I saw this on sale in Sainsbury's today. It sounds like the worst idea in crisp history. Has anyone else seen this and have you tried it?

Yes

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 22 May 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Do the ingredients say "artificial vanilla flavoring"? Fake vanilla flavor is nasty.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 22 May 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't checked the ingredients, but I'm quite certain its artifical.

It's such a daft choice for a Monster Munch flavour. It's much too bland for crisps - crisps are supposed to have strong, salty flavours.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

quite certain

I mean, "reasonably sure". Not "quite certain". I mean, you haven't checked the back of the packet properly, Chriddof, you great daftie.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

If there's real vanilla in it I'll eat my hat. Or a packet of these gacky snacks.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought they were white chocolate flavour due to the packaging being the same as that of a Milky Bar. But the indispensable http://www.snackspot.org proves me wrong.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 23 May 2003 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is gopping. They brought back Roast Beef flavour MM though which made me very happy before I gave up crisps.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 23 May 2003 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

dee-licious.
it's the start of the whole new sweet
crisps thing, and that's why they had to kick
off with a relatively bland-ish flava, to get
people used to the idea. they couldn't
have jumped straight out with strawberry cheesecake
or whatever, this is britain - there'd have been riots.

piscesboy, Friday, 23 May 2003 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Roll on the curry flavoured ice cream...

Pete (Pete), Friday, 23 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw these the other day, i am very keen to try them, but i bet they're yucky!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 May 2003 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought some as a present for the Arsemonkey as a part of a cunning sugar experiment. They taste just like second rate sugar puffs. Unsurprisingly.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 23 May 2003 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

its the the snack only a post-modernist coke-head could have come up with.

Ed (dali), Friday, 23 May 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Well if you eat them with a can of coke you have no need for the vanilla varient.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 23 May 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Can anybody solve an ongoing debate with me and a workmate. The three original flavours of Monster Munch were Roast Beef, Pickled Onion and ???

I think it was always Flamin' Hot, my friend thinks they were some sort of Bacon flavour!! On an aside, i had a nightmare about the Roast Beef flavour monster when i was about 8 or 9. I was sitting in my parents car in the countryside when he jumped out of the bushes and started trying to smash his way into my car. Scary stuff.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I think it was Papaya Lime

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Is this your workmate?

stet (stet), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Flamin' Hot wasn't an original flavour, btw.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

The originals were: Hot and Spicy, Pickled Onion and Beefy. Here endeth the lesson.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for putting my mind at rest. So, we were both wrong.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Are you sure there was Hot n Spicy in the "early days"?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:04 (twenty years ago)

i think it was spicy tomato flavour, beef, pickled onion

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

hot n spicy are a more recent flavour. was the other original some kind of cheesey flavour?

Advert :

This Monster is having his favourite dream —
The one where Monster Munch grows on trees —
Giant trees of course!
There's one tree for Pickled Onion flavour,
One tree for Saucy flavour,
And one tree for Roast Beef flavour —
Which is all very nice and fun for him —
But not so for his somewhat smaller friends!
However, while he's enjoying his dream —
Guess who's enjoying his Monster Munch?
Monster Munch from Smith's in three flavours
The biggest snack pennies can buy!

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

The mystery third pack was a mystery sweet, meaty flavour in a pink bag I think! But none of the names people are suggesting ring a bell, and I am near-certain it wasn't chilli-hot in any sense. My memory is some kind of ersatz rib-type taste, not as nice as the others.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Saucy!

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Ste is correct. I never realised how rubbish that was tho. Saucy flavour? What the hell is that meant to be? am i rite?

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:49 (twenty years ago)

If it was Saucy flavour then it is rubbish. I was expecting to be hit with some forgotten nostalgia, but i dont ever remember eating Saucy crisps. Would it be like a Tangy Toms-esque tomato sauce flavour?

dmun drive-in (dmun), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:55 (twenty years ago)

i just don't think anybody actually bought the saucy flavour ones.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 12:27 (twenty years ago)

There was some form of chutney flavour, wasn't there?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:01 (twenty years ago)

no the chutney flava was for space invaders.
KP made them i believe.

definitely saucy tho on the MM flavas circa '77 front.
