Do you ever drink alcohol in the morning?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

preompted by the fact that it was a colleague's 30th birthday today and he brought in cakes and a bottle of brennívin (Icelandic schnapps), which is made with potatoes and carraway seeds. Having a shot of this at 10.42 out of a plastic cup, I suddenly recalled that this was prolly the earliest in the day I had ever consumed alcohol.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

On holiday when I want a lazy day where no one is going to ask me to drive anywhere I like to roll out of bed and make a bloody mary.

Once or twice during my first year at university I had swift shots between lectures to put off an onrushing hangover.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, hair of the dog! Did it work?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

suprisingly effective but oy veh afternoon hangovers are bad.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I've started at 9am before although the specifics of the incident escape me now. Beware kids; I used to be a booze fool and now I have a laughable collapsing stomach.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

A few times in college we started drinking around 9am. Bad idea.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

only if it is still carrying on from previous night.

otherwise, i couldnt even consider it

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

a laughable collapsing stomach

This sounds so much like a circus act:

"Roll up, roll up! See Mr. Nicholas Southall and his amazing collapsing stomach!"

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can keep from vomiting, hair of the dog works 100 percent.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

had a period, after finishing university, when i enjoyed quite a bit of drinking in the am - a day when the first things to pass your lips are toothpaste and beer is usually a good day. (unless you're an alcoholic, i guess.)

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Before standard pub opening times? (i.e. 11am) - No, not that I can recall.

11-12 am? Yes, occasionally.

Oh actually, I think I might have opened the bidding with a pint of lager on our recent France-to-UK ferry trip at about half ten. It didn't go down very well.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

carrying on from previous night I do this almost weekly, though it is starting to take it out of me too much, feeling like shit all day all week isnt worth it.

i think i've started early on the way to festivals and things aswell, as you do.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah and I went to the pub to watch England vs Brazil in the World Cup last year. I have a feeling we may have had a half pint of lager each, which would have been about 8am.

Other than that, I once had 5 beers after getting up at a party where I'd stayed over cos I needed to do something about the hangover. I felt fucking fantastic! Until I collapsed crossing the road and had to be dragged out of the way of passing cars.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 22 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I was counting carrying on th from the night before. Nothing makes a come-down like tea, beer and whisky.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 May 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Over Easter Matt and I were house-sitting for my parents with nothing to do but eat chocolate, drink beer, play Scrabble and sit outside watching the sea. And because we had to get up early to feed the dog and cats, the second of those activities did sometimes get going well before noon. Generally not something I like doing though.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 22 May 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the fact that in Spain you can order booze with your coffee on the way to work in the morning. At the little subway cafes in Barcelona you can get a shot of whisky to get you set up for work.

(Having said that, the one time I took advantage of that at 7:30am we'd been drinking til 5am in a club and I'd only had about half an hour's kip, so technically that might count as carrying on from the night before. And I certainly wasn't working that day.)

I've had plenty of breakfast beers. Either a Smithfield fry-up with a pint of Guinness or, more often, a tinny from the fridge if you've had a party the night before. Then there's Glastonbury - don't think I've ever not had breakfast booze on waking up there.

I think the key is to not carry on at evening drinking speed. Stop after a couple or take it nice and slow, otherwise you're going to get in a fucking awful state very quickly.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

On the 1 or 2 occasions that I've drank before noon, it was an incredible waste of a day and alcohol. If I remember correctly, you either get sleepy and fall asleep in the early afternoon and wake up feeling shitty in the evening OR you keep on a-drinkin' casually throughout the day (like at a beach party or something) and by the end of the day you're either really drunk but don't really feel like it or else you just can't seem to get drunk.

scaredy Cat, Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say no but then MarkC reminded me of the last World Cup. A couple of times, during those weeks, I found myself in the pub at about 9AM.

I don't even like football.

robster (robster), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Clashic.

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I started at 7 a.m for the England/Nigeria game last year. It felt strange, and precipitated an almighty bender of which i can recall very little.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

N.B. This is not A Good Thing

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the best things about being DEATHLY with a cold is that you can drink hot whisky at 10.30. Mmmm. Whisky and blankets and Trisha.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been to fullblown cocktail parties that started at 6:00 AM.

If you don't have any serious obligations that day, morning drinks are wonderful.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Do countries other than the U.S. have the concept of "brunch"? I like a nice glass of champagne alongside the coffee and generous breakfast. And JB is OTM about not drinking at night-out rates in the morning.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

H has revealed his secret identity: he is "The Wolf" from Pulp Fiction!

"I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that it didn't hurt,
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert..."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 22 May 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say once or twice I've (after a late-night of drinking + little to absolutely no sleep) drank a couple beers as early as 7 AM. Once, in the back seat of a car on a road trip, I started drinking at 7 AM and continued until about noon. That was one of the only morning road trips I've ever taken where I've not fallen asleep (except of course for the times I was driving...and no I wasn't drinking beer those times).

Rather often I'll have a mimosa with brunch on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 May 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink every morning there's booze left from the night before (i.e. not often).

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Tracer, sadly, not quite that glamorous or retro-cool but my sister college had May Day functions that involved much drink consumption involved so you had cocktails beginning at 4:30 or so, before 6:00 Am champagne inaugaration. (i started late)

H (Heruy), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean you people stop drinking?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't have any serious obligations that day, morning drinks are wonderful.

Like your AA meeting...

Also, I remember staying up to do a paper in college and celebrating with several beers at 6AM (end of the sememster).

That same morning a friend walked into the dining common wrapped in a blanket, produced a beer from underneath, poured it into his cereal and ate it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 May 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

True story, that. I was there.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I rarely crack open a beer before noon, but I'm down for bloody marys and mimosas (and moving to NO means I can go to Molly's at the Market - life is good).

luna (luna.c), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, moving to NO means DRIVE-THRU 24-HOUR DAIQUIRI PLACES THAT SELL THEIR DAIQUIRIS IN GALLON-SIZED PLASTIC JUGS. And you can keep them in the freezer if some wuss friend orders a gallon of White Russian and can't make it past Leningrad.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It just keeps getting better! Tep, I kiss you.

Um, again. Hell - I kiss all of you.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

for brunch, Astral Plane in Philly used to have a
6 dollar, make it yourself, all you can drink bloody mary bar

god bless 'em

H (Heruy), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)
