It's next to impossible to get onto the Red Cross's website right now, but those wishing to contribute can go to Amazon.com and they are taking contributions via their page on behalf of Red Cross.

If anyone else hears of similar ways people can help, financially and otherwise, could they please post them here and not buried within the terrorism threads?

Good idea, Ally.

Like I said in one of the other threads, PayPal allows users w/ a PayPal account to donate.

If you have Yahoo PayDirect, you can also donate money to the Red Cross here.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Might I add that a PayPal donation takes all of 30 seconds.

Astoundingly simple, yes. If you're registered like me, do it. I don't care if you're adding to your damn credit card debt or not.

I'm sure $5 won't kill anyone.

And as most probably know, the Red Cross has a glut of blood donations, but they are still seeking money donations. So please help.

Anyone know anywhere you can donate by Switch (and does paypal allow it)? My credit card is, um, out of use currently.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Even if it does, you have to wait for your statement to come through for a code to activate your Paypal account so if you want to donate now I wouldn't recommend it.

i donated blood today at work. no credit card here (I know, what a luddite) but I donated $40 worth of packaged food and drink to the red cross drop today. i feel...impotent still. but slightly less so.

I personally had problems with Amazon today. They wouldn't, for some reason, accept my postal code (weird, considering I've purchased books from them before). Anyway, the United Way also has a special relief fund set up. I had no problems at all with it (though yes, to do it instantly, you'll need a credit card). I'm not sure where United Way money's going, but the fact that it's been set up specifically for this crisis makes me hope that at least some of that money will get into the right hands.

David and I gave money to Doctors Without Borders and the REd Cross today .

My employer has set up its own relief fund and blood drive. If you have a large employer, you may be able to set up something similar. It makes it easier for people so that more will contribute. I heard a doctor last night saying that people should wait a few more days before giving blood - that they already have plenty but that they will need it next week and the next, etc.

Kerry, Thursday, 13 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to point out that the perhaps the best way to contribute at this point would be financially or with food donations, clothing donations, etc - let's face it, they are finding the need for blood to not be as great as they thought since there aren't that many survivors :\

Ally, Thursday, 13 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Still, stocks were low enough already, so donations couldn't hurt unless where you're donating to says otherwise. In the meantime, though, by all means kick in the cash like Ally says.

I'm trying to sort out an online auction to raise funds, but to have the backing of the website I need the definite details of a charity to donate to. Any ideas?

You can support the recovery of injured rescue workers and the families of those fallen in the line of duty.

I am serious about Doctors Without Borders . Triage saves lives

anthony, Friday, 14 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres is a particularly good choice, because they are also (and very bravely) still operating in the areas of Afghanistan not under Taleban control, trying to deal with the effects of civil war and natural disaster there. So if they are operating in NYC too, even the chickens-roost theorists can donate to them without compunction.

But I went to the DWB homepage yesterday to check this and I couldn't find confirmation that they *were* currently operating in NYC, so the Red Cross is still currently your best bet for donations which will immediately alleviate the current crisis. But Medecins Sans Frontieres is a good charity to support long-term anyway.
