oh, Rosemary never did answer his question, I guess.

I did just see Office Space, finally, but this probably isn't the right thread to mention that.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a bit disappointed, but maybe I need to be more in a '60s mindframe to appreciate it, instead of "oh boy! This is gonna be a proto-Pootie Tang! Awesome!" I think if I watch it again later knowing what to expect it'll stand on its own merits. And I'm glad that I've seen it anyways, because the credits to Boogie Nights are a lot funnier to me now.

Visually, at least, it is swank. Great usage of black and white considering the go-go-psych rainbow brainmatter explosion most other counterculture directors of the era were toying with. And Antonio Fargas, yes.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, two questions:

1. Why didn't you come to our Minneapolis show?

2. Why didn't you bring that extra copy of Putney Swope to the Minneapolis show for me?

hstencil, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

eight years pass...

Out next week as part of a RD Sr box from Eclipse.

I first saw it in '79 on a double bill w/ Animal House!

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

five years pass...

no Robert Downey Sr. thread (?), watched Chafed Elbows and i lost it laughing at this moment: main character is walking down the streets of new york when he sees a guy painting a white line in the middle of the road. he walks up to him and asks "what's going on?" the guy turns to him, shrugs, and says, "You've gotta draw the line somewhere."
