Ok so we're (finally) buying some films on DVD for the language library where I work and I can put forward 5 suggestions. But predictably my mind has gone blank... SO give me 5 films available on DVD that you think would be suitable for English learners (adults)?

Or any 5 good films in English which perhaps won't get shown on TV for a while/very often.

sesame street

james (james), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Trainspotting, Twin Town, Mean Streets, Bad Taste, Miller's Crossing.

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

There's no Twin Town DVD apparently, so let's say East Is East instead.

East is East is a good call, for teaching overseas students about 'multicultural Britain' innit.

When I was teaching English in Spain the pupils (adults) had trouble grasping the accent of a girl I met out there who was from Edinburgh and didn't have a strong accent at all. Therefore while it's obviously very noble to try to introduce them to the world of regional accents, I think Trainspotting might be trying to get them running before they can walk.

Oh I'm sorry I read "unsuitable for English learners". Educating Rita, then?

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

We have Trainspotting on video already - attempts have been made to watch it but there is widespread bafflement...

Archel (Archel), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, in the end I've put forward:

East is East
Moulin Rouge/Romeo & Juliet
Casablanca
Bend It Like Beckham
Brighton Rock
The Sword and the Stone (huge demand for animated features)
any James Bond film (again huge demand)
Last Resort

plus Talk to Her for Spanish and Ring/Ring 2 for Japanese

Archel (Archel), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulp Fiction, Motherfucker.

Blade

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Full Metal Jacket: Clear use of english in the beginning, maggot, decending into grunt slang, and dead zipperheads.

jm (jtm), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

None of them have any educational value whatsoever, so just get stuff the teachers want to watch (hundreds of times).

PS: I have worked in the library a few times lately. It's a fucking doddle, I don't why they don't just let me stay there.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

All people learning to speak English should be forced to study Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Well five Don Knotts films are coming to DVD in September, so I'd suggest to wait for those.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's A Wonderful Life.
Some Hitchcock (Rear Window, Vertigo?)

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 24 May 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)
